The Importance of U.S. Federal Indian Policy + Understanding the Colonial and Treaty Eras

This webinar examined why an understanding of the history of U.S. federal Indian policy is critical to understanding the relationship between Native nations and the United States today. The session began with an introduction to the museum’s national education initiative, Native Knowledge 360° (NK360°) as well as a framing of federal Indian policy eras as they relate to United States history. Dr. David Wilkins (Lumbee Nation of North Carolina) joined to speak about key elements of the Colonial and Treaty Eras and their legacy today. To close, Dr. Mark Hirsch, a historian at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) spoke with Dr. Wilkins about important takeaways for teachers and students about the significance of both eras, historically and today.
