It's happening with me too. I think I'm applying too much tension in the toes. Probably, making the movement outside the pool will help you to understand how to do the whole thing without any unnecessary tension.

Definitely too much knee bend. You can see how his knees are exiting his streamline and there is a loss of propulsion from the excessive bend. It works to move him forward but it would not be as effective while swimming. That all being said, his kick is far more effective than mine.
Uhh yeah. He is bending knees too much. That makes your kick way less efficient. I've read that you want to keep legs in as tight of an area as possible (approximately 1 foot). I've you want to pretend that your kicking inside of a barrel. This is a bad example. The shown kick cause too much drag.
I am extremely surprised to see how much propulsion he is having with his technic. I must be doing something very wrong as I hardly move when I flutter kick with a board. I will try to point my feet and see what happen. When I swim my propulsion is coming mainly from my arms not my feet. I would like to change that a little.

Turning the feet in very slightly helps stabilize the knees so they dont bend too much but aren't locked.
fins worked great for me , you have to flutter kick right or they don't work, which is how I learned to flutter kick
My toes always cramp up when I try this. What can I do to prevent this?

Do some ankle exercises using dumbells if you have it otherwise normal ankle exercises along with hip mobility

Yeah he was probably getting fatigued at this patient so you see more knee bend than what was probably there when he started

He is pretty well built. Try getting stronger thigh and leg muscles.

There is no need to kick so much in the front crawl, it's an arm stroke and over kicking will just tire you out
