  • Dr. Shirley Meng received her Ph.D. in Advance Materials for Micro & Nano Systems from the Singapore-MIT Alliance in 2005, after which she worked as a postdoc research fellow and became a research scientist at MIT. Shirley is currently the Associate Professor of NanoEngineering and Materials Science, University of California San Diego (UCSD) and the founding Director of Sustainable Power and Energy Center (spec.ucsd.edu ).
Her research group - Laboratory for Energy Storage and Conversion (LESC) - focuses on functional nano and micro-scale materials for energy storage and conversion. The more recent programs include the design, synthesis, processing, and operando characterization of energy storage materials in advanced rechargeable batteries; new intercalation materials for sodium ion batteries; and advanced flow batteries for grids large scale storage.

When excellent videos like these have only 300 likes and 9000 views, it's no wonder investors in 2020 don't understand the significance of battery day and battery innovation!

Great presentation that was clear but detailed and precise at the same time topped off with great enthusiasm (should make any young person interested in some aspect of batteries.... and now the rest of us just appreciate the great science: chemistry, physics and engineering that goes into such pervasive products). Finally, as a further complement this presenter reminds me another great presentation on a TEDx Talk by another female professor on “quorum sensing”.... go look it up (similar presentation enthusiasm and clarity, fantastic!) :-)

Both short term storage, under a few hours and down into sub second Lithuim wins
For 2nd half of duck curve slaying pumped hydro solves this evn at the lower utilization beyond a few hours.
Both leave water behind dams for one way drought and Re lulls power outs.
    Great talk

Battery day seems to have been 95% just the result of Tesla taking this talk seriously and working in the directions pointed by Shirley for at least part of the 3 years.
