So I discovered this band was actually German after making this video. They had me fooled with the Norse vibes!

Well Germany doesn't really count as Norse but... Scandinavia and Germany both have germanic roots so you're not completely wrong. :-)
What I really like about this collaboration is the fact that Faun and Wardruna are actually bands from different countries working together on something, each with their own style and language but also complementing each other.
      Greetings from Germany!

Norse and Germanic culture developed out of the same proto Germanic roots with similar religion, language down to rune script. Thus German and Scandinavian pagan music groups gel very well together, given that alot of Old Norse are the closest holdovers to how similar ethnical groups in the Netherlands and germany would have sounded or what they believed in because they remained less changed while Germanic tribes down south and west adopted Roman, Christian then a mix of influences from the Frankish empire way earlier than Scandinavia.

German and Nordic culture were nearly identical before christianity pushed itself on us.

Faun is great. They make folk music using medieval instruments.
    Walpurgisnacht
    Von den Elben.
Yes, that’s Einar Selvik from Wardruna.
Do you know Danheim? Dark Norse music.

You are right, Einar was the guy in the back. Here's the translation
In icy past you once guarded
You threw Gungnir, you were a spear in the battle
You wandered the nine worlds as a wanderer at night
    You found Mimir's well again
    [Refrain]
    Nine days you hang
    From Yggrasil's twigs
    Nine long nights
    For 16 magical signs
    Magical sings to invoke death
To heal the ill and disturb the enemies
To hold flames, to control the swords
To catch ghosts and to lower the spears
    Hávamál, verse 138, 139, 144
    I know that I hung
    On a windy tree
    Nine long nights,
    Wounded with a spear,
    Dedicated to Odin,
    Myself to myself,
    On that tree
    Of which no man knows
    From where its roots run.
No bread did they give me
Nor a drink from a horn,
    Downwards I peered;
    I took up the runes,
    Screaming I took them,
Then I fell back from there.
Do you know how to write?
Do you know how to interpret?
Do you know how to color them?
Do you know how to consider?
Do you know how to consult?
Do you know how to sacrifice?
Do you know how to send?
Do you know how to kill?
    I know that I hung
    On a windy tree
    Nine long nights,
    Wounded with a spear,
    Dedicated to Odin,
    Myself to myself,
    On that tree
    Of which no man knows
    From where its roots run.
No bread did they give me
Nor a drink from a horn,
    Downwards I peered;
    I took up the runes,
    Screaming I took them,
Then I fell back from there.
Do you know how to write?
Do you know how to interpret?
Do you know how to color them?
Do you know how to consider?
Do you know how to consult?

Do you know how to send?
Do you know how to kill?

@@MattFarkas In a similar manner like Faun you may want to check out Oonagh with her songs "Gäa", "Orome", "Avalon" or "Hymne der Nacht". She also teamed up with Celtic woman for the English/ Germanic song "Tir na nÓg. Then there is the band Subway to Sally who sometimes have songs in this style combined with heavier tones. You could check out their songs "Kleid aus Rosen", "Die Rose im Wasser" or "Eisblumen" (too many to be honest :) ) If you are looking for a more masculine, sailor kind of music you could also check out Santiano with their songs "Santiano", "Es gibt nur Wasser" or "Mädchen von Haithabu" (meaning girls from Haithabu which is an old viking city in the north of Germany). Santiano also has a collaboration with Faun called "Tanz mit mir". Schandmaul is another really great band. "Kaufmann und Maid" or "Walpurgisnacht". There are too many :)

    • @jessicam.245
      @jessicam.245 2 года назад

@@MattFarkas addition to my answer: "Kaufmann und Maid" is actually a collaboration of several of these bands which also include Saltatio Mortis and Feuerschwanz, which are other great bands I can recommend. I see you're also reacting to heavy metal and stuff. Why don't I see some Rammstein on your channel? ;)

      @MattFarkas  2 года назад

@@jessicam.245 Because I did a reaction to Rammstein once and it was blocked by RUclips, lol. Kinda made me wary to do more, but maybe I'll try again with a different song!

@@MattFarkas Ah yes, I see. I don't know which one you did, but I think the official music videos are more likely to be blocked than their live performances. Maybe you could try one of those? I would suggest "Rammlied" from Madison Square Garden or "Du Hast" Live from Paris for a start. Also the youtubers who don't get blocked so often seem to pause the videos while they comment a few times. Seems to help. Rammstein is so worth to try ;)

Yes, Wardruna, Faun, Eivor, Lyndy Hella Fay, certain Norse or German, some Hungarian groups play this mesmerizing, folk metal combination type music that is very primitive rhythmic singing/chanting
That is meditative. Basically, you are falling under their spell…..spellbound. And it is a deep primal tribal spiritual sound that reaches all humans at our ancestral tribal roots.

A bit more of a folk metal piece with Einar Selvik (braided beard, from Wardruna) and Ivar Bjornson, is Kvervandi. Einar's drumming and Bjornson guitar work is just perfect. Both do vocals. NOT, the acoustic version but this live version: ruclips.net/video/ipGRoZjh1v4/видео.html

It's great, but German is the wrong language - far too clumsy the way vowels and consonants interact. This needs to be in one of the Norse languages; maybe Icelandic. OK, cue Einar Selvik. That's better.

Einar sings verses 135, 136 and 141 from Hávamál. Hávamál is a poem of 164 verses in total and is ment to represent a speech kept by Odin, who is referred to as "hávi", "The high", Hávamál is in other words the speech of the High. Hávamál contains wisdom and philosophy. The language in Norway and Iceland at the time was Old Norse. Although the oldest surviving copy is from the 1200s, the text itself is from the period 700-900 AD, created either on Iceland or in Norway or possibly a bit in both places. People were obviously closely connected to both places and other places. Modern Icelandic language is quite much closer to Old Norse than modern Norwegian language is, due to Icelandic not having changed quite as much over the years due to influence by other languages. The dialect of Old Norse used in Hávamál is more specifically called Old West Norse which was used in all the areas where Norwegians settled bringing the language with them, and it differs some from Old East Norse that was spoken in Sweden and Denmark at the time.

Oops! Sorry about not getting the stanzas right, it's 138, 139 and 144. And Hávamâl is as mentioned the sayings of the High One (Odin). The sequence 138 until 145 in the poem is about the Headen cult and magic of Runes ("Runatal").
