Saint-Saëns wrote this not long before his death. He wrote some of his last pieces for instruments he didn't feel had enough solo repertoire. This is one of those pieces.

Writing this likely finished him off.

What a great harp part! Wonderful bassoon playing too

That was a first class performance. I once played the bassoon and know how it can really "sing" as a solo instrument (like I think the cello is the best of string instruments for solo work). I also know that the bassoon can act as a wonderful sort of large lever device to swing the double reed toward your face and smash it into your teeth. This usually destroys the reed. However, that rarely happens and usually only after you get a reed working just perfectly the way you like it. Terrific accompaniment by the harp, too. That is usually done with a piano, but this is a nice change and works well.

Well done, Dr. Malette-Chénier, both as to adaptation and performance - I aspire to have your talent for balance. Perhaps this version will make the sonata a tad more portable and perfect for, say, a garden-party recital, (I know that harpists sometimes agree to play in the darnedest places.🙂) Dr. Katayama is also divine - those low notes in the third movement (or portion) are lovely, not at all gritty. My late father played the bassoon, and he'd be the first to compliment her.

Gorgeous... Its my favorite piece for bassoon, but sounds like it was originaly composed for bassoon and harp. (which is as far as I know)
