I heard first her sing this in 1977....I was in college, and it....struck me as really cool - I mean, it was Bette, right? I'm now gonna be 65 , married almost 40 years....and I heard it just now fir the first time in about 30 years.....what a *different* and more poignant experience it is today......
Thank you. This song has always brought tears to my eyes, but this intro has just helped me realize that many of my neighbours don't respond to my hellos because they're carrying an egg.
I watch this often...to remind myself that we all deserve kindness and considerstion...acknowledgment...and blessings to John Prine...for the truth of life...
I used to listen to this song on a tape in the car with my nan, it was the last car she had before she lost her marbles and we lost her. I didn't know what it was about....just it was on a tape that stated "experience the divine". I know what it's about now....I miss you nan. ❤
I Have Been A HUGE FAN OF The Divine Miss M: Bette Midler Since Bette Was Singing In Continental Bathhouses In NYC! I Even Have A Video Clip That’s In Black And White. It Shows The Divine Miss M In A Terry Cloth Robe And A Towel Wrapped In Her Head with A Microphone In Her Hand.. I Love The Live At Last Album (Which Is Where This Video Clip Came From)! I Love It When Someone Says Something That Bette Doesn’t Quite Agree With Or Someone Breaks Her Train Of Thought & Bette Says Something Like “F*ck Off!”; “Shut Up! I’m Workin’!” Just Love How She Can Make You Laugh One Minute And Cry The Next..❤❤
Wonderful....Finally found the 'fried egg' intro to the song. Thank you, Don. The phrase became a standard phrase for decades for me and my guy whenever we would run into friend egg ladies and men (and recognized it in ourselves).
We lost John Prine just last week, but at only 25, was able to the give the world this song, probably the most poignant song about old age, loneliness and love. If you look closely at the great Divine Ms. M's face, and listen to her voice, she is doing everything in her power not to break from the emotion of this beautiful song. The quality of the video image is poor, but if you look closely, you can see she, try as she might, she couldn't hold back that one tear.
Thank you so very much! “I was walking down 42nd NOT working 42nd St.!!!” There was a time folks when that joke was universally funny… almost 50 years ago… I miss t has that 42nd Street!
Sorry Miss Midler I am sharing this without your go ahead but I was walking down Mishawaka Ave yesterday and I saw a huge woman waiting for the bus and it was really hot and I thought about this bit and the current situation. I said hello because of you but I didn't know what to do after that.
+karma yangzom She just completed a successful tour called Divine Intervention and released a new CD last year entitled, It's The Girls. She's working on two new movies.

One of my favorite songs by Bette and always brings tears. ❤
I cried when I first saw this .
Rest In Peace, John Prine.

This is Bette at her BEST ! Pure, raw, emotional, as she tells us a story ! THERE IS ONLY ONE BETTE! Thanks for posting this classic !
I remember this performance so well - RUclips has all my memories hidden in there! Bette, you're the BEST!
....me too!
Was in college
@@rugby8-Philadelphia what year did it come out originally, emotional song

It's a John Prine song - not sure when he wrote/recorded it
@@rugby8-Philadelphia thank you, I will look it up under his name,

RIP JOHN
She is truly one of a kind, and like the late, great John Prine, we shall not see her (and his) kind again.
She was so sad during this song, I saw tears in the corner of her eyes, she can really pull at your heart when she sings these sad songs, 😥
I’ll always truly love Bette Midler…for her heartfelt depth AND her own special ways.
never surpassed!! outstanding!
I was there...Fabulash!
Love Bette! This is her at her best!
Midler such an artist & what a voice!
Prine is a lyrical genius.
Now I have to hear "Up the ladder to the Roof"!
I love her stories . So much truth and humanity . Hello out there , you're not alone .
Hello Kyle

well, he ain’t dead yet.
My God! He's not dead!!
Tom Walker sadly, he is now

Bette Midler asked to sit next to me and then she did and said something to me that really threw me for a loop !
Sometimes just that is enough.
Yes, hello in there to hollow ancient eyes can make a huge difference!
Great song....i have the whole show, but it's a big shame that they deleted the songs "Birds", "Shiver me timbres" and the "Nanette" segment.
This was from DIVINE MADNESS ?
This is on her "Live at Last" LP. Brilliant. Whatever happened to The Divine Miss M? 😔❤️
+karma yangzom She just completed a successful tour called Divine Intervention and released a new CD last year entitled, It's The Girls. She's working on two new movies.
Bette Midler murdered her in 1975, with help from joe Layton, Marc schaman, Toni basil, costume designers.
@mzmiller52 Well-I Never!!
Sobrancelha raspada?? É isso mesmo?? 😍

She was describing her, not making a judgment.
Why does everything have to be judged w how politically correct it is when there is nothing correct about politics? Just asking...

Lol
Not Like her ...
This is not Bette Midlers real voice . I should know she was with me ...
This is terrible. Very artificial. John Prine is the real thing.
This is not Bette's real voice . I know what she really sounds like ....
You're creepy, stop leaving these messages. You're tweeking bad
@@indigosoul240 yeah, just say "hello, in there"!
Ugh. This was fucking terrible. I wish Bette Midler(the Entertainer) never happened. I wish she had just worked at a Deli or something.
U Probably SHOULD NEVER Ever Comment Ever NEVER!!
@@davidstevenson9496 No, she was always terrible. She would've been MUCH better at slicing pastrami & serving pickles.
