Yeah this is completely false for the "optic nerve" (actually the nerves from eyes to brain form a weird cross that causes each half to be responsible for the opposite eye), but one nerve that does this detour is the recurrent laryngeal nerve. It goes from your brain through the neck, around a vein near the heart, and back up the neck to the larynx. This design "feature" is shared by all tetrapods, because we evolved from a fish that had the nerve in that spot, and the continuous deformation that created the neck afterwards only made the nerve longer but without being able to untie the knot that it got into. What this means is that even for Giraffes, the recurrent laryngeal nerve goes all the way down the 2m long neck, loops around the heart, and goes all the way back up, making for a detour of more than 4m.
