My father got his original Mini Moog Model D in 1974, 14/15 years old. most of his relatives was sponsing him, and as he was the first and only Moog owner of Northern Norway, it was short cut of getting to play on the records of some very prominent Norwegian Musicians. As a Moog player/ synth soloist he is up there With Jan Hammer. I also own a Moog, but its a Sub 37, its also a great synth, but nothing sounds quite like a real model D, or perhaps a model D by behringer can I am Glad Behringer has comed up With something that can give us the Authentic Moog sound for such a good price.
Put my headphones on at work, opened up this page, and just listened to the sounds while working on spreadsheets. Sonic bliss. I could go all day on this.
Just received mine yesterday! Wow, I'm blown the F away! What an awesome piece of musical art! I own the Voyager, Sub 37 and MF-pedal. Nothing can touch this beast! Thanks for the super demo!
Hey Daniel, I'm not sure if you ever see these comments, but you are, by far, the best synth demonstrator on RUclips. I just got the Arturia Mini V Minimoog software synth on my computer, and this was a tremendous help in teaching me, at a level I could understand as a beginner, how everything works. Wow, Daniel Fisher shredded on it... that was great.... mine is on order... KUDOS to MOOG for bringing it back the right way. Many are complaining about the price, but it is better than paying 5 to 8k for a used one that is not near as dependable as this will be, and that has a horrible keybed. It cost money to have these parts made.
No Daniel this didn't cost the price of a car lol. I got mine when I was a teenager new in 1978 in So.Cal. (Coast Music for you oldsters from the area) for 1900.00, maybe the price of a beater car lol. Anyway always luv your videos, and this is actually one of the best D demos out there 👍
I love the sound of Moogs, including Model D, that is one of the more affordable ones. Still I think it is over my possibilities, especially as it is only a hobby to listen to nice sounds, far from anything professional. So just have a KORG Microkey 47 + Arturia MiniV. I know it is not the real thing, but for my untrained ears very close to that (without real life potmeters) I really like this demo too, what I do not get: why they want to show it's noise producing cabailities at the middle of the video, when it should be mainly used for music? This is not the only Model D video does that. Lot of funny and weird sounds, no music play. The last part is just fantastic, THAT is the sound for my ears.
We connected a 1/4" TS cable to a TC Electronic Flashback, and a L/R 1/4" TS to 1/8" TRS cable from the Flashback to the video camera's Audio Input. Thanks for watching!
It's not that big of a deal of course. And it's not a complaint. I think it's fantastic they are re-launching the Mini Moog model E ...... sorry, 'D' (with extras & brand spanking new). Of course to the purists it probably sounds nothing like an original. I seriously want one though. I'd rather have a brand new synth than something that was launched when I was in pre-school.
Because they're trying to cash in on the analog vintage craze. People don't want an "E"....they want a "D". Even if changes are made, Moog is smart enough to call it what people want to hear.
Hi DanJ30. That's why the label on the side of the box clearly states: "Warning - This Device May Put Your Eardrums Through A Meat Grinder." Hopefully, that removes all liability. Thanks for watching
Hi zedster911, you should expect more; and you certainly do get more in the 2016 version: Keyboard Velocity, Channel Aftertouch, MIDI In/Thru/Out, an additional LFO, four CV Outputs, five CV Inputs, new Modulation switch options, an updated power supply, and a modern, problem-free Fatar keyboard. Thanks for watching!
Hi James, Although the external power supply is less convenient, it's sonically advantageous to get that transformer out of the synthesizer. Thanks for watching!
Just missed the FedEx man delivering my new Moog Model D by 4 fricken minutes!! I can't believe I have to wait a whole 24 hours to get it. Oh the pain of it all.......
Woooah that ping pong on top sent my head to space. In bloody sane !!!. Neatly dealt with 👍👍. I was just thinking a geeky auestion here. Do you think that having an external power supply helps with pitch stabilty as theres is less emission of internal heat ?
hi. I was talking with one model D owner on Facebook and he was pointing out he haves the model D and I don't and that I'm jealous..he was telling me that he was working hard for it and that he's making more money than I do ..he was dead serious about he's opinion about my jealousy he even send me a video of he's D..made he's priorities owning the model D mine as well... so I'm asking..are some Moog owners having mental ego issues often or was my experience just a coincidence? 🤔😁
Nice demo Daniel! Now what can I sell to finance one. This is a must have. Already have the korg ARP Odyssey. If I got the model D, dare I say it, I could rule the world...
All depends on what you want. If you're just looking for a good money deal, this synth probably isn't going to win "value for money" awards. The Moog Sub 37 arguably offers much more bang for the buck all around. But if you want a Minimoog sound and a high-quality instrument, then that's the need this fulfills. That's what it was designed for, and hopefully that's what it delivers. The jury is out until more units are out and about and people have had a good chance to test and play with them.
+DoomCity202 you're paying for the remake of synth that really is part of our collective history, most would agree it's perhaps not 'worth it' in comparison to other synths if you only look at features but that's not what it's about. It's gorgeous to look at, ya kids will love it, there's too with luck. Better synths by design features such as jdxa really are amazing but will they still have allure in thirty years? I'm not sure. This will, it's already passed the test of time, I don't want to spend 3k on a damn mono but I've always wanted one of these, I can see me getting finance on one even though I know it's not really 'worth it'
+SyntaxXxatnyS the oberheim is totally gorgeous but honestly after seeing it I'm not sure how it's going to last compared to this, I also did not like certain dials and their respective dead areas, jury out on that one IMO.
