@@ReaverTheSurvivalist it was the most horrific humbling of Guts strength there was. all of that power and might that he used to crush human armies, and these monsters pin him down with ease and force him to watch as he can't save his friends and loved ones.
This song literally IS the Eclipse to me. It captures all the dread, terror, hopelessness, chaos, sadness, confusion and horror with this perfect feeling of otherworldly evil. Hirasawa's score for the 97 series is absolute genius, it captures the feel of Berserk so perfectly it all its tracks. Nobody but Hirasawa can so perfectly capture the feeling for Berserk musically.
I just have this mental image of instead of some character saying that with determination and love for their friends, Griffith says “with the power of friendship” smoothly and has a Emperor Palpatine smile on his face
@@cowgomoo444 i think that they could have been a little more...contained with that part. I mean a dogman raping a girl while he has her brother's head stuck on his sword is very metal but i think it was also very edgy.
@@leobardoestrada3202 Yeah, they have come a long way and share many great times, but I still think Guts used to be the happiest when he was with the Band of the Hawk or the calmest when he was just reflecting on his own life back at Godoh and Erica's house. Don't get me wrong, he IS happy with his new friends, but there's the weight of the tragic past souring things a bit. :(
bob bob I was creeped out by the last two episodes, but seeing them redone in Golden Arc III full on disturbed me, simply because the higher production value allowed more of the fucked-up-tivity to be clearer
The Eclipse, to me, is the second most terrifying scene in anime ever. Watching all the characters I knew and love be relentlessly butchered and devoured... the horrifying screams as they struggle not to be eaten... people reduced to madness in their last moments... Pippin... Corkus... Judeau... Gaston... they deserved better!
I love the build up of this song. Starts slowly, almost peacefully, but around 0:26 sound "grows" evil with each second. Since 1:35 it becomes more and more chaotic just to change into pure madness at 4:30. It's amazing depiction of The Eclipse. Susumu Hirasawa music on 1997 "Berserk" TV Show is simply perfection and captures soul of Miura's creation. I must say it was destiny, so the talents of those two could fit, blend and unite with each other. I can't imagine "Berserk" without Hirasawa's craftsmanship and I can't stop thinking about Berserk when I hear his music.
@@jpphilosopher True that. I also really appreciated Shiro Sagisu work on 3 Berserk Golden Age movies. He is also great composer, Blood and Guts, Guitars 1135, Hundred Years War, Dragon Slayer and My Brother - all awesome tracks. For me the perfect adaptation of Berserk should be made by Madhause or David's Production with Susumu Hirasawa's character themes and Sagisu's battle/action themes. We can only dream about it :/
I don't know a lot about music, but one thing I love about Susumu Hirasawa's work, especially in the darker songs of the Berserk soundtrack, is that feeling of some squirming, creeping evil lurking underneath. It's really evident in this track "Murder", where you can just feel the evil and doom stirring, bubbling beneath, and then it comes at you in full force, and all hope there was before is lost. This song captures the soul of the eclipse perfectly.
What clicks about Susumu's music more than most that I could say is that they are a pure emotional experience. His songs take the listener to a trace-like state of being, as you feel the emotions of the given song convayed directly to your brain through the most optiomal medium available; Music. When you listen to this song, it does more than just audiably describe what is going on. It's a panicy, heavy song that embodies the frantic and frightening feeling of it's namesake "Murder," the chanting that closes us off especially effective at landing us at the decline of sanity as you take relief in madness, humanity slipping from your reach. It works deeper than just contextually, applicable to any state of high stress and aggression. A more universal language that speaks to a human on an almost primal level. Hirasawa's music isn't just some catchy beats or made to fill a situation. They take you to an out-of-body experience as you get emotionally stimulated. Every time best anime composers are brought up and everybody's raising their fists for Yoko Kanno or Joe Hisaishi, I'll always make a stand for Susumu Hirasawa.
Listen to this while reading the manga. Best manga ever, actually the only one I read. I just binged off that thing and re read it all over again from time to time.
I can’t do that with BERSERK because 350+ chapters. That’s too many, especially when new stuff is waiting to be read. MADE IN ABYSS, DUNGEON MESHI, REINCARNATED AS A SWORD, KUMA KUMA KUMA BEAR, and BARTKIRA.

