@@soimulpacii9618 World’s most popular waltz composed by a Serb You know this waltz. It’s not the Blue Danube but it’s called Waves on the Danube and is quite probably more recognisable than Strauss’ gem. "The composer is Ion Ivanovici, the Romanian form of Jovan Ivanović - an ethnic Serb from the Banat region who was born in Timişoara, at the time in the Austrian Empire. TK Magazine recounts this story from famed tamburica player Vasa Jovanović. His ensemble was performing at Cafe Delphi in Galați, Romania over ten evenings, each to elegant audiences. There was one gentleman in particular who was a regular, whose interest was particularly piqued when the Serbian tamburica was played. One evening, during the interval, people started to approach this gentleman to congratulate him on something. The members of the ensemble heard his name mentioned “Ivanovici” and concluded he was the famous composer. With that, they played his famous composition Waves on the Danube. After the performance, Ivanović approached each of the musicians and shook hands with them. Vasa also recalls that Ivanović offered to open up a musical school back in Serbia to teach what he knew for the advancement of the nation. However, King Milan Obrenović is said to have rejected the offer saying there was no budget for music, the army needed to be equipped. Perhaps that was an early omen for the relationship between the motherland and Serbs in the Diaspora?"
