@@Ad-qk6km He still continued to see her after she confessed she was seventeen. He should've ended it for good right then and there but he still continued to date her after.
I wouldn't count this. She did lie, and once he found out, he basically kept her on ice. They didn't see each other again until the night before her birthday. And at that dinner, he said he was leaving for Dr's Without borders. And even when she offered to come along, he said no.
I hated the way Audra treated girls who dealt with Drew, but her going off on him about messing with Zoey was one of her best moments. Like why did he even entertain her 🤦🏾♀️
I completely agree with you. I hated her as a parent at first, but honestly when you watch the show back she's probably one of the best developed parents in the show for me because of how she learns to accept Adam and acknowledges her own bigotry to have a better relationship with her son. How she helps Bianca even after everything. I find her very interesting as a parent on the show. Maybe that's just me though
Feels like she has some type of emotional incest towards Drew considering the way she handles his relationships including Bianca. It's like she could be the only "woman" in his life. It goes beyond "mama bear" vibes.
@@aireyb5785 no it doesn’t… what scenes depict that? You just want to be weird. Drew is technically her only son (Adam is trans), mothers tend to have more close relationships with their sons than daughters hence the terms ‘mama’s boy’ and ‘daddy’s girl’. Adam was his dad’s version of that when he was female. Is there something personal you wanna talk about? I suggest therapy
@Mslee8320 I'm not suggesting anything more, hence why I said "emotional" nor did I state it was a fact that she was guilty of it. Just a matter of opinion. Believe it or not, many interpersonal relationships, as you stated between mother and daughter, mother and son go beyond territorial. And no, not to be weird, just something I've noticed throughout the years of being an avid fan of this show. Everytime Drew got into a relationship or casual fling, she would always cause some type of rift or go as far as to insult the girl he was dating. The only time she was in the right was regarding Zoe. When Drew asserted his independence, she stalked him at Fiona's condo, constantly smothering him (prior to the gang incident). She goes as far as to try to break up his wedding between him and Bianca (even though he had cold feet). As for therapy, I'm covered. Thanks. Edit: I think you have misinterpreted what I said as in Audra "wanting" her son. If this is the vibe I gave it wasn't my intention. Mothers naturally want to be close to their sons. Oftentimes when that son enters a relationship they think they're being "replaced" or that they won't need them anymore. Wasn't trying to imply anything further, my bad if it came out like it did.
This is no original Degrassi on the CBC from Canada. In Canada depending on the province the legal drinking age is 18 or 19, legal age of consent is between 16-18 and in the past with the Original Series could be as low as 14.
This is no original Degrassi on the CBC from Canada. In Canada depending on the province the legal drinking age is 18 or 19, legal age of consent is between 16-18 and in the past with the Original Series could be as low as 14. And currently in the US, where the odd state started to allow minors to marry legal adults without emancipation. Since “New Class” and given the “Hollywood” makeover, the show has lost its sincerity and a huge revolving door of cast since. Though a few original cast members are in the newer version, they’ve watered down their principles they had even back in junior high in the ‘90’s
@@jillb3072If I could piggy back off this and bring up Drew's age? In the show, Drew and Zoe were involved when Drew was repeating his senior year due to him dropping out and failing to complete grade 12 the year prior. That would, more likely than not, put him at 19. Of course it'd still be possible for him to be 18, but only in the scenario that he had been born within the last quarter of the calendar year due to how to the school years and systems work in Canada. And due to those same reasons, Zoe is either 13 or 14 (again, it's more likely she'd be 14 because of the calander year versus Canadain school year thing). All of this to say... in the best case scenario, if we're talking strictly about the age gap; Zoe would be 14 and Drew would be 18. That's technically legal in Canada under the Romeo and Juilet law there. Even if I wanted to take it's legality into account, I would still struggle to think of a situation where it's appropriate and/or healthy for a 14 year old girl and an 18 year old boy to be in a romantic or intimate (physically or not) relationship. In the worst case scenario, she'd be 13 and he'd be 19. I'm not even gonna elaborate on that one.
