You're a man after my own heart. I really enjoy doing historical rundowns, lists, and showing progression of things. I watched many of your videos while travelling recently, so thanks for the entertainment while i was stuck in transit.

Hey, thanks for doing all these videos! I've been loving going through them, as an original Kenner collector/player. And I occasionally delve into collecting a few of the newer ones, with long breaks in-between. So, the full evolutions are GREAT, because I wasn't keeping track and love seeing what I've missed. :)
One series I skipped out on was that initial Powers of the Force launching in the 90s (although, ended up getting some of the better releases that came a little later and during the prequels). I cannot BELIEVE that PotF R5 missile launching droid, haha. Odd and not a great looking sculpt (obviously), but a fun idea and design to get to look at, for sure! Too many forget that these are/were toys. And that's also what is so appealing about the original line, to me, at least.
Thanks so much and I'm looking forward to more!
May the force be with you!

Thanks for the comment! Yes it's fun to see the changes to these characters over the years. I love digging them out and getting them ready for the reviews. I usually only display the best version of each figure to save space. I don't have the heart to get rid of the older versions. There is something special about all of them!

The third leg can be removed from the 2006 Saga version. Hasbro also released a remote controlled one with a lightsaber remote. Likewise a 6 inch version was released around 1998 for the large size scale.

Nice video for such an under appreciated droid! I loved my R5 “twin” of R2 when I was a kid, after I got my R2 w Sensorscope, he, orig R2, (and a couple previous battered R2’s) and R5 would go on droid missions with 3PO and Death Star Droid (who turned out to be a double agent for the Empire! shock!!!) and power Droid - great times! I really detested the middle launching R5 as it was stupid for a droid to do that, and the design was just terrible. So many of the “modern” era R5’s have been terribly sculpted, even the Black Series R5 is just the wrong head shape and proportions, but I won’t get started on my criticisms of the Black Series R2 and Astromech sculpt proportions, woefully wrong scale and just lazy, bad sculpting in general because I’d literally write paragraphs (people probably hate seeing me post and get carried away on how pathetic Hasbro’s “effort” was on the Black Series R2 and all the cash grab releases based on him). Supposedly Hasbro will correct all these complaints on a new Astromech sculpt debuting on the 40th Anniversary R2 D2 in Wave 3 of the Black Series Revenge of the Jedi wave this year, but we’ll see. Thankfully we have Figuarts near perfect R2D2 figure which I can’t -raise highly enough, with a solid 2nd place R2 from Mafex, both in *proper* 6” scale so the Black Series can have accurate droids even if they aren’t Black Series figures! ;-) And there’s even the Bandai R2 and R5 model kits which are beautiful as well! Accurate detail, accurate proportions, razor detail, it’s all there and beautiful to behold. Truly boggles the mind why Hasbro’s sculpt is so terrible (probably the same person/intern/pet chimp that sculpted IG-88?). And R5 will be back on our screens with a beefier role in Season 3 of The Mandalorian and will actually travel with Mando and Grogu! Here’s hoping he doesn’t make another noble sacrifice but instead hangs around awhile and lets us get as attached to him as we are to R2! maybe they can even meet up and go on a Droid Mission just like he did all those years ago with my younger self and all my beloved toy action figures…sigh, wonderful stuff indeed! :-) Great video! :-)

If you haven't seen the Mandelorian season 3. R5 is going to be Dhen Djarin and Grogu on a mission or two.

That's awesome! I didn't realize that. Perhaps we will see R5 D4 back in action figure form again!

Noticed that the vintage version has red legs and not blue.

Brilliant review of R5. Which do you prefer as definitive version the SAGA version or the TVC 3pack where they cleaned up his weathering a little but same sculpt?

Thank you for the kind words! I still prefer the Saga (weathered) version. How about you?

I wonder if the new sculpt Astromech Hasbro announced for the Black Series which has since then just been totally forgotten by Hasbro with other figures announced after being shown and even shipping and R2 has yet to even be glimpsed!!! Hopefully Hasbro will actually assign a sculptor who tries and can measure things for this new Astromech body since the first one not only was horribly underscaled but also the wrong proportions and just very poorly made (Figuarts R2 is nearly perfect and Mafex’s R2 is a close 2nd!) Now that R5 has become Mando’s Astromech, I’m wondering if we may see the new sculpt debut with a Mandalorian release of R5, followed by R2 in the supposed 3rd Wave of Return of the Jedi Vinatge Carded Figures? Anyone know any details or inside info they want to share with a crazed Astromech fan? Really looking forward to the new R2 (and other Astromechs!) and Hasbro can rival Figuarts if they only set their mind to it, so here’s hoping they put some effort into it this time!

With these modern figures of R5-D4 (except for black series) they never bother the paint the three red panels on his back. Frustrating.

That's a great point! I have never paid attention to the back panels. Here's hoping there will be a fix for that if they ever do the Mandalorian version of him.

Do tell. I am looking at the Kenner/Hasbro figures only. Any other scale is not reviewed and the Remote control units are not included as they were not part of the main line. Feedback is always welcome! thank you for watching.
