The people who are saying she can't dance should listen to what she said before her dance. Her Siva is an interpretation of the movement of the manumea. The Manumea is a bird indigenous only to Samoa. MJ is one of the best Samoan dancers around. This dance here is pure genius. It screams sexiness, oh so graceful, beauty, creativity, bravery, everything that encompasses our siva Samoa. Well done Mary Jane.
Watched this over 20 years ago and by far the best siva samoa ive ever seen, i will never forget it and no one will ever replace such a unique performance well done Mary-Jane
heheh all our Miss Samoa/South pacific, are beautiful Her daughter now in 2023-2024 has won what mum won with her own talent.. Please love our girls, they are representing us, and how uniguq our island is.
I still remember watching her dance, from the crowd outside the Memorial hall in Tonga. I was only 5 years old then. I couldn’t be more proud to be half Tongan half Samoan 🇼🇸🇹🇴 Malo lava Maryjane
Oh this young woman absolutely nailed her interpretation of the song and fuse it in with basic Samoan maiden/Taupou movements. She appropriately taps into the gracefulness of the se'e and sheer soft movements of the wrists/hands whole at the same time allowing us to see the "bird", not only in the song, but the bird she advocates for preservation. What a well thought out interpretative choreography while not compromising the Samoan beauty of the Taupou dance. If this was just a Taupou dance for a Taualuga then it would not work as much due to certain leg movements but because she's dancing for a cause, she is allowed freedoms that come with interpretation in a presentation. Manaia tele sa'asa'aga a se tasi o tama fanau o o tatou alo ma suli o si o tatou atunu'u pele. A
I remember watching her perform this at the pageant when I was a kid. It still is one of the best samoan siva I have seen even to this day. Shot Mary Jane xx
OMG, i watched this when i was a little girl when VCR's were around LOL i pressed the rewind button so many times when i was little.....til it magically disappeared when my aunty from samoa came to visit LOL thanks for posting this! brings back memories of me and my mom just hanging out watching videos on a friday night and me asking my mom to make me the taupo for my church's family night and FAILED ahahahah #JUSTbeautiful..
Wow loved it from the beginning to the end. Great job Mary Jane. Did it perfectly. And to those who is laughing at how she did the dance, mate you obviously don't know how to siva samoa. You were only born yesterday.
Oh I remember when Ms Mary Jane did this at the pageant that night... She was the winning talent for me that night. She was authentic, graceful, poised, confident, and just downright lovely... Yeah, she rightfully won the Miss South Pacific title. She defintely is one of the most memorable, authentic, talented and beautiful Miss South Pacific we've had...
Been hoping for a long time for someone to upload Miss Jane Mckibbin's talent. We wanted to watch it again after watching the actual pageant that year. A lot of people up in the Seattle area were complimenting her dance. Very talented and gorgeous!!!
damn this particular siva had a profound effect on ASB polyfest performances. You see all these Taualuga in the early to mid 2000s performances try to emulate this style for a number of years
This piece was choreograph by the guy that came up with Manamea Apelu's talent for miss Samoa as well. He worked together with Mary Jane to create this siva... so its both of them. He and others started the first contemporary dance group back in Samoa in the early 90s combining pacific dance with world Music.. MJ joint mid 90s with Allen Alo another famous choreographer. The group was call tapou o tane and i use to watch them preform alot. The guy's name is Peter Tamasese
So wish the video was in sync with the audio, because it's off. The beats that MJ hits with her kaagas makes the siva even more effective tbh. Watching this back in 97/98 was incredible, it was so fresh and new in interpretation of the siva Samoa at the time.
And actually none of these moves are interpretive...these are all Taualuga moves that have not been used for a long time and have gone out of style. But her dance is very authentic.
The actions made me emotional. Although Im not Samoan, the depiction of the movements of the Manumea acquire a significant meaning, due to the fact the burd hadnt been seen for a while, leading to the belief that it had gone into extinction. The siva really has a significance in Samoa's conservation.
Beautifully done!!! Its obvious that she CAN dance. Her movements are more emphasized or dramatized to the moves of the bird that she's dancing about. That is sheer talent. Its like doing interpretive dancing. I guess you have to really be artistic in order for u to comprehend. Its not that Miss Jane don't know how to siva samoa, she's obviously a very talented dancer. You're beautiful Jane!
Her siva was beautiful! Those saying she cant dance really need to learn the roots of our heritage. A ua le iloa lou aganuu, aua ke pisa fua i le siva a isi. E lagi a lou faasamoa ae oo loa i mea aganuu ua le iloa se kae moa lmao. Malolo ia le kou fia fai misa. :)
Its weird to our new generation eyes but thats exactly how it's supposed to be!! The movement supposed to tell the story of every detail of the song 🎵...I'm Hella impressed and very proud that she passed it down to her daughters...😊😊😊
Love it, although I hated her in "Sione's Wedding" she is probably one of the best Samoan dancers out there. I just loved that she made it look unchoreographed, loved the costume, she smiled throughout, perfectly, amazingly, beautifully, wonderfully and awesomely done!
Im glad she didn't listen to the women who said she isn't Samoan enough to be in the pageant and that it was controversial for an Australian Samoan contestant to be in the running for Miss Samoa. She spoke on this and the pageant organisers said it's ok if she wants to drop out. Well no, she said they don't know her or her aiga or grandparents, she is Samoan and look. Absolutely stunning
This is so cool considering she’s from the same village as my dad! My mum also said she was in the crowd as a little kid. She dances so beautifully and elegantly, wish I could’ve seen it for my self
This is how the siva samoa became the dance that the samoan women and girls do today also known as the evolution of the samoan siva!! Its not that she cant dance or do the siva samoa shes showing the hisstroy of our samoan siva.
Gunners, you need help. Why don't you enter the pageant yourself or upload a video of you doing a Siva so we can see if you can walk the talk? Lol. Amazing as always MJ
I wanna know who taught her to sa'asa'a... she never mentioned who taught her, I mean, since you're afakasi, #no offence #I am too, there's no way you can just magically come up with such a knowledge in Samoan dancing and be that confident to share a rather different viewpoint, am I right?
I too am afakasi and I teach Samoan dances here in the Seattle area to local middle and high schools and I surprise people with the choreography that I use in translation to the music. If you have the passion and desire to understand all there is to learn and understand the culture, you can do just as marvelous a job as she did. This is amazing and I'm proud of her but you're right. I'm sure someone had helped her "tweek" it a bit to be as magical as it is. There are times I turn to my elders to translate some of the Samoan vocabulary that hardly has an English translation.
Same guy that came up with Manamea Apelu's talent for miss Samoa. He worked together with Mary Jane to create this siva... so its both of them. I will never forget this performance by Mary Jane... Also we should never compare people when it comes to who was better.. They are all beautiful
OMG, i watched this when i was a little girl when VCR's were around LOL i pressed the rewind button so many times when i was little.....til it magically disappeared when my aunty from samoa came to visit LOL thanks for posting this! brings back memories of me and my mom just hanging out watching videos on a friday night and me asking my mom to make me the taupo for my church's family night and FAILED ahahahah

Pity Samoa wasn't competing in Miss World at the time... Maryjane would've been a top contender for sure.
Agree

Go to her facebook and ask her....
