Great stuff, Dale! I'm a long-time reader of your work in Railpace and remember the great article in Classic Trains. Thanks for all the years of documenting northeastern rail action. Your wife must be a very special and understanding lady!
Fantastic! I grew up in Doylestown in the 70's, and I remember some of that stuff very well. My of my chief regrets is that I didn't take very many pictures. I really enjoyed your work. Thanks
My father was a signal maintainer for the reading railroad same name as me! From 47'-82' briefly went with Conrail. Stationed out of race street tower. Enjoyed your video!
I was part of the crew on 2102 on the Jim Thorpe trip when we had an issue with the water from the Fire Dept. I never heard of the water treatment claim, that was in the water we received,. The water we took onboard, came directly from the creek which also picked up small stones and a lot of silt, which worked like an insulator when it was heated. The sight gauge would violently surge to the top and then drop near the bottom of the glass. We immediately dropped the fire because of an unknown water level in the boiler.
Being in the OHIO area, we enjoyed RDG power after CR. Though we made it to the RDG shops in 1979 and a freshly SEPTA FP7 was at the shops. The only thing painted RDG at this time was a lonely caboose. We saw lots of RDG power during those early CR days. Even saw a pure C430 and GP40-2, and SD45. By far the most common were the GP30-35. Saw these pure RDG locos all the time. Interestingly, we caught red baron 3067 at Cincinnati in 1976. Last week I caught 1067 in Camden, OHIO on the siding. First time I have seen it too. 1067 is losing paint in several locations.
Thank You Dale, this video brought back so many memories of my childhood in the early 70's growing up in the East Falls section of Philly, I live down south now (Georgia) along a NS main near Macon , I clearly remember watching trains move through the West Falls yard , crossing the bridges over the Schuylkill River , My favorite was watching the Push/Pull train skirt by the Project of East Falls housing every evening, the MU cars and the RDC passenger locals were a treat too, I also had Grand parents in North Philly so I got to watch PC E44 electrics and GG-1's pull long freights through the station at Broad Street, I close my eyes and I can still hear those 6 axle diesels crossing the Falls Bridge marked " Bee Line Service " from my boyhood, Again Thanks for a view from my past and such wonderful memories DALE !!!
