I'm also a Puerto Rican whose parents are from Puerto Rico and I grew up in New York speaking English while my parents spoke Spanish to me. I completely understand Spanish but now I want to learn to speak Spanish fluently. I love your video "How to Learn Spanish with Netflix". Although you recommendation is time consuming, it's worth the effort. I'm following your instructions and I'm learning lots of vocabulary while entertaining myself. I had a Colombian-American wife at the time that I lived in an apartment house in NYC. The building superintendent lived with his family in the same building, they were Puerto Ricans. One day he told my wife that he couldn't understand why his daughters were failing their Spanish classes in school. She very gently told him that the kids, as they were growing up, where experiencing Spanglish, not Spanish.
I recommend the show Morocco: Love in Times of War. It's a show from Spain with 12 episodes currently with another season soon I believe. The show is about Spanish nurses during the Rif War in the 1920s. The show is intense but also has love stories and turns of events. It is Spain Spanish.
If you live in the US or Canada it would be better to learn Latin American Spanish

I’m a Spanish speaker and my advice to those want to learn Spanish is to make sure they understand that Spanish from Spain and Spanish from Latin America it’s a little different but that small difference can make a big difference. Spanish from Latin America is a lot easier to understand and a lot more people
Speak it. Spaniels have a way to say certain words that are hard to understand. Focus on shows that are originally spoken in Spanish from Mexico or other Latin country.
@@Noetic_Nik yea, It would specify European Spanish . If its just Latin American Spanish it would say Spanish. I have to disagree with Ana’s statement. Learn whichever form of Spanish is relevant to your region. Castilian/European Spanish is the same Spanish spoken in Spain and that is the Spanish taught outside of the Americas. So if you go to the UK, France, etc that is the Spanish you will here. Latin American Spanish is relevant to the Americas and the Carribean. Both forms of Spanish would be understood. Just watch out for slang in different parts of the world. The only hard thing about Castilian Spanish is the “th” sound that phonetically sounds like the th you would hear in the word think. So Cinco would be pronounced “thinko” Lopez would be pronounced Lopeth. But otherwise either one would be understood.
Latin American spanish is crap, Its basically a "ghetto" and uncordinated way of speaking spanish learn from the original creators.

@@colemerchant8926 No, learn the dialect that's relevant to you. Learning Castillian Spanish if you live in the Americas is pointless to a beginner as it's not the dialect spoken there and will only cause a new learner more confusion. Even within the Americas there are several distinct dialects. For most of the USA, Latin is the most relevant by far.
Some would make your same argument about English and say to learn the England - English. But again, learn what's relevant to you. Unless you're planning a trip to the UK, learning that accent and vocabulary isn't useful to you as a beginner.

Yes! This has been so useful to me. My Spanish is a high level now but everyday I watch an episode of a show, every day I learn at least one new word that I didn't know, my vocab has improved so much in just a few months from taking just half an hour a day to watch an episode. I find you are exposed to unusual, not very common words so much by using this method.
I appreciate the positive spin on the subs not matching the dubs. I'll try to be more open about that. For those who don't know, Closed Captions (or CC) is the tag to watch out for if you want direct transcription of the audio. 'Subtitles' are more flexible and not necessarily word-for-word.
I'm not learning Spanish but thank you so much because you helped me find a whole bunch of new tools I can use for language learning. Not just the one you introduced but others too that I may not have found without first being introduced to that one.
I learned English using this method! After two months I didn't have to pause the video at all. It's very good way of learning new language. Worked perfectly for me. Buena suerte!

I recommend watching Malcolm in the middle in Latin Spanish, it's a hilarious show and it's in the heart of a lot of Latin Americans, specially Mexicans. Also the Simpsons and pirates of the caribean.

Simpsons. 😂!! I know very little spanish. But I know so much of the dialogue and how the character speak so when I visit mexico. I absolutely love watching the simpsons in spanish. And its even funnier with the spanish voice over actors.. Hahaha.

I have been doing this before I've seen the video, and I can confirm that doing an episode in one sitting is too much. 5 to 10 minutes is perfect. As for recommendations, my absolute favorite is Desenfrenadas!

I recommend doing a little comprehensible input followed by a lot of incomprehensible input - meaning no subtitles or script just active listening. This process might be slower but it’s less boring and certain things start to stick better when you heard them. When you’re using incomprehensible input try to guess the topic of what they’re based on the context of their actions and facial expressions. Vocabulary build can be slow, but if there’s a word that stands out to you, search it and practice using it in a sentence. Stick with this along with reading and speaking and you’ll see major improvements.
This same method is good with reading newspapers in a foreign language. When reading a foreign language newspaper, sometimes I use a dictionary or google translate (or read with tutor), but sometimes I just keep reading whether I understand each word or phrase or not. Hell, I will could go on for pages reading incomprehensible paragraphs. Then I give it a rest an read those same pages two or three days later and a weird thing happens....I understand it!!! I have taught myself French, Arabic and Turkish this way.

