Actually, Star Trek was the first to have flip devices. They called them communicators and they used them to communicate with the ship and other crew members. Star Wars built on that and THEN, the tech industry finally got the idea and made them happen.

@@duanedrew6915 As a simple concept, I could say yes. Having lived through a lot of the communication age, I would say - not quite. The flip (Trek) communicator did several things that a walkie could not. I will leave out the "talk to ships in orbit" (a modern satellite phone could do that. But a "walkie-talkie" at the time, and much later could only send/talk OR receive listen. It needs a switch. But that is not the important difference. The modern cellphone is highly dependent on a massive infrastructure in the shape of a large amount of base stations, and (wired). communication to communicate between them. The Trek communicator has no need of that. OK, this is a technical problem more than a conceptual one.
Here comes the biggest difference: The Trek communicator can talk to ships in orbit - **through tonnes and tonnes of massive rock**, for example deep inside a cave or from the other side of a planet. The cell phone cannot do that.
Then again, as JMS said once when asked about the speed of ships, and replied that they fly at the speed of plot. The communicator was likewise a plot device.
In any case, the first flip phone came in the 90s, I had two different ones. 30 years after original Trek.

22:48--The main reason the swordplay basically just looks like slapfighting is because the technology was so new, and the props so fragile, that they couldn't do much beyond just waving and poking the things around. By the time Return of the Jedi came out, the technology had improved enough to where they could show more athletic swordplay with the lightsabers.
Check out the fan-made "Star Wars SC 38 Reimagined" if you haven't done so yet--it shows an updated interpretation that's far more intense and brutal.

You’re actually watching the special edition of this movie with updated effects. Creator George Lucas went back and added stuff when the technology improved. It’s been updated over the years.
Yes, there are real people in the costumes, except when they’re cgi, but that’s only once or twice
The creature in the trash compactor was a dianoga, aka a garbage squid.
The short answer of what happened to Obi-Wan is he became one with the force. He is in fact dead. Not all jedi can do this, there’s special training involved.

Don't forget this movie was RE-released in 1997, 20 years after the original, so a lot of the amazing advanced CGI featured here did not originally exist.
Still, the original had a lot of cutting edge effects for the late 70s. The lightsabers & laser sounds, and miniaturized sets/models being among the most impressive ; at least until the two sequels, which featured more of those things, plus complex puppetry and prosthetic costumes (i.e. Jabba The Hutt).

I think there's some confusion here; the old 'flip-phones' (I still have one, for emergencies), are generally compared to Star Trek's 'communicator' (in fact, that's what I call mine!), as they look similar and are about the same size, and you receive a communication by flipping it open, and end it by flipping it closed - the same as with Star Trek's communicator. When I got my first one, I felt like I was an Enterprise crew-member!
I don't ever recall seeing anything like a flip-phone in Star Wars.

When this movie first came out it changed everything. It is hard for people now to realize how groundbreaking it was. Honestly, 2001: A Space Odyssey had better special effects, but it was far more cerebral. This was probably the most exciting an action movie had ever been at that time. Though have to admit it makes SO much more sense after seeing Rogue One.
This first movie is actually heavily based on an Akira Kurosawa samurai movie called "The Hidden Fortress." Complete with a strong princess and peasants that are similar in relationship to R2D2 and C3PO. In turn Kurosawa was heavily influenced by American Westerns.

When your friend is talking about the phones she has Star Wars a little confused with Star Trek. Some people pointed out that when Star Trek came out it showed a bunch of the Devices in the sci-fi show that didn’t exist in the real world but now exist in the world today. For example you have a computer that sits on your desk where you’re able to speak to it and it will speak back. You have automatic doors where you approach the door and it opens automatically. You have life support machines in the hospital which helps keep a person alive. You also have the communicator devices which are very similar to a flip phone. You also have a Tricorder which is a handheld scanning device and now currently exists in the world too. This is what your friend is referring to she’s just got the two sci-fi shows mixed up that’s all.

A decade or two later, Martin Cooper, while working for Motorola, created the first personal cell phone, citing the Star Trek communicator as the inspiration.

The original lightsaber effect was incredibly impractical. It was a six foot long wooden dowel wrapped in reflective tape being spun at high speed via a motor in the handle. This was supposed to all be captured in camera without the use of any after effects, but it also made the wood incredibly brittle. The two actors were capable of a much better fight but the blades continuously snapped and it needed rotoscoped animation to fix the effect anyway. Had they not been over budget, they’d have reshot the fight, but they had to use what they had.

