The tongs are traditionally used to pick up the cups if you are serving other people. This is so you are not touching their cup. But u can use it however you like. ..............i would also recomend getting a kettle were you can control the temperature They are easy to find on amazon for about $50 one that keeps the temperature is good for a longer session though a stovetop kettle will work too and are cheaper. Oh the set for me was on $30 if I remember correctly, idk about the 10 years
The tongs are for the tea to pick up the tea not the cup
