Tearing down the former headquarter of the german postal service - "the pyramid". Built in the 70's the impressive 11 story building was closed in 2011 due to fire protection issues. A renovation would have been too expensive and the decision was made to replace the building with new residential houses. A giant crawler crane with wrecking ball starting at the top of the building, supported by a high reach demolition excavator.

die Vorbereitungen haben ungefähr ein halbes Jahr gedauert, der Einsatz der Kugel ca. 9 Wochen

Why wrecking ball demolition??? Blasting would have been much more economical in terms of overall cost of demolition. Answers anyone??

I think to blast that heavy old contrete building (especially the three separate elevator towers in the middle) you would have needed so many explosives that the residentual buildings behind, and even more the glas-front office buildings on the other side would have been affected.