This take has never seemed sound to me. Its all leads to a question of whether or not the viewer truly understands the media they're consuming. We have to remember what Degrassi aimed to accomplish with its depiction of teenage life. Degrassi, the proto-teen drama, since '79 (but really '86) all the way up to about season 10, never wanted to follow your typical serialized drama narrative storytelling structure. IThe viewer was mean to, for example, watch Kathleen be a total mean girl every time she's on screen, lines or no lines she was always mean muggin; only to reveal her struggles at home, her eating disorder, her abusive partner. none of those storylines got proper "endings" but we watched as Kathleen carried each experience with her. Degrassi was supposed to depict a realistic school as we followed an ensemble group of relatable teens going through issues teens experienced in real life at the time. Think back to your high school years. did you go through something heavy? Now did your experience have a neatly constructed exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and neat resolution? Chances are probably not. there are some things I went though in high school that I dealt with in whatever way my teenage mind felt was best and many times i never found peace with certain situations but we move on because that's life. it stays with you of course and it influences your actions sometimes negatively sometimes positively in the future, which i think degrassi had a better trackrecord of showcasing. life just goes on.its not inherently lazy writing (although degrassi is guilty of that at times) lol also there are no villains in Degrassi; it's a school with students and teachers. there are no redemption arcs for characters you perceive as a villain because, at the end of the day, we all mess up , some more than others (Peter....), and Degrassi had no interest in creating that romanticized storytelling style... *sigh* until the telenovela era . I didn't watch every episode because 40-episode seasons are not my gig, but if I remember correctly, those seasons tried to carry the conflicts in a more traditional narrative structure.
Fun fact Melinda (Alli) actually went to prom with it the guy who played Johnny and she was 16 playing Alli while also having her own apartment while filming Degrassi
@@LovelyJai23 yes she revealed that on her podcast and in a old post on instagram there’s a post of her in a newspaper about her playing a 14 year old Alli at 16
I don't think Fiona was a minor when she dated Charlie. She was supposed to graduate with Holly J but got held back a year, which would make her around 18 when she dated Charlie.
@@sweetgeo96same, I wanna believe she’s like 21 at most but she could be 25+ for all we know😂 of all the times I’ve watched this series I can’t remember them ever mentioning her actual age
I was watching an episode yesterday and when she told Charlie about her alcoholism Charlie explicitly said but you're 17, so she actually was a minor when they were together. I don't quite sure how old was Charlie though
@@j-rulestheworld9606 I read the age of consent in Toronto is 16, and I don't know maybe Charlie was only 20, but nevertheless, it was creepy for Charlie to be with a romantically inexperienced high schooler who knows nothing about what it's like to be an adult when she was obviously more experienced with relationships and adulting.
I think Paige ending up in another toxic situation after the fallout with Dean and the way Spinner treated her during the trial makes sense. I like that the show at least ended up presenting Mr.O as a loser when he gives her the weed and breaks up with her. I think Paige really starts to heal when she’s with Alex. I think they could’ve wrote it better but I think Paige and her dysfunctional / inappropriate relationships depict how complicated things can be after going through sexual assault.
Wasn't he a student teacher? Very unlikely he was in his late 20s, maybe 22 at the oldest. They had to cast someone who looked visibly older than the rest of the cast to get the age gap across and most of the cast were like 17-19 at that point, so.
@@maraphernalia I looked it up. The actor was 25 at the oldest but was more than likely 24. With him being a student teacher, you're right in that the character was most likely 22.
Matt/Mr. Oleander only confessed to his relationship with Paige AFTER Mr. Simpson said he saw them together. He would have let Paige take the fall for it if Archie didn't step up.
8:31 No, he offers him ABSINTHE. And, you can tell tristan doesn’t realize how strong it really is, because he only knows it from a play instead of knowing it for being how strong it is. Absolutely wild behavior for anybody, no matter if you are trying to sleep with them, to be offering that to someone who cannot legally drink, and presumably hasn’t drank before. He fully had the intention of getting Tristan DRUNK drunk then taking advantage of him. It would be one thing if he did give Tristan wine, which is bad because giving any minor alcohol is terrible, but he gave him absinthe, a very very strong alcohol instead. He was absolutely planning on getting Tristan very drunk and then raping him. There’s no other way to put it.
thats exactly what i was thinking, i only watched 2 episodes with him in it and i kinda already think he’s a drama queen, but then again idk i only saw like 2 episodes of him im on episode 30 sum of season 11
every time he opened his mouth, I cringed! I can't think of a moment when what he said wasn't cringe, although, "Sayonara Miles Hollingsworth" is still funny to me lol
idk what was up with these older shows. i always notice this same thing when i rewatch old shows i watched when i was younger. glad you're talking about this.
Unfortunately it's the sign of the times. Most people 30+ knew a lot of kids growing up that had age Gap relationships as teens, and no one blinked. It was mostly accepted up to a certain point. It's different now, and I guess that's all that matters
I don't think Johnny's "If i give it back you'd have no reason to talk to me" is supposed to be cute. I mean, he probably thinks it's cute or something but it isn't framed in a romantic way imo
I believe the age of consent in Toronto is 16 and the age to drink alcohol is 19. With some people not knowing this, those plot lines definitely hit harder, but it doesn't help make the student teacher relationship plot lines any less comfortable. And quick bonus round: Mia was 13 when she was pregnant, and her boyfriend at the time was 15. That's the difference between junior high and high school, so keeping this in mind when Lucas interacts with her makes it harder to watch.
