    Thanks for the lecture, sounds like a great book! When did the Americans figure out they were being eavesdropped on and what was their reaction?

    Everybody seems to forget that Mexico was already fighting its own civil war. Lasting 10 years (1910-1920) and 1 million casualties. In no way Mexico would be able to wage war agains the US.

      Mexico is still in a War, Cartel Wars which affects everyone and everything. It is sad that the country that my parents were raised is now in a big chaos.

      Yes the civil war had taken place, and there were a lot of people killed. However, that is not to say Villistas and other Veterans of the War could not have waged a guerrilla hit and run war along the SW border, especially if supported by German advisors and weapons that were coming in through the southern border and ports of Mexico. This type of warfare could have diverted a number of US troops and other resources which would have impacted the Western Front contribution in 1917 and 1918.

    It's a shame that it isn't made clear that Nigel de Grey did most of the decryption work on the Zimmerman Telegram.

    In Tuchman's book on the Telegram, she has seem to take the position that the telegram did have a great influence in the decision. Also, we must not forget that between 1911 and 1921 there was still great tensions along the SW border between the US and Mexico. Also historically, there was a great tension between Japan and the US.

    At 6:02 the ppeaker states that Canada was a colony of Great Britain at the time. To be fair Newfoundland and Labrador (which would become Canada's 10th province later) was a colony. The rest of Canada was an independent country.

    • @-danR
      @-danR 2 года назад

      Canada ceased to be colony in 1867.
      As a historian he ought to be better informed on this, but it's possible that many academics have such a marginal knowledge of Canadian history that they overinfluenced by a casual acquaintance with the slow patriation* of Canadian executive, legislative, and judicial functions from formal approval by the monarchy. However ceremonial the purpose of such things, the fact that things Canadian did in fact have to be signed, by Canadian law itself (if a legally _self_ imposed requirement), into law _in Britain_ , is something entirely alien to the American mind: you cut off from the ruler and you rule yourself and you're done with it, no ifs ands or buts.
      To this day there are some civil cases that must appear before a British court, but all criminal cases have been patriated.
      It was still possible to be born in Canada during WW1 and still hold British citizenship. Was such an individual in the class of... colonist? If all Canadians had that status in 1914, would that not still make them denizens of a colony? Probably not. I think...

This also happened to me, in a post I made on a video about the Spanish Civil War. It was about music, and non-political. But I cited the name of a certain well known German marching song (I won't mention it here, lest I draw the attention of the RUclips censor-bot), and it was deleted.

      @@Pootycat8359 happens all the time. But I have the same question. What was the role of the (German)zionists in deciphering the telegram in the UK? I think BIG. Are we allowed to know? Of course not!

    • @Pootycat8359
      @Pootycat8359 Год назад

      I don't think there's a "paper trail," or at least not one that's not carefully guarded. But what I've been able to make out, is that Rothschild contacted fellow Zionist, Zimmerman, in Germany, through his channels, who then sent the telegram to the German ambassador in Washington, D.C. That version was encrypted in Germany's latest code. The German ambassador then relayed it, in an OBSOLETE code (which Zimmerman knew the British had cracked), to Mexico City. Zimmerman knew the Britts had their spies all over the U.S. (just as he had his), and that they would intercept the telegram and decipher it.