+jorosco23 definitely. it has a slow start but when you get to the chimera ant arc the character development and the epicness are just over the fucking top
This moment in berserk was the most tragic, Griffith sacrificing his entire group who had followed him like family for years, to become a demonic king. They were slaughtered and eaten by demons while he felt nothing. and like Guts said in the manga, it came without warning, without hesitation, without mercy. They all died following Grifith. and everything before this event was completely different thats why its such a drastic and shocking turning point in Berserk. It literally came in an instant after all those adventures and build up.
Its not just that... Its that Band of the Hawk got betrayed by the kingdom they served loyally because of Griffiths mistake and were on the run for years trying to save him only to be betrayed by him as well and this time die for him. @@jornvl6327 That manga is my favorite of all the ones I’ve read but the way that the 1997 anime did the eclipse I feel like was better than the manga. Considering that they couldn’t go further based on what was finished at the time it was perfectly done. But the feelings the anime portrayed and the mixture with the music was so terribly perfect in a way that has stuck with me long after. Much longer than the manga. I even found this song before I had read or watched Berserk looking for a long battle song in a campaign I made. This being a scenario that endless monsters would come as the party would be trapped in a cursed land on a seal that called monsters to them. This song would play as the party would either fight their way out of a almost or completely unwinnable situation or die horribly and the campaign would end. I had no idea how perfect this music was for what I made until I watched the show to find out. Don’t get me wrong, the manga is the best but this show is one of the best of all time as well. This for how it so smoothly and perfectly showed the world of Berserk and for how it showcased the most horrific and evil moment in all of fiction