Mia was held back a year due to her pregnancy as mentioned in S8 which placed her in Holly J/Anya's class. She would've graduated in 2008 otherwise. So her and Lucas were in the 13-14 age range at the time of her pregnancy.
I mistakenly thought the age of consent was 18, like it is in the U.S., but the age-gap relationships still make me feel sick. Like, those teachers need to find someone their own age to mess around with! And I wish reproductive organs were completely dormant when people are 13, cuz nobody that young should even be able to have a kid.
I get why they paired Johnny and Alli together from a writing standpoint because both of the actors had great chemistry but with that being said I their age gap. There was definitely an mature/immature imbalance
They did not have good Chemistry every scene they had together was awkward but I guess that was the point. So if you mean good chemistry in that way you right
Bro sav was a good pairing with a lot of the girls in the show idk why i love him x holly jay so much but THIS? As his last storyline and last love interest was vile because of the way it was portrayed as glorifying this student teacher relationship like this was so dumb to me especially because i loved sav
@kindanothere1321 Sav x Holly J is one of my Top 5 Degrassi ships of all time and it is greatly unappreciated. And I really liked Ms. Oh character and what she brought to the show before this whole Sav fiasco. They ruined her character and missed an opportunity for a good farewell storyline for Sav with this crap.
Actor =/= character. The actor was 24 or 25 at the oldest (the season aired in 2004 so filming was probably in 2003 and he was born in 1979). The character however is a student teacher meaning he's likely typical college aged and so at the oldest would be 22. They probably chose a slightly older actor to really emphasize the age difference since the actress playing Paige was 17 or 18 at the time.
Miss O was greedy. IMHO, she only rejected Sav after they made out for a while. I'm not saying their decision to end things was wrong based on the realization they arrived at. I feel like O strung Sav along when she knew it was wrong the entire time.
As a Canadian in Ontario, our Elementary/Highschool teachers go through a 6 yr program (4 years University undergrad and 2 years post grad at Teachers College) of post secondary and I believe Student Teachers (the position Mr. Oleander had) are usually on their final year. If that is the case that would more likely make him 24 when her was dating Paige unless he really speed ran his post secondary.
One critique, please switch up the scenes, ie don't play the same scenes over and over and over, idk why but it messes with my eyes and makes me nauseous 😅
Winston story with Mr Yates would’ve been amazing! Too see this happen to a STRAIGHT student (by straight I mean opposite in sexuality from the teacher as every teacher/student relationship was match in sexual preference) and maybe make it have Winston wonder his sexuality or see how the abuse attempt effected him. It would’ve been a UNIQUE storyline the show never did and didn’t repeat all over how a male teacher would effect a str8 male student. A lot time in male abuse it can be confusing because their body will respond easily aroused which can cause great confusion . I tried to type this as PG as possible but imagine that storyline! We also could’ve met Winston’s parents maybe they are the ‘strict Asian sterotyep’ maybe they are the ‘happy hard working immigrant ‘ stereotype (sorry Degrassi just loved to stereotype them POC parents lol (side note I love the growth of Sav and Allies parents specifically the dad that was a nice stray of the stereotype) but back to Winston! So then Winston may feel he has no one to talk to at home and since his best friend Miles IS bi the advances and abuse of Mr Yates could have had Winston wondering was he ‘just friends’ with miles? Was he his friend cuz he is also bi? Did he like miles? Hire me writers room! Y’all see the roads and main Winston storylines this could go to! U could also have him become overly trying to go all the way with Frankie to ‘prove his straightness’ as boys abused by men sometimes do causing issues with miles or miles fighting him over his sister asking why and what’s been going on to where Winston says what happened to him So many roads that story can go! You could even THEN have Winston leave to get help or the news get back to Tristan who still was willingly seeing Mr Yates without knowing what happened to Winston and come to realization it’s wrong ON HIS OWN and confide in Mya vs the stupid Mya beef
they didn't go into any detail with Winston and Yates, and that was a serious mistake on the part of the writers. They should have explored it more, instead of Winston just saying a passing comment, then the subject never came up again like wtf that was abuse!
I remember being in HS and all the freshman 13/14 year olds were dating seniors 18 and up. It seemed normal back then which is why I never saw an issue in this show. It’s not until becoming an adult did I realize the difference in the age and also the mentality.
I never forgave Johnny for doing nothing when JT got stabbed. I was even more repulsed when he got with Allie. I don't know for sure if Toronto has some kind of Romeo & Juliet type 14-19 age-gap law, but regardless, it was inappropriate for Johnny to be with this very inexperienced girl who was obviously too young and too immature to be in a relationship.
