Next time your in the area leave the car at Lancaster station, get the train to Barrow, then the coastal train up to Carlisle and catch the train down the West Coast Main Line back to Lancaster. It can be pricey catching all the different trains however it makes for a great day out and scenery to die for, the coast on one side and the Lake District Fells on the other, plus you can take in more of the countryside when your not driving.
