I think a lot of confusion across cultures is that here it makes a lot of sense to start dating your best friend. In fact there's a saying in the west that "the best relationships are derived from friendships." It's believed that your partner to some extent should be your best friend. Now there are friends or best friends who develope feelings for each other, and some that end up one sided - but not all male-female relationships end up with anything more than platonic feelings. A more accurate title for the trend would be "kissing my best friend and crush to see if they feel the same."

I respect Korea for having such decent values, but you have the wrong idea about America. We treat kissing very light-heartedly. Kissing is nothing serious to us. But, once again, I have so much respect for Korean culture in this area.

Just a cultural difference. There are lots of things to feel sad about in both directions, but we’re not going to get into that discussion… are we.
Let’s start with how orphans and single parents are treated as bad luck.
And to be fair, I’ll list a bunch of things I think are wrong with my culture.
1. My government is all corrupt
2. People in my country take dating way to lightly.
3. My country’s media morals are all backwards.
4. My country’s school system is worthless now.
I’m really not trying to offend you. I love many things from Korean culture, but I have my complaints about all cultures. Including mine.

Wow, and just when I thought that it's just the Japanese and Chinese that are conservative.
Here in the Philippines, male and female friends can be really close, physically and/or emotionally. I have female friends who stay over at home and vice versa (without being sexual). Some friends do a light kiss on the cheek or lips as a greeting whenever they see each other.
And yes, there are some cases that the "friends with benefits" apply.

From my perspective and life experience, I just don't see casual kissing as that big of a deal. You can just kiss people who want to kiss you for fun and there doesn't necessarily have to be any sexual or romantic connotations to it. Sometimes you just wanna have fun at a party (although we've obviously been having less fun since Covid.) Honestly, if you wanna kiss your friends and they wanna kiss you, go for it.
Bruh what. That would lose the meaning of a kiss, A kiss is supposed to be a romantic gesture.

Even platonically, you can kiss someone on the cheek or forehead (some cultures even give a light peck on the mouth to close family and friends) as a gesture of affection or recognition. But, do you think every person who has ever f*cked has been in love? Every exchange with a sex worker and every FWB situation isn't gonna end in a fairytale wedding. Physical intimacy can be an incredibly emotional and significant act, however, it can also just be fun, meaningless, practical or even routine. Even kisses between married couples aren't always romantic. After twenty years, it's more like 'yup, I'm still here and willing to f*ck you.'

In Latin America kissing is not a big deal. Here we kiss between 3 or even 4 people. Kissing is not something serious for us. It's not like we're going to marry every person we kiss.
@@nadejda_be Maybe they mean just casually making out. It is indeed common in Latin America (at least down here in Brazil) to kiss someone on the mouth and not get attached.
Imo this trend is total bs, like how could they truly be best friends if they are ready to make out at the drop of a hat? I bet most of these people had been flirting for a long time or are actually dating already. I actually have a male best friend and if I tried this I think he'd be concerned for my mental health 💀
Yeah that's literally the point. If you watch the compilation videos of this challenge many explanation how they have been friends and flirt for a long time and they use this trend as a moment to shoot their shot. I have seen plenty with people getting slapped.

clearly it’s different from the US and Korea. in korea you have dates with strangers, but in the US a lot of people are more comfortable with going on dates with close friends. that’s just how it is, it’s not inappropriate. friends tend to flirt with each others in the US sometimes as well. it’s just for fun and sometimes it’s for a hookup, etc. as the half naked comments they kept making there’s nothing not normal about it here either. unless it is for some people. i know a few things about Korea that are not normal but are normal in the US. everyone’s culture is different

@@M00SHTY I think a fair amount of them are real, but not on the premise of being "best friends". Rather that they aren't officially dating yet and neither has taken that final step, but they both know there's something more going on. I've also seen a fair amount where it has failed completely.
These are all fake. Only one that looked a bit real is the one with the girl at the night party with their friends there because they reacted genuinely.

Some people seems to really put boundaries between people's categories like friend, crush, partner and those categories cannot overlap but I personally don't see what's wrong with this challenge. Lots of people have their partner as their best friend. There's also best friends that are very touchy friendly or straight up just comfortable but still don't necessarily want to date each other (like what's wrong with being with one friend in a closed room or a car?). My girls friends and I are touchy with each other and it's fine so why would it becomes weird just because it's a girl-boy duo? It really depend of the people involved. Feelings can also be develop. If you've been friends for years, do you stop being friends just because your feelings towards the other changed? Some people might stop the friendship while some people might decide to just stay friends, it really depends. I personally like being friends and knowing someone for a while before dating them.
They mostly showed the videos that were successful and if some of them were probably fake, I'm sure there were also plenty of real success (and fails) videos during this challenge. Also, it IS a challenge so we're just seeing the interesting videos of that challenge. Obviously, lots of people, probably most of them, feel the same way as the cast towards their friends.

I think part of this is also because here in Korea we have terms for people who are friends but have romantic tension which is normally called “some” or you would call them by saying a person I’m “dating” whereas friend is strictly usually no romance whatsoever.

while kissing isnt a big deal here, and I consider myself fairly free- I never understood the "kissing your friends" part so casually unless you were drunk or something which I have done so myself. I do know someone who is in a tight knit friend group that casually makes out with each other and its hard to understand how they can do that. For sure I've lost some friends who've I've kissed while drunk who ended up attached and similarly I too a few times. Idk if it's purely culture though.