@@ninjanibba4259 The killer was also a kid and rightfully went to jail for his crime. Johnny being a kid is no excuse for fleeing the scene after he watched his friend murder somebody. Johnny should have gone to jail too, for being an accessory.
I won’t forgive the writers for what they did with Ms. O… All her caring moments and even stern ones now leaves a bad taste in my mouth after re-watching Degrassi now… 😢
15:48 I had a relationship like this. I was 28, he was 37. I broke up with him after he told me "It takes all his strength and energy to spend 24 hours with me" and that I should be more considerate...
@oooh19 I don't think they're saying that. Age gaps can still be a bad thing for certain relationships, even if they're both legal adults. This one sounds like an older person using their age to put down their partner.
@ throughout your adulthood you change like you’re different at 19 than you are at 25, 30, 38, 45, etc but yea while 18 is a legal adult you are still so young
Now that I think about it Sav and Alli had weird age gaps in their relationships, Sav had Kiki Palmer and Miss Oh and Alli had Johnny and Leo it was wierd
to be fair, did Mr. O lie about her lowkey stalking him? She joined his yoga class just to get his attention; she followed him to a whole bar and tried to insert herself? ~technically~ he wasn't wrong BUT as BriBreezy said, he's still a creep and a loser and deserved to be kicked out of "teacher's college" lmao
yeah i was confused about that because its literally impossible to teach at 19 unless you're like idk so smart you bypassed atleast 2 grades so you could finish uni faster
@9shanti yeah, that I was confused on because they kept saying a year older than Dylan so I assumed he was 19, but you are right usually students don't start becoming student teachers until they are near done with their degree so it was confusing for me I think they wanted to make him as young as possible to justify the relationship
Ugh Alli & Johnny was so bad then and now I knew from the get go it wasn’t good I hated how Johnny at first was against Alli chasing him but changes his mind? Like dude stand on what you said
I think that the the Tristan and Yates relationship was built up to be creepy (especially w the book) unlike most of the other BUT they really dropped the ball in how Tristan’s reaction to Maya never evolves. He never realizes that she was in the right and I’ve seen most fans use it as a reason to be hate his character even more, which is unfortunate cause it takes away from the fact that he was groomed.
I just want to point out that in Canada, the drinking age is 18. In Ontario specifically, the drinking age is 19. So while Charlie is probably in her early twenties (because of her business), she could theoretically be only 19 or 20. That doesn't make things better, but I wanted to make that known.
I'm sorry I'm barely a minute in but I'm still incredibly hung up on the thumbnail. How was Mr. pedOleander only 19????? I thought that dude was booked to be in his mid 20's. Cause, you know, the actor WAS in his mid 20's during filming. It's bad if he's only 19, but being in his mid-20's can and should have been brought up during production because if the show actually wanted to show how abuse is bad and not romanticize it, they should have mentioned that little nugget of information.
I thought Mr. O was like 23, and Paige was 15, but I don't know for sure since they didn't put a number to Oleander's age. The constant romanticization of these relationships makes me wanna scream!
@@SkyeID I just looked up the average age of student teachers and it's saying that they usually get field work in their final year of college. I'm not sure if there's a difference for Canadian schools or not, but you would think that's explicitly to get these people mature enough to not chase high schoolers. Him being ~22-24 makes perfect sense given the standard age bracket and only adds fuel to my "Mr. pedOleander dies in the Canadian wilderness while working as a lumberjack" storyline idea.
@@manband20they kept saying a year older than Dylan and he didn't deny it when Paige asked so I'm assuming he's 19? But usually student teachers are at least in their third or final year of college
@@briannawilliams97 I'm normally someone who complains nonstop about inconsistencies in scripts (having gone to film school to be a screenwriter and all) but considering the bigger issue is "YA show glorifies and romanticizes adult/teenager relationship" I am actually willing to let the semantics slide for once.
the one time they dealt with creepy teachers/age-gaps properly was with Lucy in Degrassi Jr. High, but that was way back in 1987...geez those Next Generation writers dropped the ball several times!
The Sav x Ms. Oh, relationship is by far the worst one. Not only was it highly unbelievable and problematic in the way they portrayed it, but it was character assassination for Ms. Oh, who was portrayed as a fierce young teacher who didn't take any crap.A woman like that would never even think of entertaining a relationship with a student, let alone Sav.
Thank you!!! I remember really annoyed how often this happened and everything was just justified. Can the next video be about the bs that Peter was pulling.