Those of you who complain about not liking the new characters & chapters, and who doubt Miura's devotion to Berserk & his grand design can go suck a behelit. Miura has been working on Berserk since 1988. None of us could ever fathom the extent to which Berserk is his life. Miura has never taken the easy route & caved in to cliche, instead he has continued to surprise us at every turn, and every small detail has paid off ten fold. I can understand being disappointed at the slow release of chapters (it kills me too) but for the love of corkus show the man some goddamn support
***** I got into the series in about 2004. It's literally a decade later, and I'm happy. Guts has new friends. Farnese came to grips with being a sexual deviant. Serpico is alright with following for real, rather than being a figurehead, like his half-sister. Schierke is totally adorable, and I hope she gets Serpico in the end. Isidoro has learnt temperance, thanks to his Merrow girlfriend. All these stories are yet to finish, but... Rickert slapped the fuck out of Griffith and walked away. I think Miura has said what he needs to say. All that's left is to watch the blood and guts. GUTS,
There was actualy an article I read that Miura started getting bored with his series. I can't put up the source but you are free to do a search. Unfortuantley that may be the case. Im a fan, too.
Believe it or not, Berserk (the 1997 series), was the series that introduced me to the world of adult animation. I was 12 years old at the time. Before then i had no idea that a cartoon could be so violent. But after i saw the eclipse, Pippin, Judeau, Corkus and Gaston and the rest of the Band of the Hawk being slaughtered like animals, Casca being raped by Griffith, and Guts losing his arm and eye, it terrified me so much, i coudn't sleep well for 3 days straight.
Possibly the best song from the anime, it really feels like gates of hell itself have opened and demons are crawling out of it, leaving death and misery in their wake.
Griffith has been building his dream on the foundation of dead comrades and enemies. But his followers did that willingly. They knew what the stakes were. But during the eclipse Griffith betrayed them and denied their humanity when he chose to sacrifice them to the heart of evil without their consent. This was the moment when he became the demon king, a villain that couldn't be redeemed.
its gut's fault for leaving them behind and Griffith underwent the most horrific torture imaginable can you blame him for using the stone you probably don't know what it's like to be severely disabled I have muscular dystrophy and bed-bound I can relate with Griffith 100%
@@coreydeluna5258 Griffith was always meant to become a Godhand, which means the Band of the Hawk was ALWAYS going to be sacrificed no matter what. Fuck off, this is certainly not Guts' fault
The part where the “holy” singing girl starts is amazing to me.. you don’t know hat she’s singing but it’s kinda like it’s not really meant to be there. Like how your in one place but barely sense something else there.. it tries desperately to make itself known to you but your engulfed in something and somewhere else. Whole soundtrack to 97 tho is a masterpiece.
Oh maaan... watching the original anime again and it's gives such a sad feeling, when Guts looks down at the rest of the Band of the Hawk when staying on Godhand pillar. Then this song starts playing and the feels omg. Monsters swarming at everyone. No way out from the massacre ;(...
The best part is that you knew all along it was coming. The '97 anime even spoiled deliberately in Episode 1 that Griffith would be the bad guy. Yet despite all of that, no one could have imagined this happening.
Wollyhop Yeah, but nobody expected THAT to happen. It was too much, no sane mind could have gone there. I'm sure most people imagined something more grounded and less brutal.
@@StikiFing4z Saw description of Guts maybe in the manga itself or poss the videogame but it used the words "inhuman tenacity" and thats very very accurate.
+Angelo Marval I think that's the point. He has to be in order to fight vs all the monsters as a normal human. But even when he is badass, he's not invincible and needs help from others, like Puck for example.
victor enciso My point is, mate. That he becomes something WORSE than demons themselves at times. He seems more monstrous than those malformed beings. I kinda like that about Berserk. It's not one sided.
Everyone talks about the eclipse and i agree that it is a fitting theme for it but i also remember this theme very well from the battle for doldrey. It was played towards the end of the episode (1997 anime) when griffith and the band of the hawk lured the enemy away from the castle. With their back towards the wall and the enemy closing in this theme was playing, truly fitting for such a moment.. all or nothing.
Dark hopeless, terrifying... Yet at the same time it really depicts this unending, extremely human yet defiant malice and wrath guts starts to grow inside him as he is betrayed by his most dear friend. For some reason this song makes me want to work out and get stronger not depressed. Pure adrenaline.
Such EPICNESS both the anime and the Manga are true works of art. When I first read the manga back in in 2001 it completely changed my perspective on Japanese Comics. The level of adult themes and thought provoking ideas in Berserk are just pure WIN!
I couldn't agree more.. I don't understand why people have to be so hard on the anime. I know some things could have been done better, some songs, the opening intro, etc, could have been far better, but when shit got dark... This anime I feel like it delivered the most impressive dark themes of the story. I haven't watched the movie yet, but part of the reason is that the movie adopts an art design that I don't feel fits the mood of the story. 3D CGI doesn't inspire as great fear and tension as much as 2D paint images and 2D effects can, especially even more so on a gothic, medieval setting.
A true testament to the power of electronic music in capable hands. The last genre that comes to mind when thinking on the soundtrack for a dark, grim, medieval dark fantasy epic, is sequencer electronica, closer to krautrock than IDM. And yet, Susumu Hirasawa's genius makes it not only appropriate, but pretty much tailor-made. Amazing.
Well said, I’ve been admiring this track as of late. Of all the scores and songs out there, this piece happened to be the one to teach me that music can tell stories and accurately convey specific emotions / tones.
I would rather suffer the consequences of Thanos’ snap than the eclipse. Seriously though, this song is so good yet so unsettling, especially when you know what it’s associated with
Griffith is at the lowest point in his life and he knows it. He then cuts himself and finds his treasured Behelit. And slowly, the afternoon sky becomes darker and bloodier, some demons pop up behind Griffith.(which I thought was the creepiest and scariest thing in the entire anime) Guts and the Band of the Hawk are on their way to get Griffith, more demons appear. The Hawks notice an eclipse about to start, about a hundred demons are now behind Griffith. Guts runs into the river and tries to rescue Griffith. As soon as he touches Griffith's shoulder, the mysterious Behelit turns into a crying, bleeding face and screams. The entire area literally turns into red skulls and large faces filled with Apostles and then God's Hand. It is officially the end of our beloved Band of the Hawk. 😢💔☹

I feel like this song works really well with Guts running away from his old mercenary band after killing Gambino. The dread at realizing his comrades want him dead, and the adrenaline of fighting his way out. The voices kick in during the last half of the song, he's stolen a horse, ran for his life, fallen from a cliffside and taken an arrow through the lung.
@@АлпамысРустембек It could have been, but I like the use of the Behelit track in that scene. It still displays the panic that Guts has. The eclipse is a complete flip from that and now gives the song so much more meaning.

