Here is what I did because I'm poorer than option 3 and it worked ok.
I took a sponge and applied some bubbles and water to the sponge until it was mostly water left on the sponge. I then gently scrubbed the sheep skin until it seemed "better". I then wiped the sheep skin throughly with an old shirt. There was a bunch of soot on it from adventures. That was it. Also, I cleaned a sheep fur hat, not a rug. This process worked well in the motel I'm at. Now my hats ready for winter and I won't look like oliver twist.

Thanks! Very informative...But. what about the final stages - dying and grooming? Do you leave it on the floor to dry, or hang it? How do you groom it? With the pet brush or what?

You are absolutely brilliant. I had a sheepskin rug once... I put it in the bathtub and gave it a bath as if it were still a sheep. Bad way to clean. Good way to ruin.

For every 1 liter of water
50milliliters of isopropyl alcohol
2 teaspoons of dishwash

Dry shampoo is basically just a spray powder, formulated to take in oil to make hair look less greasy