Degrassi is a show that is supposed to deal with tough topics but this was definitely a part theyvfailedxin by glamorise and womanising these relationships just wrong Also Paige who justclost her SA case against her rapist to having a grown man preying on her again? Why? Also Ms Ih still having a job afterwords? She should of been fired. I may not be a fan of Tristan especially how he treated Maya but no one deserves that I get he was upset with Maya but Maya did the right thing
Cuz it happens in real life . Paige been thru all that trauma she even turned gay afterwards , she could’ve been the one shot by Rick too .. same as Darcy how she spiraled after being raped .. spinner dated all ladies who were raped I peeped except who he married
Sav was atleast 18 and a senior , lmao thiers certain college students that’s 18 that have relations with older heads and I ain’t talking bout 26 and plus ya just mad dramatic . That was sneaky link vibes they introduced , it’s just unfortunate she was a teacher .. it’s thrilling
Nobody glamorised but you. yall are weird we need shows to show the reality of teenagers. Gen z are doing worst guys it's time to go around and talk to people.
I mean this what teenagers do or deal with on a daily basis in Canada and America. I am not sure what bubble yall live but not everyone life is beautiful as a teenager. Does it mean it is right ? Absolutely not. All bad guys do not get punished. This is a realistic show now that I've watched as a teenager now as an adult, I can testify that it was the reality of a lot of teenagers around me.
As much as I love degrassi for being an ahead of its time in junior high, high and TNG earlier seasons, there’s a point where it couldn’t keep up anymore. The writers eventually hit a wall and were no longer able to develop with the same level of nuance and awareness as its previous years. The Ms O and Sav arc makes me cringe so hard. It’s so poorly done and unnecessary.
I don't think it was unnecessary, but it could have been done so much better. Boys often get left out of the conversation when talking about teachers taking advantage of students, being abused (in all the ways), etc so it's an important topic to represent. They just did it really poorly.
I didn't know until today that he was legal, but that doesn't make it any better. There was a power imbalance, and there was also a life experiences imbalance. She was in her 20's, dealing with the complexities of adult responsibilities, while 17 year old Sav was at home with parents who were still treating him like a child and trying to plan his life for him.
Well, sure, 18 and 23 might not be the worst age difference in existence, but it's not exactly fabulous either. A person who's been a legal adult for less than a year is at a very different place in life than a person who's been an adult for 5 years. Not to mention even if Sav and Miss Oh did have a smaller age difference, there's still the power imbalance of her being his teacher
I quit watching another Degrassi RUclipsr who allowed their friend to bully me in a live stream for pointing out how gross the Sav and Mrs. O relationship was. There are people who will defend this stuff tooth and nail.
I watched seasons 1-3 when they aired before we lost the channel, I live in the US and it was one of those bonus channels, lady dinner watched the whole series on MAX. Binging the whole show I come to one conclusion……I’m really glad I’m asexual
im ngl im glad they showed how casual and "wink wink" the writers were about the age gaps because I was born on the 90s and that's exactly how it was. If the 20 something and teenager claimed to be in love then it was considered cute and no big deal no matter what people say now
The Bianca and the gang thing is pretty accurate. This one 15/16yr girl kept dating older guys. Everyone knew too. So this guy(25yrs)stole a car, left the scene. There was a female suspect with him. But the night before the crime he was hanging with the 15/16 girl. They found him he went to jail the police even questioned him who the girl he was dating only for details for car theft and I think another crime. They wrote each other while he’s in jail. The girl so proud of herself for dating older guys, she posted the letters on insta. The letter even included she lost a baby with him. So yea he was never charge for being with a minor!!
Alli must have daddy issues , Paige been thru all that trauma and flunk college and ended up having to fit in and not be on top of. Manny def has daddy issues so her relationship with that guy wasn’t bad , she was in college then experimenting . Johnny and Ali wasn’t even an age gap she was young but he wasn’t even old lol she wanted to be fast
someone in the comments wrote that student teachers usually start going onto the field when they've been in college for 3 years, so I was thinking he'd be 22. But that actor looked 26!
Sav who ever since he was introduced made his whole character about obeying his parents and keeping his dating a secret, who calls Anya the love of his life, who in season 10 finally stands up to his parents for a girl he loves and that girl was Ali, who finally gets the approval of his parents to date, decided to move on to another forbidden relationship. He could have gone out with Anya but I'm guessing since his parents would have approved he didn't want to anymore.
Truth of the matter is- it happens. I’ve had teachers flirt with me . Freshmans date Seniors. Some girls had “older😅” boyfriends. It’s just a show at the end of the day. Dramatic fictional stories.