Ever since hearing this track back in 99 when I was only 4 years old, it's been trapped in my mind. I vividly remember the eclipse episode and it has stuck with me since. It is is a crime the 97 series never continued it is still my favorite adaptation of Berserk. RIP Kentaro Miura. We miss you.
Since I feel bad about getting involved in the dub vs. sub bullshit here, I'm going to actually talk about the music. This track is, in my opinion, one of the best ones from Berserk if not the best purely for its effect on the mood of the story and the action. It builds perfectly to match the escalating tension and horror, and the various lines are all either haunting or frenetic, tense lines. I love it. This entire soundtrack was really great, honestly, but I'm sure anyone actually seeking this out and listening to it already knows this.
Province of Lawlz... kinda well said. this is maybe the most haunting piece of music i have ever heard from any anime/manga. down to its very name "murder" it shakes my soul. master piece 10/10 superb!~~
The God Hand is a symbol of 2 things A. The attempt to reconcile the fact that evil exists with the belief in a higher power B. That evil is the product of the free will of humanity and not a higher power (regardless of the existence of God) thus the God Hand is a failed attempt to by humanity to conceptualize and understand God (i.e., a false deity)
***** Exactly. Organized religion is usually a route to power for those who crave it. In terms of theology, I am saying that while the God Hand is a false god, that doesn't rule out the existence of a real God (the God Hand being similar to the idea of a Demiurge in Gnosticism).
***** hmm.. Organized religion is horrible indeed. I'm truly curious though.. So how is this series about organized religion and the corruption that stems from it?
The Berserk anime soundtrack spoiled me from the manga for quite a while. Then what I decided to do was to listen to the soundtrack (especially this track) while reading the manga. One of the best choices I made in my life.
No anime has ever freaked the cold-ass that I am like these last episodes did. This was the most unexpected thing i ve seen in my life and that soundtrack is just a perfection and perfectly fits the environment which is also incredible. Guys, i don’t even have the words to explain everything i mean to say
The build up to 4.30 and the change thereafter is one of the most harrowing and energised pieces of music, which describes something that is just so full of despair and chaos. Susumu is incredible at setting the scene with his music. I too would be interested to know what the woman is singing
Started reading Berserk a month ago and caught up a couple weeks ago- already re-reading it after watching the 1997 anime and the movies for the first time. I fucking LOVE this track. I listened to it for most battle scenes with Guts and didn't associate it with the Eclipse at all before as I hadn't seen the anime. Don't get me wrong, it does sound dark and hopeless, but I always found it to be a badass track as shallow as that sounds. I would start it when tension rose in the manga and I anticipated a fight, and whenever Guts swung the dragon slayer on beat with the entrance of the more intense sound at 2:50 I'd get so HYPE. Ugh. But when the vocals come in you really get that sense of fighting a long, strenuous, losing battle. A perfect track.
Great to have a new fan with us :)! I love listening to the OST while reading Berserk too and this week I started reading the manga again after couple years
The 1997 anime eclipse is the pinnacle of the Berserk series for me (manga vs anime vs ova etc) large part due to hirasawa's masterpiece , Murder. It accentuated the feeling of dread, desperation, and despair that defined the Eclipse like nothing else could. This is the climax of Berserk.
Griffith had to choose. Die Honorably or Make his dream come true. And he made his dream come true. This is what a villain is, the best kind of a villain i would say and i dont see anything wrong here. I dont recall him to be after Honor at any point of the story. The only thing he wanted was Power and Dominance and they gave him that. We still hate him, but im just saying. Honor to the musician of the series!
And yet people go babbling on saying anime characters like Frieza is more evil. Okay to some extent I can see why but really Frieza is nothing more than Joffrey only with powers. A technically pathetic coward who wanted more power cuz he was scared there would one day be somebody more powerful and he cannot bully them to death. And his sadistic nature is truly nostalgic in some of the scariest ways not to mention Linda really knew how to make his voice chilling. Really Frieza was never one to be feared. It's the fact that he can kill you in an instant. Really it's kinda like Thanos. His appearance isn't at anyway terrifying. It's how he can kill you. Griffith on the other hand, used people in such a convincing that he considered them family, everyone in the Hawk loved and respected the guy not just as a leader but as family. And for Guts to leave he descended into madness, lost everything and was tortured to skin, bones and little blood. And for Griffith to just willingly sacrifice--
--his own family-like band, become probably the most frightening demonic scourge since Black Heart and the Clown/Violator, Femto then violating Casca to mentally torture Guts, Frieza on the other hand he will torture people like he's some spoiled brat kid who has all the power in the world and he constantly complains, he's almost like a more spoiled version of Ciel or Alois from Black Butler. Now tell me people how does that make people like Frieza more evil than someone like Griffith?
DevilTrigger Exactly. The manga also shows how different people can fall in different ways. Griffith had forsaken his humanity for power and dream. Guts, on the other hand, let go of hope and embraced hatred. He devolved into his younger self but with an insatiable bloodlust. He went so far into hatred it began to manifest itself as borderline insanity (hallucinations of his own dark self as a beast) and such a great need for slaughter that even a demon questioned if Guts was even human anymore.
Remember that all the Apostles were once human. The Eclipse wasn't an event created by aliens, or demons pulled from hell, it was a result of the worst of humanity getting what they wanted.

