In honour of the Mughal-e-Azam production being produced in India by Feroz Abbas Khan, here is Akademi’s small offering with permission from the commissioner.
A bespoke commission produced in June 2016 by Akademi

Can we stop comparing? Comparison is the third of joy. She’s done an amazing job. I’m sure more than half of you lot could not deliver as good as this artist.
There's no question of comparison here because Madhubala did not actually perform the difficult kathak steps. It was done by a male dancer. Only the closeups were of Madhubala.

Whenever this song is performed by whoever performs it, they own it.. so there is no question of comparison..

Can we stop comparing her to Madhubala. Had Madhubala not performing is well then it wouldn't have been a masterpiece that it is now. Having said that she interpreted it in her way. And she is good. God people can't appreciate anything these days. I don't know why it's always a run for what's the best. She's not claiming to be better here
I totally agree with you. It is frustrating when in art people become overly obsessed with a celebrity that they cannot allow room for the energies of other artists to just breathe. After all, do we not want to see the proliferation of art throughout the society, reaching and touching as many people as possible? We need to give even less famous artists their due respect. Furthermore, I think celebrities are great and all, but we ought to leave it at that and not overdo the praise. Continuously saying celeb xyz is the best the best and indepedent artist abc cannot compare shows lack of critical thinking in appraising an art form, I feel. We ought to assess all practitioners on an individual basis.

This live performance is priceless. The dancer did it with grace and poise. The performance in Mughl e Azam was choreographed in cuts and pieces, whereas this performance was done in one go.

She has danced absolutely beautifully! This dance may look easy, but each and every movement is very precise and it is very difficult to master. Plus she is performing on stage, all in one go, not like a movie set, where there are retakes to cover up any flaws in the performance. She has performed spectacularly well & both the dance and the performance are as good as the original. I don't know why some people are being so negative towards her. She is her own person, not Madhubala & she has performed Madhubala's dance absolutely flawlessly and beautifully.
Everybody is talking of Madubala,truly she brought Anarkali to life with her immortal beauty n acting.....But she didn't receive any Award. ....how very disgusting....but the audience were spell bound with her performance, that is her everlasting Award.
Madhubala did not know how to dance. Her kathak steps in the song were performed by a male dancer wearing a mask of her face.
Very good job, a timeless classic song that never gets old or boring no matter how many times you hear it, how many different interpretations of dance you see. Excellent, flawless abhinaya that is just the perfect subtelty for this form of dance. I can tell the dancer is very good, but comparing to Madhubala's original dance, Madhubala was faster and more fluid. Not sure if this dancer deliberately wanted to tone down the kalam, also I feel like I noticed less fluidity in her actual lower body movements such as turns and transitions. But otherwise, thank you for treating us with this classic exquisite piece.
It was not Madhubala, a male dancer called Lakshmi Narayan wore Madhubala's mask and danced. Madhubala was unwell and didn't have Kathak training, so they took only close ups of her.

A pretty good performance by the artist. You can't compare it with the movie where a dance sequence is picturized in many takes and retakes.

I think, we should never compare, Golden era Artists, with now active performers.
The sensitivity of golden era, viewers, was remarkable. Moreover, the movies were made by Doctors, who were so much Talented, that they could visualise ,the script and rehersed themselves vigorously so that they can make the artist ,what they want and in case of any hitch, the Director used to act the scene so that the Artist feeling relaxed n complete the Scene at ease.
Now a days, we have completely immersed in Western Culture n I don't want to interfere in their Culture..
Yes, we should always keep in mind, our Heritage, Culture n try to adopt our Culture.

Nice to present in in theatres. Nice dance. But Madhubala nailed it.But she danced very well.
Idk if you know this or not but originally on the time of shooting this song Madhubala was severely affected from her heart condition and that is why they hire an amazing dancer lachu maharaj who was male dancer and they used prosthetic and all so that his face looks similar to madhubala. That's how makers interpret that situation. Madhubala did shot the close ups and dance which didn't need much fast movement otherwise the fast dance movements you see in the original song was done by other person who was also amazing indeed. And talking about this song she's amazing as well ❤️❤️

I took NAUSHAD saheb from Bangalore to Mysore[80 miles] in a car . I wanted him to visit the MUSOLIUM of the Great TIPPU SULTAN. During the Journey, Naushad sab told me several stories
of how he composed the musical score of MOGHUL E AZAM. He said that K ASIF was also a generous person , paid him the highest money known to a music director at that time.
He very much wanted BADE GHULAM ALI KHAN to sing. SHAKEEL BADAYUNI [lyricist] wrote hundreds of songs before it was finalised [PYAR KIYA TO DARNA KEYA].

This was a beautiful performance……..no question. My only issue was with the idiots in the audience who were laughing and talking nonstop . They could be heard very clearly and honestly this was extremely disrespectful to the artistes and the whole production !

Everyone comparing her to madubala just FYI madubala did not do most of the dances in the movie... she was not a dancer, it was actually a male dancer dressed in drag. If you notice in the movie at any of the hard dance moves the shot is usually from far away or her back is turned.
Renjith Nair yeah her heart condition didn't let her dance and they used a rubber mask on the male dancer on the part where she spun around the whole courtroom
What about expression that one also done by male dancer. Madhubala expression is enough for dance.
That is really interesting to know because based on difficulty, complexity, and technicality of the original dance in the film, I was really asking myself the question was Madhubala actually a trained Kathak dancer or what? No way ordinary actress could have trained in only 6 months to perform very fast chakkars at once.