Well a lot of people who are in their 20s or 30s do find teenage boys or girls attractive. As you mentioned, some of them who are either teachers, celebrities or artists tend to use their position in power or fame to these teenagers because they personally believe they can get away within since they’re famous. And the teenagers who are in these problematic relationships in terms of age differences are horny, irresponsible, vulnerable and have no understanding of what an adult concept of what love is. Most of them never had sex before and have clue what they’re getting themselves into. I’m not defending of these characters or condemning them. I’m just saying that this sort of thing tends to happen in real life and Degrassi shows these relationships in a realistic and problematic way
and also i dont get people who are freshman or sophmores wanting to date seniors im not saying the cant work but to me most relationships in high school end after graduation at the best if your lucky and to me if a freshman or sophmore dates a senior in my pessimistic opinion it will be over just as quickly as it starts unless you want to put up with long distance that long
Slight thing about Charlie, she is at least 19, not early 20s i know, not that big a diffrrence to justify it, but legal drinking age in Canada is 19, sometimes 18
Drew was for the relationship because he was not honest about what tipe of relationship and I think it wrong to beak up just after I don’t have a problem with the 2 to 3 age gap it was the way he treated her. Jonny it was the way he treat her and lies. If both were 4 to 5 age gaps I would have a problem. for me a 14 year old who is in middle school should only 1 to 2 years older. 16 and younger 1 to 3 years older and 17 and 18 3 to 4 years older. And for me no one should have sex under 16 or wait until you graduate from high school
I cannot believe how early I am to this video!! And it’s subject materials that I have absolutely been waiting for somebody to cover. Because we need to talk about it! Degrassi was so bad at inappropriate age gaps. Sav and miss O Was freaking egregious and I hated it
I know this wasn’t a romantic relationship but can we talk about whatever was happening with KC and the assistant coach? Like KC looked to him as a mentor and when I did a rewatch about a year ago at first I was like “ok KC finally has someone to confide in” then it got weird. Like he was buying him beer and a g*n and tried to have him sleep with a pro in front of him😟 I can’t believe I didn’t catch on sooner when I was younger.
when I rewatched, I felt so disgusted that this coach would give him beer and hiring a pro, and how old was KC at the time? I read that the age of consent in Toronto is 16, and the legal drinking age is 19. If KC was 15, that would make him a minor and not old enough to drink! It bugged me that the show just railroaded past that storyline, without talking about the aftereffects of KC being gr**med
@@SkyeID RIGHT! Like they just moved right along into him and Jenna’s pregnancy storyline! Like can I get him going to therapy or something that whole experience was traumatic.
I never like Johnny to begin with, not only what he did to ally but he was also friends with the guy who took away J.T 😢😢😢 so I was scared for her when they got together
I will always hate the Sav and Miss Oh storyline. I feel like the writers ran out of ideas for him after he broke up with Holly J. Him and Miss Oh felt so random. And they went through all that drama to not even end up together.
i understand zoe's mom being upset but as a woman you should know how girls are treated when people find out they're having sex so she should have privately confronted drew in front of the people who hired him.
Loved the video just wanted to say anyone who is talking about "cultural" differences because Canada's age of consent is 16, are trying to excuse abuse just because men who want to prey on young girls made laws that said it was alright for them too. There are places in the world where it's legal for girls as young as 8 to be married. They're "cultural" practices of men kidnapping young girls to make them their wives. Culture doesn't excuse disgusting behavior and no adult should be with anyone with teen in their age.
I think all of this has to do with Canada’s weird *ss convent laws. They are literally so insane. So many people fall through the legal “loopholes” and I think Canada needs to change the laws to higher ages. (Also most legal drinking ages in Canada are 18/19)
Also most age of concent is around 16 in Canada (with like limitations) it’s literally so bad here. So many predators don’t face the consequences they deserve.
i got to be honest i have never been in a relationship so you can take this opinion with a grain of salt but i just wonder if daiting someone on the rebound after you got out of a long term relationship is a good idea i feel like you should wait a while and i think drew should of waited awhile and also zoes mom should not have announced that in front of an assembly of kids that was a private conversation thing
I think older predators pursuing underage students is overall disgusting but can’t help but notice the ridiculous double standards when it’s a female aggressor vs a male. They treat the male student like a boss scoring older chicks & female students like victims. either role is a victim
Don't forget that time Anya dated that 26 old doctor
Yes! And that was one of the least disgusting age gap stories featured in the show.🤢

Thank you!!! The way she treated Alli during Vegas night when SHE was the one crying was disgusting, but I’m glad she did right by Zoe
A lot of crap in DeGrassi is "Teen goes through chaotic experience" and "The plot just moves on and makes someone else's crisis the main topic."
I think you could do a video about that in of itself, how DeGrassi ignores, dismisses or develops plot points.