Lx Dead Absolutely agree! Hirasawa’s music is a fundamental aspect of Berserk imo. He should always work on Berserk anytime music is involved.
We can only dream about it :/
Berserk by Madhouse? Damn, that would be a dream come true.
Was it... causality? 😉
I think that even the beginning is very eerie. Its like a pot bubbling and ready to release its evil content
I don't know a lot about music, but one thing I love about Susumu
Hirasawa's work, especially in the darker songs of the Berserk
soundtrack, is that feeling of some squirming, creeping evil lurking
underneath. It's really evident in this track "Murder", where you can
just feel the evil and doom stirring, bubbling beneath, and then it comes at you in full force, and all hope there was before is lost. This song captures the soul of the eclipse perfectly.
Well said, this song just is full of despair and evil... Fits to that part perfectly.
yes iv always wanted them to keep ALL the tracks from the original berserk its perfect
now compare to the bullshit in 2016's score.
Well said, to alluman, and Eric. Hard to believe that this is a youtube comment thread.

This moment in berserk was the most tragic, Griffith sacrificing his entire group who had followed him like family for years, to become a demonic king. They were slaughtered and eaten by demons while he felt nothing. and like Guts said in the manga, it came without warning, without hesitation, without mercy.

Wow... Now when I think about it, it would be a good idea
@@АлпамысРустембек It could have been, but I like the use of the Behelit track in that scene. It still displays the panic that Guts has. Personally, I love how there were two times before this that “Murder” was used, and both were for exciting war battles. The eclipse is a complete flip from that and now gives the song so much more meaning.
This is my audio pre-workout. Listening to this, and knowing the context, gets me more ready to pump iron and grind to the doom ost more than anything to ever exist. @@Arrow_118 Last year Travis Scott had a Astroworld Festival in Houston but it devolved into horror Idk what led up to it but the crowd got frenzied and a crowd crush/stampede happened that killed 10 people.
People have theories that it was a mass sacrifice because of weird/satanic like imagery, people in the crowd legit going hysteric, and Travis Scott basically not caring and continuing his performance.
@@rickastley4993little correction, the reason why people died is bc security completely lost control of the entrances, which lead to tons of people with no ticket being there. the festival ended up being way over-crowded, which lead to people getting stuck under the immovable stampede and dying. no satanic stuff, just horrible management

This episode freaked me out the first time I watched it.
The God Hand is a symbol of 2 things
A. The attempt to reconcile the fact that evil exists with the belief in a higher power
B. That evil is the product of the free will of humanity and not a higher power (regardless of the existence of God)
thus the God Hand is a failed attempt to by humanity to conceptualize and understand God (i.e., a false deity)
Shaleen Dalal Never blame organized religion for what people do. It's the people that use religion for selfish ends that are horrible.
The fact that the Band of the Hawk actually managed to hold out long enough to even kill a few apostles is actually impressive.

Rest in Peace your Art will be remembered.

I love listening to the OST while reading Berserk too and this week I started reading the manga again after couple years
i did the same exact shit when i read berserk for the first time
The 1997 anime eclipse is the pinnacle of the Berserk series for me (manga vs anime vs ova etc)
large part due to hirasawa's masterpiece , Murder. It accentuated the feeling of dread, desperation, and despair that defined the Eclipse like nothing else could. This is the climax of Berserk.
I like to think every dead member of the Hawks heard Rickert slap Griffith.
This is what judgement day will sound like

@@myamdane6895 yep LeppA40h sounded very nihilistic
Judgement Day sounds pretty damn good
This is the sound of war

Orfeas Koukoumis This is the track that defines the Eclipse.
