Try the Mead composition books that say "High quality paper" on the front (though some of the rougher stuff may say that too). The nice FP paper ones I've only seen them in the 5" x 7" size. Paper is made in Vietnam, and is nice and smooth, though it does ghost heavy enough that with some inks/pens it may only be one sided use.

I think I found this channel in 2023, so JG3 Reviews is my favorite fountain pen find of 2023.
Most important isn't the pen. It's the power behind freedom of expression. Watch the news. See the heathen rage. Know that every well-intentioned stroke of a fountain pen is worth a hundred times the impermanent points a berserker might make.
Fountain pens, word processors, typewriters - even cuneiform, if you want to be a stick in the mud - are tools of high calling. They all humble me.
Be well, JG, and all the best for 2024.

The quality of the nibs on Chinese pens has improved immensely over recent months. I have purchased a number of Jinhao models for myself and friends and all have written very well straight out of the box (bag) and the finishing is fantastic. I have some expensive, premium fountain pens that don't write as well as some of the new Jinhaos.

Thank you for this wide-ranging and very interesting compilation of favorites! I will be watching for your HongDian N9 review. My own favorite new pen this year - and there have been some great ones especially from HongDian and Asvine - has been the Asvine V126 vac-filler in stealth translucent black and matte black #6 EF nib and hardware. The balance and feel in the hand are exquisite and the bouncy nib is the smoothest EF ever.
As you say, HongDian has introduced a wide range of high-performance stunners this year and shows no sign of slowing down. They continue to make significant improvements affecting function, like using ebonite feeds, well-engineered filling systems and converters, and excellent re-engineered nibs.
I also want to congratulate Jinhao on their revolutionary 2 ml screw-in converter, first introduced with their inexpensive big pen, the 9019 Dadao, which also has the #8 nib introduced on their earlier x159. I’d love to see screw caps and extra converters for travel and ink variety - who needs a built in piston-filler, which can’t be switched out and usually has less ink capacity?
Finally, I want to point out my favorite inexpensive fountain pen-friendly paper, Studio O. A. Spiral Notebooks. Their white paper is thick (120 g/m2, more than Clairefontaine), smooth, and microperfed on each page with no punched holes. Of the four options, my fave is the light gray dot grid. I write on both sides of every page with a variety of nibs and inks with no bleeding or ghosting. The notebooks are well-made, with polypropylene covers and a pocket page in back. I found them at Amazon for ten bucks for a set of three.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  5 месяцев назад +2

I'll have to look into the notebook, thanks for the heads up! And I agree, the Jinhao 2ml converter deserves a nod. That 9019 should have been an honorable mention...fun pen.

@@JG3Reviews : let me know if you have trouble finding the notebooks on Amazon and I can send you a link. I can’t find any sign of where they are made. Apparently they’re not offered by at least some of the European Amazon branches, from a comment when I posted about them in a Doodlebud thread. I love them. They come in ruled, 1/4” and 1/5” grid, and the dot grid that I like.

I would add the Jinhao Dadao 9019. It is a monster pen, huge converter (rivaling the capacity of piston fillers), number 8 nib that can be swapped with the x159 and terrific colors. I especially enjoy my turquoise version. The Wing Sung 630 was also a terrific add in 2023.

Great video, fine Sir! Great list as well. Your perspective is super interesting. I am new to FPs with a limited budget and poor penmanship. Year two for me and my favourite pen so far is Penbbs, 456 cloud (the build quality and translucency is captivating). The best surprise is my Majohn A1 (matte black w/clip). The A1 has me saving up for a Pilot Vanishing Point which will be my first gold nib. At the same time, the Jinhao x159 F and M nibs got me hooked on the hobby. Buying multiple colours for under $100 Cdn was just too much fun. Happy New Year!

The Scriveneir EDC is definitely the best pen of the year! By far the smoothest steel-nib pen I ever used, with slight friction. Ink flow is steady and never breaks during writing. The stiffness of the nib is right at point. This is a very balanced pen and its quality far exceeds other pens at the same price level.

Well, now . . . favorite pen to give away, Jinhao 82, as you have discussed. I keep one with an EF nib for addressing cheap envelopes with pigmented ink. Favorite to write with is also in another category, favorite "craft fountain pen", Relic Pens York Minster, into which I swapped a Bock titanium nib -- although the Bock steel nib was perfectly fine. This pen is of stabilized, historical wood with a nice resin. Totally concur with your assessment of Hongdian. Thanks again for a lovely review; and bless your new year with good health and great joy!

