I'm not sure why everyone found it confusing. It goes 1000 then a 2 digit number that usually increases by 10 so after the last 1000 I knew it'd add 10? How is that confusing?
Fo those curious, here's my theory: What this trick does is that it alternates between a 10 scale addup and a 1000 scale addup and the 10 scale numbers all add up together to 100 so you mistake it with 1000; lets go through again: 1000 40 1000 30 1000 20 1000 10 So at the last point it's way easier for your brain to jump to 5000

You can count up to 1023 on your hands of you use binary. Your dominant hand will be the lesser/more frequent values. Dominant hand: Thumb=Unit (aka 1) Index=2 Middle=4 Ring=8 Pinky=16 First practice using that. To count to 3, first put out your thumb for 1, lower your thumb and extend your index for 2, then keeping your index raised, raise your thumb for three. Basically, it's simple math using assigned positional values. If you need more examples, extend your ring and index finger. That's 10. In your non-dominant hand, assign values 32 (thumb), 64 (index), 128 (middle), 256 (ring), and 512 (pinky).
