Lou Adler is uncredited fifth member who produced the timbre that puts their recordings on an exciting par. The early 20's age and sixties vibe give us fans a rush every time I hear them. Magical! And John Phillips was a genius arranger/songwriter until drug use brought him down.

Certainly great harmonies were present in their singing, and really a signature of the style at the time, along side the Beatles, the Monkees, and several others with four or more performers in their stage line-up. Almost 57-in 2 months and I grew up with dads late 60s music and 70’s music and I was a huge listener and buyer of my generation - in the 80’s! The Mamas and the Papas sitting in the bathtub was one of the first two albums I ever owned; the second being ABBA Arrival. When I was in single digits, I asked my mother for some music and that’s what she gave me. They’re both still among my most favorite groups.
Cass had the best voice. Great songs often fueled by drama and drugs etc., often how it was with groups back then. The song Got a Feelin’ is gorgeous and a lost classic.
All their music was far better than the trash they play today. I can hardly listen to the radio anymore. They stopped playing the oldies of the 60's and 70's for the most part.
John's daughter Chynna was a member of Wilson Phillips. Denny was the Harbour Master on Theodore Tugboat. Mama Cass was in an episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies

Their music highlighted my puberty years. As one who likes to sing I loved “Dream A Little Dream Of Me”. I loved the harmonies in “California Dreamin’” and pursued learning all of them. While learning to play guitar I started with the easy folk songs and loved folk music. I think their music had everything I liked: The melodies and harmonies are unforgettable to this day.

The epoch that was the 1960's will be remembered, recalled and historically recorded by historians of current and future generations. The politicians, celebrities news makers, musicians, their deeds and their picadillos: England's John Profumo, JFK, RFK, MLK, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The English Invasion, Swinging England, Sean Connery's James Bond, Beach Boys, The Doors, Jimmy Hendricks, The Whiskey a go-go, Motown, acid rock and of course The Mamas and the Poppas.

Yes!! She sang "Leaving on a Jet Plane" with him. It was so beautiful it still gives me goosebumps. Her harmonies were spot on.
Whenever i am feeling down in the dumps, i just listen to this wonderful group's beautiful sounds and i suddenly feel better! Rest in peace, Cass, John @ Denny and thank you and also thank you to the gorgeous looking Michelle, for giving us all of your lovely harmonies! . xxxx
Everytime I listen to "California dreamin" I feel like I'm home During a warm sunny day in the 60's America 18 years old. Fun fact , Im born in the late 90's haha
Lol.. funny.. but ya you missed out on some cool stuff for sure
Marrettus ~ I was 11 years old when 'California Dreamin' came out so I remember it, only i was born in freezing England - this song along with "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)" by Scott MacKenzie literally had me dreaming of the Hippy Life in California & still to this day they give me that content feeling✌️PEACE & LOVE