Chances are probably not. there are some things I went though in high school that I dealt with in whatever way my teenage mind felt was best and many times i never found peace with certain situations but we move on because that's life. it stays with you of course and it influences your actions sometimes negatively sometimes positively in the future, which i think degrassi had a better trackrecord of showcasing.
life just goes on.its not inherently lazy writing (although degrassi is guilty of that at times) lol
also
there are no villains in Degrassi; it's a school with students and teachers. there are no redemption arcs for characters you perceive as a villain because, at the end of the day, we all mess up , some more than others (Peter....), and Degrassi had no interest in creating that romanticized storytelling style...

I don't think Fiona was a minor when she dated Charlie. She was supposed to graduate with Holly J but got held back a year, which would make her around 18 when she dated Charlie.
I'm always confused how old Charlie was?
True
Exactly very good writing
The relationship between Johnny and Alli reminds me of Jackie and Hyde from That '70s show.
no fucking way that mr. oleander was only supposed to be 19 😭 that man is EASILY mid 20s 😮💨😮💨 /nm
Mid? try late ew
Oh heck nah 😭😭😭
It would have made more sense especially if they are calling him a p*do
Wasn't he a student teacher?
That Tristan kid seems like the embodiment of cringe.
thats exactly what i was thinking, i only watched 2 episodes with him in it and i kinda already think he’s a drama queen, but then again idk i only saw like 2 episodes of him

I loved that Drew’s mom gave him the business.
idk what was up with these older shows. i always notice this same thing when i rewatch old shows i watched when i was younger. glad you're talking about this.
Unfortunately it's the sign of the times. Most people 30+ knew a lot of kids growing up that had age Gap relationships as teens, and no one blinked. It was mostly accepted up to a certain point. It's different now, and I guess that's all that matters
It has nothing to do with older shows, this type of things happen at any time period, even today
Regardless of age, student-teacher relationships are not ok due to the power imbalance.
this is true but adults dealing with minors/high schoolers is still looked down upon in Canada.
Lucas was 14 but yea it’s a big difference and so weird when he reminded her she used to throw down at 12-13
I get why they paired Johnny and Alli together from a writing standpoint because both of the actors had great chemistry but with that being said I their age gap. There was definitely an mature/immature imbalance
They did not have good Chemistry every scene they had together was awkward but I guess that was the point. So if you mean good chemistry in that way you right
@ no I meant the kind of great chemistry like I wrote in my original comment.

Sav and Holly J was a decent pairing. I hate Sav though.
Ain’t no way Mr. Oleander was 19. He looked at least 25.
@@moonlitxangel5771 Like how Mike Lobel was 20 when he joined Degrassi but was playing a teenager. Jay always looked close to 30.
They really mishandled this so many times
One critique, please switch up the scenes, ie don't play the same scenes over and over and over, idk why but it messes with my eyes and makes me nauseous 😅

I forgot how the Manny-paige beefwild manny was. Let me rewatch
U could also have him become overly trying to go all the way with Frankie to ‘prove his straightness’ as boys abused by men sometimes do causing issues with miles or miles fighting him over his sister asking why and what’s been going on to where Winston says what happened to him
So many roads that story can go!
You could even THEN have Winston leave to get help or the news get back to Tristan who still was willingly seeing Mr Yates without knowing what happened to Winston and come to realization it’s wrong ON HIS OWN and confide in Mya vs the stupid Mya beef
@@jczbas So many great ideas!
they didn't go into any detail with Winston and Yates, and that was a serious mistake on the part of the writers. They should have explored it more, instead of Winston just saying a passing comment, then the subject never came up again like wtf that was abuse!
@SkyeID I honestly forgot that Yates messed with Winston to tell you the truth. Another Degrassi writing staff missed opportunity.
I remember being in HS and all the freshman 13/14 year olds were dating seniors 18 and up. It seemed normal back then which is why I never saw an issue in this show. It’s not until becoming an adult did I realize the difference in the age and also the mentality.
They’re still in high school, so it’s not an issue unless sex is involved
Grade 9 is 14/15 and grade 12 is 17/18
I never forgave Johnny for doing nothing when JT got stabbed.
He’s a kid, you’re blaming a kid for not jumping into a violent situation which happened fast and didn’t know how to process it….wow
O… All her caring moments and even stern ones now leaves a bad taste in my mouth after re-watching Degrassi now… 😢
Why? Cuz she’s a person who is capable of having feelings?
15:48 I had a relationship like this. I was 28, he was 37. I broke up with him after he told me "It takes all his strength and energy to spend 24 hours with me" and that I should be more considerate...
28 and 37 isn’t even bad really as you’re both been adults for a while
@oooh19 I don't think they're saying that.
17-14 is not that big of a deal in isolation. In the context of Ali & Johhy's relationship though, it is odd. I never considered Johnny mature.

how far back in the cannon were you thinking of? Cuz way back in Degrassi High, Mr. Simpson's brother came out as gay.
