    THE MAN OF QAZWIN
    ENDURE THE PAIN ....
There are people who live in the
region of Qazwin, and they have a custom of tattooing their bodies with blue designs, such tattoos
being intended as talisman against evil. A certain
man from Qazwin went to the barber, where tattoos
were inscribed with a sharp needle, and asked the
barber to give him a tattoo of a lion, and to under-
take to do the work with great artistry. "My sign is
Leo, so this is an appropriate design. Undertake the work well on my shoulder blade."
    The barber agreed.
The moment the barber began to use the
sharp needle for the tattoo, the man felt the pain sincerely, and deeply in his shoulder, and began to groan with discomfort.
"O illustrious one, this needle is killing me-
what are you doing back there?" The barber replied that
he inscribed a lion as instructed, what should he do?
"What part of the lion do you work on now?"
    asked the man in suffering.
"Why the tail is where I've begun," said the bar-
ber, and the man exclaimed that he should leave out
the tail, for his breath was stopped by the lion's tail,
and by the expectation of the rump that he knew
would choke his breath and kill him.
"Let the lion go without a tail, O lion-maker, for
my heart is faint from the pinpricks of your craft."
So the barber began pricking on another
part of the man's shoulder, forcefully and without
mercy. The man yelled at the top of his voice,
What are you lattooing now?" And the barber replied that he tattooed the ear of the lion.
"O Barber, let the lion bave no ears, for the sake
of God, leave out the ears." And so the barber moved yet again to another part of the man's shoulder and
once again the man from Qazwin began to wail in
pain, "O lord barber, this is the third place you start
what do you tattoo now?" And the barber explained
that this was the belly of the lion, no less.
"Leave out the belly for God's sake, leave out the
belly-what need of a belly with so much dye already injected.
By now the barber had become distraught
with bewilderment and stood there for a long time with his knuckle crunched between his teeth in frustration.
He cast the needle to the ground and cried
that this was insane that no one had ever created a lion without a tail or a head or a belly-no such lion ever existed under the hand of God.
O brother endure the pain of the pin,
For the end will bring more than joy.
For the sun and the moon and the sky itself,
    Will honor your selfish denial,
    Will distinguish
    your presence in One.

Among his spiritual advisers was Shamsi-'d-Din of Tabriz, who gained such an influence over the poet that Rumi adopted his name as his takhallus, or poetical Nom de plume, under which he wrote his Divan or lyrical odes. Rumi died at Konia, December 17, 1273, and was buried in his father's mausoleum at Konia. The name Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi stands for love and ecstatic flight into the infinite.