Cass Elliot made this group, her voice was pure gold!
She was the star of the group.
Denny was also a great voice
@@mikeccolella Denny was the only Canadian in the group and Michelle is the only one who is still alive
Just like Brian Jones was for the Rolling stones
@@ivankesisoglu they were all American except for Denny who was the only Canadian in the group
Cass was awesome. Her song "Make your own kind of music" kept me going,
because I was so different from all of the boring kids I grew up with.
California dreaming, one of the best songs ever written, mama and papa harmony, unsurpassed to this day
'go where you wanna go' is hot on its tail...
My favourite song of them is " Twelve thirty " . The Mamas and Papas , the Beach Boys ... what a wonderful era.
I got into these when I was 15. Absolutely still love them today at 56. Their story fascinates me. Just so sad to know that 3 aren't with us now. I like to remember them as young. My favourite song is Twelve Thirty (young girls are coming to the canyon)
The music certainly stands on it's own, an additional component that you were not aware of was how the music was responsible for a major upheaval in our society, you had to be there to get that aspect. Love your choice of Twelve thirty, always one of my favorites ,too. .... "to say good morning, and really mean it....." excellent!
Me too
I just turned 69 not long ago and their music was popular when I was in high school. Each of the great harmonies of their songs seems to remind me of a time and place. In my book they will go down as one of the best folk rock groups of all time. Denny wrote just dynamite musical compositions. From time to time I catch myself whistling one of their tunes to this day!
Me too, just turned a very young, healthy, 70yr!!!
@@l.plzsavethebeez485 Awesome, here's to 70 more!
Didn't know that Denny wrote? Did he write with John Philips or on hs own? What a great voice he had
I loved this groups music. Still play it.
I remember the Mamas & the Papas... Their music brings back great memories... My favorite song from the group is 'Monday Monday' , and my favorite song from the talented Mama Cass Elliott was & Is: 'Make Your Own Kind of Music'. That was a great tune that I'll never forget... It was disappointing to hear of the problems that the group experienced from internal issues, especially the daughter of John Philips, Makensie Philips... Thanks for the memories and this great video!!!
Their music is magic. Together, there was that special energy .... They will be in the dictionary..... I still listen their music
Lou Adler is uncredited fifth member who produced the timbre that puts their recordings on an exciting par. The early 20's age and sixties vibe give us fans a rush every time I hear them. Magical! And John Phillips was a genius arranger/songwriter until drug use brought him down.
I will always have a special place in my heart for mama Cass, because she reminds me of my own mama. My mom is up there singing with her right now, and probably rolling a big fat one.❤😂
"Got a feelin'" is my favourite M&P recording.
How many hit songs did the group have? From Ms. Harper Stacey.
@@harperstacey9604 According to Billboard, Mamas & Papas had six Top Ten: 1. Monday, Monday (#1 for 3 weeks); 2. Dedicated to the one I love (#2 for 2 wks); 3. California dreamin' (#4); 4. Cass Elliot - Words of Love. ❤
I still listen to their albums to this day. Fantastic vocals from Cass and unbelievable harmonies from Michelle. My favourite ones are “California dreaming” and “Creek alley” thanks for this video.
California Dreamin' was the first and the best, though Creeque Alley is always great fun to hear from time to time. I still have their first album.
I dig Creeque Alley. Such a fun tune, reflective of their time. How can anyone not love, 'McGuinn and Maguire couldn't get much higher...' I'd say John Phillips was an old hand, at getting higher. And, that's what they were aiming at.
@@waynej2608 I'm with you on the McGuinn and Maguire lyric. I loved singin' that myself! I don't know if I'd've gotten through those years without all the great music comin' at us for such a good long stretch. Gawd, we were blessed.
Yes they did create the best harmonies ever
Certainly great harmonies were present in their singing, and really a signature of the style at the time, along side the Beatles, the Monkees, and several others with four or more performers in their stage line-up. In later years (the 1970's) the Swedish group ABBA came in to the picture with 'Waterloo' winning the Eurovision contest in 1973. All the songs tell a life story which we as the audience can relate so well...
ABBA won in 1974. Just saying.
@@peecee1384 Yeah.. 'Ring, ring' was the song released earlier, perhaps in 1973, but after all this time, (sands of time in the hour-glass (so are the days of our lives)) I was a bit off on the year..!
@@jamesatkinson6480 Fair enough. I still remember it like it was yesterday…. And the next 2 or 3 (abba) years were the happiest of my life.
Abba placed 3rd with Ring Ring in 1973 in the competition to choose the Swedish entrant for 1973 Eurovision. Like PeeCee mentions, Abba won in 1974 with Waterloo.
Almost 57-in 2 months and I grew up with dads late 60s music and 70’s music and I was a huge listener and buyer of my generation - in the 80’s! I have of my folks 60’s and 70’s LPs and all my 80’s albums I bought in the 80’s. The 3 best decades in music. I have Mama Cass and Mamas and Papas original LPs my folks passed on to me. In my channel I have a Mama Cass video from a few years back (4) maybe where I spin her first solo album. 🤟🏼
Cass and Denny had the best singing voices.
Was a sad day when Cass passed R.I.P
Big Momma
The Mamas and the Papas sitting in the bathtub was one of the first two albums I ever owned; the second being ABBA Arrival. When I was in single digits, I asked my mother for some music and that’s what she gave me. They’re both still among my most favorite groups.
Cass had the best voice. Great songs often fueled by drama and drugs etc., often how it was with groups back then. The song Got a Feelin’ is gorgeous and a lost classic.
Despite the turbulent personal interactions, the harmony of their music was one of the best in folk-rock in my opinion.
Those of us that remember the Mamas and Papas are leaving now. A great moment in time. Life has certainly been strange.
Hey big, where are we going? I'm up for a road trip.
I'm not.
Denny’s voice was so great.
Denny was excellent! 👍🏼❤️
One of the best male voices of the 60's --- along with the Righteous Brothers
Also a Very Decent, Good Guy. Really Loved Him. 💝
All their music was far better than the trash they play today. I can hardly listen to the radio anymore. They stopped playing the oldies of the 60's and 70's for the most part.
Classic Mommas and the Pappas songs that will play on forever. Enjoyed their songs as a pre-teen then. Enjoy their songs as a senior now.
This was my era and the world was great with the mamas and papas. I am also 77 years old and the memoirs are great.
They were a great group. Love all their music. ☮️💟
I loved all their songs! I especially love Mama Cases voice and I was happy when she started recording solo's

Cass elliot held that group up to stardom. Also she was a wonderful kind lady. She was a real lady

Like the Beatles the Mamas and Papas got great harmonies going with unique and different sounding voices. Great songs.
I was a teen too during that period and I bought all of their albums.
At that time ☺️ this was my favorite group....And I still LOVE Their music...man.....I got tears in my eyes...
Cass was the queen pin 👸 G'day from Australia 🇦🇺. May her name be blessed.
It's Creeque's Ally in St Thomas. There were two bars. "Jerry's" and " Walter's Living Room" in that Ally . Now full of beautiful shop's. Those were the days 🌴💃❤️
Didn’t Cass work as a waitress at Duffy’s?

In her latter years Cass died at the age of 32 from a heart attack? Man that's still too young to die from a heart attack! Being obese and using hard drugs apparently don't mix.

It was the british invasion and you missed out racial feminism and no-fault devorce, they had major impact on society since.
Poppas? Hendricks? English Invasion?
1960s ------- not 1960's
cass’s voice was rare and unique. beautiful . im sure the world regrets what they did to her.
what did the world do to her?
fatshaming all her life pushed her to extreme dieting which eventually lead to left-sided heart failure. she was 32 :(
Denny had a great voice, California dreaming he shined
John Phillips was a great composer but EXTREMELY UNDER-RATED as an orchestrator. The arrangements for the backing vocals were written by him, and he oversaw the recording of all their songs. Absolutely some of the most beautiful pop ever recorded.
California dreaming stands out is the only one I love. Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it