It's odd how most shows frame students with age gaps. As if someone only hangs with students in their class
Degrassi has NEVER portrayed their agegap relationships in a positive light for a reason. I think they deserve kudos for that.
Disagree for many of the reasons the video addresses. They dropped the ball big time when it came to these storylines
Mr O was 22 atleast
and Paige was like 15?
yeah i was confused about that because its literally impossible to teach at 19 unless you're like idk so smart you bypassed atleast 2 grades so you could finish uni faster
@9shanti yeah, that I was confused on because they kept saying a year older than
Dylan so I assumed he was 19, but you are right usually students don't start becoming student teachers until they are near done with their degree so it was confusing for me I think they wanted to make him as young as possible to justify the relationship
Maya did right thing

Mr.Simpson is the only adult I trust on that show (until he had an affair)
Tbh?! 3 years apart isn’t even bad. 5+ years apart is wild when you are a teenager and they’re an adult
Yes 3 years is not that deep when you are 21 and 24 but 19 and 16 Is messed up 17 and 14 18 and 15 it’s messed up
It just depends on who you ask fr. Teens being w teens isn’t a bad thing imo

How was Mr. pedOleander only 19?????
I love ur degrassi videos
At least Sav was of legal age and I know that doesn't make it that much better but it could've gone a lot worse.

I didnt know degrassi was still going for this long lol. I remember when the show premiered.
It pissed me off when tristan got mad at maya like thats so wrong hes his teacher and took advantage of his vulnerability
I know that Allie was still using Johnny but not like this though.
I could never understand why Johnny was no arrested for being an accessory to a crime involving the stabbing if JT.
Alli must have daddy issues , Paige been thru all that trauma and flunk college and ended up having to fit in and not be on top of. Manny def has daddy issues so her relationship with that guy wasn’t bad , she was in college then experimenting . Johnny and Ali wasn’t even an age gap she was young but he wasn’t even old lol she wanted to be fast
wow I remember the Ali and Johnny relationship but I didn’t realize she was so young 🤮
Oleander was 19?!?
someone in the comments wrote that student teachers usually start going onto the field when they've been in college for 3 years, so I was thinking he'd be 22. But that actor looked 26!
im guessing no one looked up canada`s age of consent? otherwise you`d know how degrassi was able to get away with this
I don't think you can equate a relationship between students to one between a student and an authority figure.
23:05 In Canada Fiona is an adult at 18. There’s nothing legally wrong with that as they are both consenting adults.
Hey would you like to do a video on all of Emma’s relationships guys she’s been with she and love triangles she was involved in
or a video on the many times Emma was stubborn and unreasonable when it came to just about everything
I’m just saying that this sort of thing tends to happen in real life and Degrassi shows these relationships in a realistic and problematic way
and also i dont get people who are freshman or sophmores wanting to date seniors im not saying the cant work but to me most relationships in high school end after graduation at the best if your lucky and to me if a freshman or sophmore dates a senior in my pessimistic opinion it will be over just as quickly as it starts unless you want to put up with long distance that long
Just like aria and fitz on pll still grosses me out
Slight thing about Charlie, she is at least 19, not early 20s i know, not that big a diffrrence to justify it, but legal drinking age in Canada is 19, sometimes 18
Sav and miss O Was freaking egregious and I hated it
19 or 20, isn't that guy too young to be a teacher?
He was a student teacher wasnt he?
It not bad for 16 and 19 but it wrong because he was in charge so that is wrong a boss and employee or teacher and student
I hated how they portrayed Sav and Ms. O
i understand zoe's mom being upset but as a woman you should know how girls are treated when people find out they're having sex so she should have privately confronted drew in front of the people who hired him.
Is Charlie in her early 20s? Haven't watched it in a while but I assumed she was 18. You can drink at 18 in Canada.
After Paige’s relationship, it’s cringey to me that the later seasons is when Nickolodeon took over 🤢
Loved the video just wanted to say anyone who is talking about "cultural" differences because Canada's age of consent is 16, are trying to excuse abuse just because men who want to prey on young girls made laws that said it was alright for them too.
Even 18 is bad why do 30 year old date 18 year who are in high school
5 years age difference is bad for 16 year and younger it should be 1 to 3 years but not 4 to 5 years
i got to be honest i have never been in a relationship so you can take this opinion with a grain of salt but i just wonder if daiting someone on the rebound after you got out of a long term relationship is a good idea i feel like you should wait a while and i think drew should of waited awhile and also zoes mom should not have announced that in front of an assembly of kids that was a private conversation thing
I think older predators pursuing underage students is overall disgusting but can’t help but notice the ridiculous double standards when it’s a female aggressor vs a male. They treat the male student like a boss scoring older chicks & female students like victims. either role is a victim
Like that one episode of South Park
