The Sleeper car was born in an era where style wasn't everything, but power meant everything. While appearing to be a standard or neglected car, internally they are modified to have higher performance levels, typically referred to as "all go and no show." Some vehicle owners create sleepers by swapping more powerful engines or making other performance modifications, like adding supercharging or turbocharging, leaving the external appearance as it came from the factory. Sometimes hints of the car's true nature are visible: wider tires, a lower stance, or a different engine tone or exhaust note. If you built your own sleeper car, what would it be? Sleepers are awesome, and my family has one as a DD...2018 Ford Flex Limited, AWD, 3.5L EcoBoost (which replaced the 2011 Flex EB we had before it). These cars are a Taurus SHO with a wagon body, and are surprisingly pretty quick and nimble for their size and weight. Bro
It's a VW
Get something that's worth your money
On board with this. I almost had a 6mt w8 wagon, but was unable to pull together the funding :(
Nobody wants that sh*tbox of a car
I've got one for ya! Just stay with me for 2 seconds here. Factory supercharged v6 that you could own for like under 3k. Your grandma's bubble buick from the late 90s early 2000s. The buick park Avenue. Arguably one of the best sleepers out there. The 3800 is a more than proven v6 while it is front wheel drive you can also find this same engine (not supercharged) in some of the Camaros in the same time period. Those can be supercharged with junkyard heads and a modified supercharger or have one shipped up from the buys down under cause their holdens 3.8 had a supercharger.
There is also a lot of aftermarket support for these engines where you can get performance cams and upgraded springs and lifters. I've even seen turbo kits for the non supercharged variant if that's your thing. These engines are also plentiful. At my local large pick n pull place I can easily find 20+ cars with the 3800 in it and occasionally the supercharged one so there's no worries about blowing it up. Literally this was in almost every gm car in the late 90s
"BEST MF THUMBNAIL EVER!" :D .. Owner of one of them beaut's.. About as sleeper as it can get, then you hear that LS3 blow past ya :0
Love the car but I hate to say this. Most definitely not a sleeper for almost all car guys/gals. Not only are they mildly aggressive but most know what lies beneath the hood of that small sized sedan and the tuning possibilities of the stock motor/setup. You could fool some cocky stock 5.0 or camaro owner but if they’re a real car person they’l know wassup
Far from a sleeper lol
@@slumygoat Yep, my dad says his looks just like any other regular Chevy sedan but it’s bright red and the hood has some aggressive lines and there are mildly sporty design cues across the car. Definitely not a sleeper IMO. Fun? Oh yeah, definitely!
@@NatedoGP Yes sir
The G8 (its older brother) looks more aggressive imo. Id rather get the rare GXP LS3 than a Malibu.
Sleepers has always been the best, just show up too any meet, find the snob guy that keeps bragging & you can be everyone’s hero by shuting his ass up XD

@@speedtab215 I'm not
I currently own a 2004 Volvo S60 2.5t that I'm looking to make into a sleeper, and I can tell you personally that a big problem of trying to build a sleeper is a lack of aftermarket support as your vehicle isn't normally modified like you're trying to do so the money isn't there for the big aftermarket companies.
Modern sleeper: Kia Stinger GT. True, looks a little sporty but not blow-your-doors-off sporty.
Its name is stinger.. like sting ray..
They made a hsv gtsr which is a “Chevy” ss on roids, has an LSA in it not an LS3
They made much more than that.
GTSR w1 has a LS9 under the bonnet haha 636hp from the factory

I actually wanted to build a sleeper car at some point but not too long ago I didn't have enough money for it.
Sleeper is good when you don't want looks attractive but want a fast car.
Ok boys, its one thing to show the fourth season opening, but to show a big fight scene might be a little to spoilery for the community
Hondas are the ultimate sleeper. No one takes them serious til its all over.
After driving a slightly modified G and a stock Altima. An SS or G8 would be my ideal next car
My next car WILL be a 2017 Chevy SS. Love that virtually nobody knows what they are. Chevys best kept secret.
I'm glad that MAZDASPEED 6 was there. Yes they have speed in the name, but no one really notices that anyways. Plus debadge very common
Honestly a sleeper is the best it’s like someone testing you and you answer with whooping them

@9:30 Sleeper car Chevy SS? But without the sleeper car price. Used these things go for over $42K!!!
If I see an old Volvo at a meet, I automatically assume it's a sleeper
A sleeper is worth it especially if you live in a country like Australia that has strict car modification laws. my 96 integra is a sleeper and cops don't bat an eye because I never fixed the faded paint and scratches as well as the dents.

I had an '87 ( that's in the 1900's ) Buick Regal T type LC. It was a GNX except, it was Blue and had a big chrome grille with all the chrome badges and sim/con top. It was great fun to beat down pretty much anything... as long as I could keep the tires from burning down to the rims!
So you want a Volvo S40/C30/V50 T5

Chevy SS is so hard to find nowadays and they haven’t lost much value. Amazing car though!
That’s why that car pisses me off. I thought they’d be very affordable by now instead they’re holding value.
@@luisrosales9349 for real! Having a kid on the way I’m looking for a 4 door v8 that’s easy to mod. Seems it’s this or a charger...
Ford Taurus sho is hands down the best American sleeper. I say this because the new caddy’s with twin turbo v6 and awd still cost to much used for under a 15k sleeper budget. Like slap a 1000$ fuel pump on there and you will be maxing them turbos out!
Lincoln Continental tho.... Same motor, more grandpappy
@@Acrimoniousbear1 no that has the 3.0 tt and it’s freaking expensive asf man 😬 did u not read the under a 15k budget part 😅.
Alex doesn't know the joy of owning a V70R, they're nowhere near as unreliable as people claim they are if I'm honest.. I owned mine for 6 years and did extensive modification to it to the tune of putting down 430 awhp and 480 ft lbs of torque, it walked just about everything on the road in my area aside from a McLaren 570S that I ran into on the highway coming back from work one day. The truth of the matter is that no matter what you choose to be your sleeper car you have to pick the car that you want. You can't just want a sleeper car because you think it would be fun to mod and have a unsuspecting looking car that's fast, you have to live for sleeper cars. Most everyone I know who owns a sleeper dailies that car, it goes with the territory of owning a car of that era.
I live the sleeper car life. Passat W8 wagon. Golf Sportwagen w/4Motion with a Golf R turbo swap. One sounds like Chewbacca the other hurts feelings at stoplights.
I already own one, a tbss aka a corvette suv and I love here.
A Lexus ISF because 99% of people on the road don’t know what they are ,and will assume it’s an IS250/350 Fsport.

I still haven't seen the Cobalt SS nor the speed6
Older Australian commodore cop cars (bt1) are perfect examples, they were the entry level body and styling but with the performance of the top model, with the v8, bigger breaks, stiffer suspension etc. etc. very sought after down under!!
I love my MS6. Just looks like a normal 4 door sedan, but it hauls ass and handles really well, especially given its weight.
