    My Traeger has swings that wide under some circumstances. I'd say it is a PID controller, but maybe not the very best PID controller - what can you expect for $200? Yeah, a non-PID would be very volatile. Thanks for your doing this. BTW, how many BBQ grills/smokers do you have?

  • @ralphb4012
    @ralphb4012 3 года назад +1

    Thanks Tom! Looked great. I'm a bit concerned about the temperature . Maybe an external remp probe at grate level would be a better indicator of the control? Built in probe location might be the issue? Hope you do another cook. I also like what you did with the foil for the grease run off. Was the foil ok at the spot where you covered the sear piece?

    • @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
      @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ  3 года назад

      Thanks again for Watching and commenting Ralph! In the biscuit test I did 2 temp pucks at grate level, I also plan to add the temp gauges to the lid. The foil performed fine over the holes. Good questions!

    • @ralphb4012
      @ralphb4012 3 года назад +1

      Thanks Tom. I was thinking digital temperature probes to confirm how much the temperature jumps around. The pucks are slower to react to temperature variations than the digital probes. I'm glad to see no foil damage. Can't wait for the next cook. For now you have me in the mood for tenderloin. Firing up my grill today.

    • @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ

    Could you alternately put a water pan below the meat to keep it moist and to catch drips, or would that not work?

    You have to click it to set ... then hold it for 5 seconds to program the temp you want to maintain. Then it shouldn't jump around a lot.

  • @ChefJimmyJ

    The pork looks good. Not that it matters a whole lot with Tenderloin, but I noticed the way you rolled it, you would be slicing WITH the Grain. You would get a more manageable roll and an even more tender bite rolling from the side. This makes a longer rather than thicker roast, and you would be slicing Against the meats Grain. Just an observation...JJ

      @@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ I'm used to an acorn grill. I've had it for 8 years and it's starting to rust out on the bottom. They have a new grill called the flavor pro which is gas but you can also add wood charcoal or pellets to the flavor drawer. I was leading maybe towards that one sounded interesting.

    What does pid mean ?

    • @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
      @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for Watching Michael! “Proportional, integral and derivative control “. For a pellet grill it means that it takes readings from the temp probe inside the grill and gives that information to the controller to adjust the pellet feed to control the temp. Controllers without PID use a timed cycle for each temp setting and will have larger temp swings from set point