Happy New Year! I don’t have any of the pens reviewed. I have considered getting a Jinhao 82, but I have bought few pens this year. My favorite purchase of the year was a Rose Gold Kaweco AL Sport. I did change the nib out from a fine to a medium that I have on hand, but I absolutely love the feel and the color! Online, I don’t think that the color comes through very well; maybe that’s my screen, though. I do love my Kaweco pens, but they aren’t grail pens for me. I would love to buy a Sheaffer Lifetime Imperial, but I can’t justify buying pens unless I get a great buy as I did on the Rose Gold AL Sport. Have a blessed and Happy New Year! Being kind of early to the fountain pen game for the time after they originally went out of favor (1983 got me started), with one that would have been thrown out back then, because everyone only wanted gold nibbed pens, an Esterbrook J with a 2668 firm medium.
As a result, I tend to recommend vintage pens for the value and unique writing experiences (unlike the many Jowo nib holders out there today that cost more than most vintage pens.) My personal favorite gold nibbed pen is the Wahl-Eversharp Skyline from the 1940s. Unless you can be very careful, avoid those with an ink window. They're the first 2 years, and very brittle, so can break easier. Just the nicest gold nibs I've used, and what's not to like about the Art Deco design? Plus, you hunt and have patience, and don't mind 5 minutes of work to put in a new ink sac, you can get them for around $30 USD, less than some modern Chinese pens. (And my first love. Vintage Esterbrook. Regularly available for under $25 USD, and frequently still work on the original ink sac (I've had multiple vintage that still work, making the claim that a latex ink sac only lasts about a decade questionable at best. I have several pre WWII Esterbrook "Dollar" pens that have a working, original Esterbrook branded sac. Almost 90 years beats a decade.😁) Replacement sacs from the US are still made on the original molds, to the original thickness, with the same formula latex as the original ones. And Esterbrook pens are dead simple to restore yourself, and are durable enough to pass on to your great grandkids.
And I really agree with you, James, about the Jinhao number 5 nibs. Haven't met one I haven't liked. (I don't need a bigger nib. Most vintage nibs are a similar size, and I've liked the majority of those I've used, too. In fact, the Jinhao number 5 fits in several vintage pens. I originally swapped one into a throwaway Arnold, and improved it.😁

I had the Mythos but i couldn't get the nib to wrote well. I even got a replacement nib and still had the same result 😢.
I haven't gotten the Scriviner. I would like to get an Eureka pen but getting one os tough due to payment issues.
I have a Leonardo Momento Zero Grande. I think it os is like a 1,
.5 version. The grip has changed loke the 2.0 but now ink window. It is still a fabulous pen. Love the feel. Love the nib.
Thank you for your 2023 review.
    Happy New Year to you!

    Hello James.
For my collection the categories are based on pricing as I rarely have enough to get a $50 to $100 pen and over $100 only came as used pens which came under my $100 limit.
Those which I was able were purchased with a lot of study and saving to get it.
Others under $50 came after some savings and those under $20 came under normal conditions. Now that you know my pen choices here they are.
In my higher priced category, my number one is the Waterman Harley-Davidson pen. I'm a freelance photographer and often need to have a pen and paper for information. For the past year, this pen has been in my pocket. When it comes to people names, I just let the person print there name for me since my hearing is compromised. The Harley-Davidson pen has been super reliable for me and everyone else at even when they unknowingly use it upside down.
My runner up for that category is the Xezo Ocean 2.
For my middle price pen category, #1 is any Waterman pen in that price range. I say any because I own and use several of them and don't really know which is best.
For my low cost category it has to be the Jinhao #159. This has been a great pen for the past three or four years.
As an honorable mention I'll add my two dip pens and they are not the standard glass type. They are somewhere around 60 years old. The excellent Esterbrook dip-less pens and the #484 desk holder set. I use those everyday. One has a fine tip with Namiki Black ink and the other is a medium nib using Monteverde Emotions Hope ink.
(I forget the Esterbrook numbers of the nibs.)

I've always loved fountain pens, but 2023 was the first year that a threw myself headlong down the Rabbit Hole! Lol. My favorites are my vintage pens & I'm considering learning how to restore them myself. I too got a Visconti Mirage Mythos in the brown/bronze color & sadly that pen has been disappointing. Every time I write with it, I end up with a large drip of ink coming out of the nib. So I'm going to have to try to figure out what to do about that. Because of that, I haven't really had the chance to write with it much. My overall favorite brand on the non-vintage side has been Pilot. A Vanishing Point is what started this all for me this year & I have picked up several other models from Pilot since then & every single one has been amazing. Couldn't agree more about Hongdian as well! Love everything I've bought from them... Currently awaiting delivery of their A6 Skeletonized pen. Jinhao has been a little hit or miss for me, but man, if they would come out with some different filling mechanisms, that would be awesome! A piston filler Jinhao? How cool would that be! Thank you, James for your honest reviews, I've learned a lot this year! Happy New Year to you and your family!

Frustrating about the Mythos! I wonder if their customer service would be of any help? I haven't had to use it, but I'd hope so.
Those Pilots are great, aren't they? Happy New Year!

Personally, 2023 was all about Lamy Al-Star Petrol, TWSBI Eco Bronze in Indigo, and Jinhao x159, all of each had its fair use. For inks, it has to go to Diamine Prussian Blue, and Iroshizuku Asa Gao. Happy New Year, see you in 2024.

When we see depressing world news, it is good to tune to our favorite fountain pen channels and believer there is an oasis of peace -and pens!- somewhere.
In my pen journey I am in the stage to swap nibs to see if a good pen can be made a great pen. Then if the writing is improved, I suspect the ink flow could be better... I guess I am now inching toward more expensive pens... but the problem I have is that too often, holy grail pens are big if not very big and they do not feel good in my hands that are, frankly, not those of a pianist. It is a bit frustrating. It would be as if all the best shoes are only available for sizes 12 and up.

You might like some of the Japanese offerings. Pilot's pens are pretty reasonable diameters, as well as others. It is funny that so many upscale pens lean toward exaggerated dimensions, when that is rarely what determines a good writing experience. Some are just made to be desk trophies, it seems.

Tomoe River really lives up to its reputation in my books. The Wing Sung 630 wins as a general knockabout value for money pen - great nib. Grail pen? Pilot Justus 95.

I should have had bad luck because I bought a Jinhao 82 on july and three or four days after I used it for the first time its body cracked. I decide not to pay any money to replace the pen so I glued it, put it in a case with some other chinese pens and never used it again.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about that. I once had to give a follow up warning and pull a review of a Wing Sung that was great the first few months and in the review. About a year in its body and cap just started disintegrating (the nib was excellent and now resides in another pen).
