Manchester City is one of the strongest clubs in Europe Haaland didn't make a difference in this season, anyone in place of Haaland would have had good stats. Haaland began and continued the season with a bang but ended it with a low. After all the terrifying scoring, when defences figured him out and became watertight against him he became powerless and scored just a solitary (01) goal in his last 8 games of the season. Messi in the face of such blockades would almost always be able to find a way to break through and make a goal contribution. In addition to his impressive goal record for PSG, I could argue that he won Ligue 1 for them, considering all his assists and also his goal that earned a draw that led to them clinching the trophy. On the other hand, Haaland disappeared from the most crucial games of the season: the two semi-final matches and the finals of the UCL as well as the FA Cup finals. Messi and PSG may have performed dismally in the UCL but at least they participated and reached the round of 16. Compare that with Haaland being completely absent and inexistent from the greatest of competitions (the World Cup), moreover one where Messi was a beast! Messi also boasts a good record in his 7 UCL matches played. Haaland doesn't create anything special and only managed to achieve what he achieved thanks to a very good team and a prolific coach surrounding him. Messi has much greater impact on his teams and is capable of carrying them, but the same cannot be said of Haaland, who is dominantly a goalscorer whereas Messi is much more. Apart from goals - all Haaland's achievements are tied exclusively to goals - Messi outclasses Haaland in almost all other performance aspects and details. The age factor vis-a-vis performance also lends more credit to Messi. No disrespect to Haaland; he's prolific in every sense of the word, I'm so proud of him and wish him the very best in his career as he's still very young and has much to achieve ahead of him. There's no way anyone in his right senses would overlook his uncommon goal record and accompanying accolades as well as team trophies in 2022/2023. But I reckon that the same reason Cristiano Ronaldo could never ever compare to Messi is the same reason Haaland could never compare to Messi or trump him in this year's Ballon d'Or (taking into account this season's performances, though). A complete goalscorer can't match a complete footballer. At best, Haaland should come in second place, very close like Van Djik and take home the best striker award like Lewandowski.
it's all logical and understandable but one thing i'd consider as a voter is that Haaland couldn't partecipate in WorldCup, but that is a consequence of his value as a player, but just becuase he was born Norvegian. If Haaland had been born maybe brazilian/English/portugese we don't how how things would have changed at National level. So when considering who deserves it more between them you should factor the possibility that maybe Messi shined that much because Haaland wasn't present. If haaland played for a big National team there's a good chance that he would have gotten the World Cup golden ball.

Messi deserves this award than every single player on this would.
Haaland ghosted in important games this season. He didn't show up in the semifinals against Madrid, he didn't show up in the FA cup which led to a treble. (if Gundogan doesn't score those two goals out of thin air we wouldn't be having a conversation about a treble winning side), and he had a horrible game in the final against Inter. He is the only pure strike in that team, to go missing for those important games is not acceptable. Goals doesn't equal a Ballond'or and that is why they have the golden boot as well. Messi was the most important key player in that team and was almost dragging them through every round with playmaking, assists and goals.

I think people fail to realise that even without the world cup Messi is the one with the 4th highest goal contributions in the UCL this season . He has been phenomenal in the league too althou PSG overll as a team have been just embarrassing.

Big difference is Argentina won the WC because of Messi. A lot of PSG plays came together due to Messi's involvement. Man City won the treble because of Pep. Haaland got a lot of his goals on games that they were already up or against lower tier teams. Yes, Haaland accomplished a lot with his goal record. The Ballon d'or, though, is for the best player. Now out of these two, who has the most impact on their team/s? Argentina would've been nothing without Messi. Man City would've done all that without Haaland. If you put all their stats down, looks like Haaland should just be given the Golden Boot....and that's it. He didn't contribute to anything else worth noting. People keep saying HE won the treble. He won the award because his coach and team got him there, but he didn't really contribute like he's given credit for, and I love Haaland. This year just isn't his.