The opening crawl relates the events of "Rogue One" which concludes just hours before Vader boards Leia's ship! Don't skip it as it is one of the best Star Wars films around! If you would like to see more of Han Solo, I highly recommend you not skip "Solo" either which tells the origin story of Han. It's an underrated Star Wars film and tremendous fun!

After seeing "Revenge of the Sith", I urge you to see a modern update of the Vader-Kenobi duel from this movie called SC-38 RE-IMAGINED on RUclips channel FXitinPost.
    It will blow you away!
Why does the saga begin with Episode IV?
George Lucas was influenced by a variety of concepts and genres that he blended together in a unique hodge-podge one of which was 1930s serials that ended on cliffhangers and continued for many, many chapters. They initially played these serials on the radio and later as featurettes before the main movie in theaters. If you hadn't been watching the serial from the beginning and just showed up casually on any old weekend, you'd find yourself in the middle of a story. This is called "in media res." That's why Star Wars begins with Episode 4, "A New Hope".
Other influences were World War II aerial dogfight footage, Leni Riefenstahl's Nazi propaganda films for the fascistic imagery, Eastern Daoist philosophy, Flash Gordon serials, Akira Kurosawa's samurai epics, spaghetti Westerns, Errol Flynn swashbucklers, Edgar Rice Burroughs' sword-and-planet fiction, Frank Frazetta paintings and Joseph Campbell's scholarly writing on the hero's journey, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces". The reason these films struck a chord with worldwide audiences is because they tapped into both universal archetypes and specific images from a variety of cultural sources.
Star Wars is deeply embedded in global pop culture and is one of the few franchises to shape multiple generations. Star Trek is another major one. Star Trek is genuine science fiction whereas Star Wars is more space fantasy. The first one I saw in a theater as a little boy was "Return of the Jedi" in 1983. My parents -- and anyone else who experienced it -- remember seeing "A New Hope" in 1977 because their jaws dropped in disbelief when that seemingly endless Star Destroyer kept passing before their eyes in pursuit of that tiny rebel transport.
The non-CGI, PRACTICAL special effects were a quantum leap ahead of anything current and still hold up today. To promote the Prequel trilogy of the 2000's, Lucas remastered the Classic trilogy with DIGITAL effects which is why some elements look computer-generated. The two most narrative-oriented digital additions occur on Tatooine. In one, you get an early glimpse of Jabba the Hutt and the bounty hunter Boba Fett who figure prominently later on. This was cool. Jabba was originally played by a heavy-set man before being digitally rendered as a large slug which is why Han refers to him as a human being! In the other, the bounty hunter Greedo, who corners Han in the cantina, is shown to fire his blaster first whereas, originally, Han Solo fired pre-emptively under the table bushwhacking Greedo. This demonstrated Solo's rough, dangerous nature. The change caused a good deal of outrage but we're stuck with it now! Lol.
Artoo (R2-D2) is probably the smartest character in the whole franchise! Little person actor Kenny Baker operated the droid from within! Artoo is a type of droid called an ASTROMECH which are like ambulatory Swiss Army knives whose function is to serve as an onboard mechanic for starships. The two droids are meant to be the WITNESSES of the saga and appear in 11 of the 12 films! Lucas got the idea of servant witnesses from Akira Kurosawa's samurai classic, "The Hidden Fortress".
Wilhuff Tarkin is a Grand Moff which is a military term denoting his administrative authority over multiple sectors of the galaxy. Tarkin is top brass in the military and, under the Emperor's totalitarian regime, the military has replaced the civilian government. During the briefing, we are informed that the Senate has been abolished. Vader is the Emperor's enforcer but doesn't hold a political title or military rank. Tarkin is the man in charge of the nuts and bolts. Venerated actor Peter Cushing, known for playing Dr. Frankenstein, Van Helsing and Sherlock Holmes, portrayed the evil bureaucrat so soulless he could casually order the destruction of a planet teeming with billions and so respected even Vader deferred to his commands!
Han received a medal for coming through in the clutch but, as his first mate, Chewie deserved one, too! Unfortunately, he doesn't receive it until the Sequel trilogy.

Also the automatic opening doors comes from Star Trek not Star Wars. Star Trek inspired allot of inventions that today we take for granted. That is why I like Star Trek better than Star Wars it talks about the potential of humanity to evolve to a brighter future using their mind and hearts.. Keep on doing this reactions You can't go wrong with two pretty girls :)

She's not expected to sit in reverant solemn silence like some 12 year old nerd that sees it starry eyed (or some older dude whose still 12 inside). That said, whether she has seen it or not, she does appear legitimately invested in the story. Regular people do make jokes and take their eyes off the screen when they watch with friends at home. Hell, they even get up to the fridge or to piss and leave the movie playing in between...
