I think people don't understand that "powerful" and "strong" have very different meanings in Tolkien's writings unlike us who usually use these two words interchangeably, that's why people get mad when someone put Feanor lower than Fingolfin. By "powerful" Tolkien refers the a character's essence, skills in craft and heritage, one the other hand, by "strong" means their martial power, physical strength and skills in battle. A good example of this is, Morgoth was the most "powerful" Ainur and Tulkas was the "strongest" Ainur. So when the two of them fought, Morgoth got Stockton Slapped to the ground even though he was the more powerful one. So its accurate to put Fingolfin above Feanor. Nice video, looking forward to the part two👍.
Yes, I tried to explain my thinking behind the video as I clearly didn’t put Fëanor first and Galadriel second. Because I talk purely who wins battles here …
@@monitor-mindtheover-void6712 Yes, Fëanor and Aulë require ALT+0235 for the diaresis, while Fingolfin and Tulkas may be written without consulting a character map. 🤣
Great list! I hope Beleg Cuthalion and Mablung Of The Heavy Hand receive an honorable mention. The only two Elves of the Kingdom of Doriath to march off to war to serve with High King Fingon of the Noldor in the battle of Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
Ramming was one of the most common naval tactics until both cannon and how to use them properly became common (but crazy English captains of Flower class corvettes were ramming U-boats of twice their displacement in WW2). So Vingilótë rather than Eärendil personally may have struck the killing blow on Ancalagon the Black.
A truly great overview and honest choices! I agree with your Gil-Galad perforation, it always made more sense to me in the Silmarillion. Glad to see Maedhros received his spot :)
Really I'm not sure if Gil Galad deserves to be any higher. In fact, even putting him as high as he already is perhaps gives someone too much credit who only sort of won his only fight, which was a co-op fight at that. And as powerful as sauron was, I don't think he really compares to the host of Angband that most of the first age elves were fighting against. I can totally understand it either way, but I think Helen was already pretty generous with his placement personally.
#1 Fingolfin, for reasons that others have mentioned, with Bernard from the Santa Clause 1 & 2 movies ranked right after him and Feanor as a favourite Elf character.
I think people forget that Tolkien was a Catholic and therefore would have almost definitely believed God Himself told Joan of Arc to lead an army of the French to victory. Yes, he did not live in a time when women often fought in battle, but if there were one exception among the Elves, it would probably be the one he compared to the Virgin Mary (and Catholics, if you are aware, hold the Virgin Mary in the highest regard of any created being, as Spiritual Mother of All Christians, Tolkien being no exception). I don't know if she fought in the banishing of Sauron from Dol Guldur (the films depict Elrond taking up arms, though rather this is true to the intent remains unknown). However, I think it fits the character perfectly from the relatively little we know about her in the First and Second Age, even if she is only mentioned to fight in one battle. Plus, descriptions such as "Galadriel, the fairest lady of the house of Finwë and the most valiant" and "the only woman of the Noldor to stand that day tall and valiant among the contending princes", not to mention "the greatest of the Noldor, save perhaps Fëanor" do seem to strengthen (though not outright confirm) that idea. I only wish the Amazon show had not given "warrior Galadriel" such a bad name.
Now you do have something to discuss!!! Did you see all the new character posters. The bottom one is the easiest!!! Wow there's a lot of characters coming!!!!
Personally I believe Feanor to be an even greater warrior than Fingolfin, which makes his early downfall even more tragic, as it is not through any lack of skill or power but his pride. Morgoth clearly feared Feanor and made his death his top priority, after this was accomplished he didn’t seem to care much for remainder of Feanors host.
I think he was more afraid of Feanors capabilities as a leader and his standing than his actual battle powers. Similar to Turgon. Morgoth knew, from these people his fall would come … not in single combat though. I think this is why he was so surprised to see Fingolfin at his door …
That’s true, I think that Morgoth would have feared to face any of the princes of the Noldor due to the now Mortal state of his body, and only chose to fight Fingolfin due to his pride. I think that Feanor being alive and relentlessly pursuing Morgoth was also a challenge to his pride in a similar way Fingolfin showing up to his front door was. Although I think there’s still merit in saying that since Feanor was the greatest in all parts body and mind and also the most skillful, he would have become the greatest warrior.
Just imagine if Feanor and Fingolfin could've somehow overcome their differences and created an alliance of their respective Houses. Morgoth wouldn't've stood a chance.
This is terrible! I couldn't make it past 3:00. Creator of the video thinks he/she knows the lore. Thranduil wasn't a silvan elf. Confused on the names. I'm not stating opinion I'm stating a Tolkien fact!
I trust Darth Gandalf's (another Tolkien RUclipsr) numbers for the participants in The Battle of Five Armies much more than Peter Jackson's which are way too high.
Lol orcs shit themselves. Galadriel sure i believe she was a very skilled archer in her youth, and we know of what 4 battles at lest , her army won ( and her army is named after her i believe galadrim ) anyway minds win battles ( pen is mightier than the sword) i can think of several middle ages women who led army's, ( queens) and a few others before that.

@@thecluelessfangirl809 you did great job explaining that and the list is looking every accurate👏.

When I do a greatest bowman of all time I’ll add him 😉😉
Earendil for top 10, surely!
Though, I wonder if being a star in the sky might disqualify him, as badass as it is.
He might not qualify since he's half elf, who knows.
I only did elves sadly, I didn’t add Luthien, Earendil etc. :(
Yep, sadly him, Luthien and some others don’t count :(

Thanks Helen, great subject, loved the art. Indeed Jamie Lannister son of tywin. Lord commander of the kings guard aka the king slayer.

Amazing video as usual for you, Ms.Helen. Loved it. I'm about to watch the second one. Most likely going to be as splendid as this video. ♥️
None of them would have stood a chance against Farmer Maggot.
😂😂😂😂
I wonder if Farmer Maggot's hounds are descended from Huan?
I’m loving guessing who the top 5 are 💕. This is a fun video. Feel free to do a mini re-cap so we can see more Lee Pace pictures 😁
Nice list although I think Gil-Galad should be in the top 5.
😉 I said, we will all different ones listed 😂😂

#1 Fingolfin, for reasons that others have mentioned, with Bernard from the Santa Clause 1 & 2 movies ranked right after him and Feanor as a favourite Elf character.
Predictions for top five:
5) Elrond
4) Fingon
3) Ecthelion
2) Glorfindel
1) Fingolfin (obviously)
I reckon Fingon, Ecthelion, and Glorfindel will all make the list
I'm not so sure about Elrond being in top 5, but he's my favorite elf so its good.
I like it, but NO 😉 wait till Sunday (some yes though😉)
You might be onto something there Luke 😉

Agreed cavalry is unlikely, except maybe the officers or or royalty. Or scouting party's

Good analysis but Feanor died to balrogs and Fingolfin wounded and died to Morgoth, that shows who's the greater warrior.
I think he was more afraid of Feanors capabilities as a leader and his standing than his actual battle powers. Similar to Turgon. Morgoth knew, from these people his fall would come … not in single combat though. I think this is why he was so surprised to see Fingolfin at his door …

Our boy Glorfindel is no. 1! He came back from death and was even more powerful, and wise and angelic.
You need up the volume and maybe work on the clarity of the voice recording. It's little low and muffled in the video
