      He was undoubtedly one in a generation and a great favourite amongst fans. His 1978 return to the Isle of Man has to be the greatest comeback ever. Cheers for watching :)

      haha, you're worse than me, I was looking at how long the rear wheel span after the engine stopped about 3 minutes in and was wondering if the bearings were oiled rather than greased :)

      1978, the greatest comeback EVER. and just to prove it was no fluke, did it again in 1979. A proper champion eh

      I was there in 79, I read somewhere that he did not continue because he began to realise the risk factor which is a sombre irony considering he died in a road accident.
      He had true empathy though as after his win in the 1967 senior TT when Ago's chain broke and walked away in tears he gave him his girlfriend to try to make him happy.

    I'm wondering what oil their using in the engine these days? I recall them using Castrol R 30w back in the day which was also used in the CR-93 125 production racer. Seems like a modern synthetic would be the best choice for overall saving of the innards and best storage qualities.

    • @DukeDyson
      @DukeDyson 8 лет назад +1

      I'm pretty sure Castrol R is still available and judging by the glorious unmistakeable smell they were definitely using it

    • @whalesong999
      @whalesong999 8 лет назад +1

      Oh, yes, I hear that ..! It was the oil of choice for so many years, also in our Bultaco two-strokes with a little shot of acetone to make it blend with gasoline.

      Honda were pretty cutting edge when they first appeared and by the time Mike Hailwood was bringing them TT victories Honda were already the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. Soichiro Honda was quite a visionary and a brilliant engineer, he did indeed make motorcycles that sound awesome :) Thanks for watching

    Has anyone asked, Why that lil beauty and other Hailwood bikes are not in the Honda Museum in Japan? I was told it is because, Hailwood used Hailwood frames and not Honda. Since Hailwood's bikes are not 100% Honda...................

    • @DukeDyson
      @DukeDyson 8 лет назад +2

      I've not heard that but in 1961 Honda was still a fledgling racing team so could quite likely have allowed and appreciated race set up etc from an experienced racer like Mike Hailwood. He had access to a lot of decent facilities too. By the 1980s Honda were quite controlling and "home" set ups by the likes of Joey Dunlop had become the exception. Cheers for watching :)

      RJ Classics Mike was a brilliant rider but I understand his mechanical ability was not too great. once he was asked what sort of tyres he'd used in one of the TT's he'd ridden, Mike replied 'They're round and black!' A truly great character as well as the best rider in the World.

      Ayup chap. The 1961 RC162 was the parallel 4, Honda didn't introduce the parallel 6 'til 1964. It's difficult to distinguish between fully faired bikes eh. Cheers for watching

    • @xvdd1
      @xvdd1 6 лет назад +1

      George Beale has replicated the Honda 6 although I believe it is a 297 essentially he had access to an original and back engineered it I would imagine these replicas go for a pretty penny.
