I did homeschooling VERY briefly. When we started learning about religion, my teacher began talking about Islam being evil and there only being one religion. We ended up having a full blown argument. Btw, she was the ONLY black homeschool professional in Anne Arundel County at the time. What a coincidence she was a fucking Mormon fundamentalist. I argued that, while not being religious myself, it was wrong to say such nasty things about an entire group of people. My mom heard, and when the teacher left that day, she left her Book of Mormon. I'm not superstitious, but me and my mom went through it out of curiosity with gloves on. She ended up throwing it in the trash. Also, after the argument, my mom came to me and asked me if I liked her, I told her no, and she said good because in that case, she's never coming back to this house. Honestly my mom was awesome. I feel bad for being such a little shit. But anyway, yeah. Homeschool teachers are just fucking evil.

i acknowledge, as an education student, that homeschooling does have its benefits, particularly for students with disabilities and special needs. however, majority of homeschooling is not this and instead heavily sanitized christian teaching. for the most part, i hold this sentiment about homeschooling. if your child can adequately learn in a traditional school, then they should be in that setting

I took my childhood friend who is black to my predominantly CATHOLIC white school as a mixed (white passing person also non religious). It was such a crazy and different experience he literally was looked at like a zoo animal the whole time. And several people tried to make him be the certain of attention by making him dance to “black songs”. I have never realized how bad my school was segregated until now..

As someone who was basically forced through a private religious school all the way up to high school, I'm so glad I put my foot down and went to a public high school. It's genuinely refreshing to be around such a diverse student population and having such a wide variety of classes to take. School is a place for kids to meet new people and socialize, especially with kids who have different backgrounds, and learn about the world around them. I can not imagine how fucked up a kid's world would be if their entire childhood, they were holed up every day with bible-thumber teachers while their parents bleed money to afford the tuition
Same here, Baptist school until high school. I demanded to go to public because I played basketball and was my ticket to university scholarships. Parochial school was not going provide the same athletic opportunities. And yes, I did play collegiate sports.

I'm so glad I was homeschooled and fought fate. It's very difficult to go against everything your family and social circles think about politics and everything, but let me tell you, I won against the indoctrination and it's so worth it.

I was homeschooled in an evangelical Christian household my entire life up until 18, never once having gone to an actual school building. I often recognize that I could have grown up very ignorant and extremely right wing. Luckily, I somehow developed some level of critical thinking skills..
ADF came to the hotel i work at once. i was so pissed off that with all the "[brand name] love" shit they spewed they still allowed a known hate group to host an event at the hotel.

as a white person who has gone to multiple public schools in the south, yes our public education is very much still segregated. my elementary school had 3 black kids and they were all sisters…
One boy I met in college flat out said he didn't think poor people shouldn't be educated at all. I was pretty shocked sense he is a really nice guy. It was in a church but almost everyone in this group was liberal. His family is wealthy so maybe 🤔 from them.

I homeschooled my two youngest kids-the school allowed them to be bullied. I am an atheist and autistic/adhd (as are my kids) and endorse life long learning. Even my son who is a teacher thinks the schools are going to shit. In Canada, we have a Conservative leader who is watching every step the Republicans are taking and he wants to be like Trump. Sucky.

i’m autistic and the period of time i was taking classes at home due to mistreatment from the school and mental health issues was equally damaging to my mental health if not more than going to public school was. the real solution to autistic people suffering in public schools is to make public schools more accommodating, not to take the kids out of the schools. i understand that in the short term this is hardly possible and i don’t blame the parents of autistic children for taking their kids away from mistreatment and bullying in school, but the long-term solution is just to improve public schools so autistic kids feel comfortable and safe in them.
@@itsukizy.But that would mean allocating adequate resources. As the ultimate aim appears to be to raise a population of non-critical thinking consumers, by defunding and privatizing education, two generations should see that goal easily achieved.
Of course, those at the top of the socio-economic pyramid will have access to carefully tailored propaganda, which will reinforce the status quo and their own unquestioned position in the hierarchy.
My friends with kids... they would LIKE good public schools, but its been 20+ years of defunding them here near Cleveland... they are forced for their kids' sake to put more money and power into the much better private schools.

They're already successful at this in Texas. The same county that had the most capitol rioters, has closed a ton of it's public schools. Most parents in Texas feel that public schools are for the poor children.

Homeschooling definitely has a bunch of problems, but I think it’s also important to recognize that it can be really helpful for kids with medical conditions that make traditional schooling hard. Not to say that overall homeschooling is good. In an ideal world there would be better options for kids that traditional schooling doesn’t work/isn’t an option for but until then, homeschooling might be the best option in certain situations.
Too bad most examples are religious extremists.
realistically though banning home schooling is just as unattainable as improving public schools is in the current day. ideally the former would happen after the latter.
In a better world we would have no homeschooling and more options of schools that accommodates different kinds of kids.

two things relating to the first 6 minutes of this: i worked for a charter school for about two months that definietely suscribed to the voucher system and used it as a way to push chrisitian religion in 6-8th grade education (im talking genisis quotes in SCIENCE textbooks). Also I went to a small liberal arts school in Ohio for two years and woke up to posters made by men in white hoods to draw support for their "cause." people are fucking insane

As someone who grew up poor on the south side of Atlanta in the 70s & 80s, remembering what that life was like with my mom trying to make ends meet, I have questions for those proposing this type of change. HTF are poor families going to find the time and resources to go get certified and then to actually provide an education at least as thorough (eg 6 hrs per day, 5 days per week, covering many topics and disciplines) as a public school does?
Back in the 80s, my single mom raised me on one 40-hr-per-week full time job. These days, families that have 2 working parents are working multiple jobs with hours ranging from 60 to 80 hrs per week! My mom was absolutely exhausted when she got home from working her 8 hr shift.
How do they expect the education of Americans overall to get better when the truth is that more and more Americans become part of the poor income bracket every year which will prevent most parents from having the time, energy and resources to properly home school their kids?

There are valid reasons to do homeschooling, but they should still have strict regulations on curriculum and a government organisation doing tests and check ins to ensure students are receiving a proper education and care. That should be in addition to ensuring that every student, to the full extent reasonable, has access to quality public school education

Homeschooling saves kids’ lives. I’m not in favor private schools or parents who homeschool completely independently, but independent study programs need to exist, because sometimes it is the only way to escape bullying and heal trauma. My mother works for a program like this, it is publicly funded and has zero religious affiliation. I’m not kidding, some of those kids are on the brink of su*cide when they show up, I cannot stress how important it is
Yes, and there are other valid reasons for homeschooling, but I agree it shouldn’t be completely independently. Needs to be regulated and kids need access to quality public school education where possible too.