My grandfather came from Switzerland after WW2 knowing no English, he learned mostly by listening to the radio and picking things up slowly.
This is so tactical and practical. I’ve watched all sorts of Spanish shows from Narcos to Wild District to Jaguar and caught a few phrases without reading the subtitles, but this is another level. Especially the tip about watching something that’s a favorite, but dubbing in Spanish. Awesome and useful video.
I appreciate this advice. I am currently trying to learn Spanish , and honestly it has been a little difficult here and there. So finding ways I can actively incorporate Spanish into my life through what I am already absorbing (entertainment), has been a really helpful tip. So thank you :)
Im also trying to improve my Spanish, and I have started listening to Spanish radio stations as well as using google translation app, to figure out how to pronounce a word. The best part about using google translate, is that I can take a pic of a street sign snd it will convert to English or to Spanish. This has been great in helping people I’ve met who spoke little English, but with whom I couldn’t help past a certain point because of my limited Spanish ability. Cheers and good luck!

Thanks for all this information on learning Spanish with Netflix. Even though I took Spanish in high school long ago, The thing i find hard getting back and used to in the language is the reversal of nouns vs the verbs/adjectives between English and Spanish in sentences. In English we majority of the time say the adjectives first before the Noun, Spanish seems to be just reverse most of the time. Example: "I live in a very large house" Spanish: "Vivo en la casa muy Grande" Hard to get used to that thinking process being English speaking all my life. Anyway, thanks for your video.
"I live in *a* very large house" = "Vivo en *una* casa muy grande" ; "Vivo en *la* casa muy Grande" = "I live in *the* very large house" (which sounds a little bit odd to me in both languages, mostly in Spanish ). Keep going, practice makes perfect, it's only a matter of time. It took me only 18 years to get the hang of English, although most of the "learning" came in the form of wasting most if not all my afternoons in my teenage years on RUclips and watching TV shows in English. Think at least 6 if not 8 or more hours a day for 5 or so years.
Yea there’s a few tricky aspects to Spanish. The thing I find the most confusing is how there’s several words that have multiple yet completely different meanings. Like for example el means the and it also means he. And porque can mean because or it can mean why? So that’s odd. Also having to change up the gender vowels when speaking to either a man or a woman can also be kinda weird.
@@cooliodiablo4571 Interesting I hadn't notice that "el" can mean both "the" and "he".
Once you get used to words having a sex you don't really notice it, but I can see why it feels weird coming from a language that doesn't have that feature.
And by the way, "porque" = "because" and "por que" = "why", but to be honest, many native Spanish speakers don't use them correctly. Also, there is a difference between «Porqué» / «porque» / «por qué» / «por que» you cal look it up on the RAE website.

Lol I thought I was the only one using kids content sometimes to learn but it helps especially when there are songs. I mean of you've seen Dora a few times, 'azul' and 'azúcar' kinda sticks with you lol. Also narcos 🤷🏾♀️

Facts, the international shows are amazing. HBO Max has some good ones too.

Can you use this only on your computer, or can you also use it on your TV?
It's also good to watch shows youve already watched on Spanish TV channels. Walking Dead & Sons of Anarchy are 2 examples. They'll have the dubbed over but if you know the plot & what's been said, it's easier to understand.

Is there any place I can watch ANYTHING with Spanish audio and have the subtitles match in spanish? They never say the same thing. I need the subtitles to match the audio to understand what they are saying. It would really help with my listening. Even with this app, they arent matching.

The subtitles are different at times because they abbreviate the dialogue a bit to make it easier to read quickly.

i used to watch your ilovebasketballtv videos a while back. i love that you’re doing something different and helping people in another way, but what happened with basketball, you still play?
This is similar to learning spanish songs. I've picked up quiet a few phrases buy learning a song with the translation next to it. I sometimes learn the word before i memorize the meaning, but then I always go back and it's easier to link the word to the meaning. It feels a little more organic than traditional studying english to spanish.
Exactly, I love music for learning. Although I think dialogue is a little better because musicians often change sentence structure to make words rhyme. But still music is excellent for learning new words and pronunciation.
Could you recommend some songs please especially those not too fast
@@mumsss8731 well I my best advice is listening to music from people like bad bunny, Romeo santos, and aunel AA cause the music sounds best to me but it depends on you if you like it