Hi Dan, it's the TC Electronic Flashback Delay. If you press SHOW MORE under the info text at the top, you'll get more info along with a link to the Flashback. Thanks for watching!
One has to wonder, would the original Model D of the 70s have included the modifications in this reissue model, if the technology existed back then? Does anyone th No the mods interfere with the original architecture in any fashion?
I like how they expanded the Modulation without adversely affecting the basic design. They took away the foot switch jacks for the Glide and Decay. I hate those ribbed wheels. Why didn't they go for clear ones that made the originals look so cool?
My guess is that the ribbed wheels grip to the finger better. Especially in fast chopping live situations. Not saying im right but that is a possibility.
Does anyone know if the pitch wheel of the new reissue coming straight out of a box is very tight ? And rigid ? I just got mine and the pitch wheel is very tight , and am wondering if it’ll loosen up over time ?
Very nice demo!!! Does anyone know which oscillator boards have been recreated in the Minimoog reissue? The "fatter" early ones or the more stable later ones? Thanks!
SweetwaterSound Thank you for the reply + time stamp. That is actually the part that I was referring to-- it may be an optical illusion, but it looks like the panel is slightly ajar. On closer inspection, it looks like the wood on the top of the panel actually sticks out a little bit as a way to stop the panel. At any rate, wonderful review and demo as always! Any plans to do more demos with the new Model D? I love watching your demos where you incorporate your theremin for CV control ;)
Hi Derek. Back then, the price of the original would have bought a new basic car. Today, the price of the current version would buy a used basic car. Thanks for watching!
these things are interesting for me... As I just think musicians buy them to find out their music sounds the same! When was the last time you heard a song and went 'omg they used a moog bass?' lol
not long ago to be honest, I was on Unckle concert and I think I saw minimoog (or voyager) I do music in virtual synth and can say that when I got right synth I wanted I feel happier so if moog sound is what you need you may have better music than now (if u have any) :)
Nice video, thanks. But I am very pissed off with the rip off country UK - the new Mini Moog costs £3.300 over here and when buying one in the US, you pay £600 less! That is insane!
George Tempest we pay less for the Model D and lots of other things due to your import prices, but you get free health insurance and we pay hundreds a month... so it kinda balances out. If anything, you're ahead cause hey, what's more important than your health? Am I right ;)
What is the midi spec? I really don't know why moog had to ruin their other modern synths by severely limiting the high end so everything sounds dull and low pass filtered. This sounds much better but cost a ridiculous amount for a mono. Can you now have 2 oscillators and 2 LFOs?
Hi TheBigGuppy, the way a synth sounds through delay is a crucial, decision-making quality for me and some friends in the synth world. It'd be like listening to a raw guitar demo without sections featuring distortion or reverb. But you can hear over 14 minutes of pure minimoog Model D from 3:08 - 7:08, 8:30 - 12:30, 12:59 - 14:50, 15:15 - 18:56, and 20:28 - 21:20. Thanks for watching!
original minimoogs didn't "cost as much as a car." they were about $1,500. you couldn't buy a car in the 70s for $1,500 unless it was a used car, like a '57 chevy or '70 chevelle super sport or something like that. in the 80s, people advertised them for $150-200 and couldn't get rid of them.
chieftp and those days will never return. Idiots selling minimoogs for $300 to replace em with crap like dx7's. People by now have come to their senses.
James Reeno they weren't idiots. that was just the market value at the time. also, the DX7 wasn't "crap." it was a state of the art synth at the time and people lined up around the block to buy them. 30 years later, they're still holding up just fine.
Chers amis internautes. Vous me suivez jusqu'a là? Bon. Tant mieux.
Hi David, Right. Like the original Minimoog Model D, there are no presets and there's nowhere to save a new preset. Fortunately, once you get to know the relatively simple front panel, you'll find that you can get your desired sounds on the fly.
PapunaOfficial The Model D wasn't meant to perform complex synthesis, it is a tone machine. Plus, this is a renaissance, and a company like Moog must be looking at the prices that the modulars and Minis fetch on the second hand market and were wondering why they couldn't get in on that cash cow. They waited until the absolute peak to jump in.
And ruin the surprise? ;-) Seriously though, we went to 3:14 and couldn't find anything jarring there. Was 3:14 where you meant to link to? Thanks for watching!
+SweetwaterSound yeah, I should have put the time a few seconds before. My ear drums felt like they were being sucked out of my ears from the extreme low frequency around that time. I'm not knocking your video though, It's a great demonstration. :)
I sold my 50 Aniv. Voyager it simply SUCKED.... Soon YT will be flooded with AB war comparisons between which one is better. The original or re-issued D model.
Can't believe in 30 yrs + as keyboard player never heard of or came in contact with the Creamware. I was aware of a rather obscure STUDIO ELECTRONICS MIDIMOOG rack mounted Model D which didn't interest me much... Thanks much for the reply glad to know I can still trust my ears.
Hi starglider101, You can hear pure minimoog Model D from 3:08 - 7:08, 8:30 - 12:30, 12:59 - 14:50, 15:15 - 18:56, and 20:28 - 21:20, for over 14 minutes of raw, unprocessed minimoog sound. Thanks for watching!
quality what? I watched the video and listened to Daniel Fisher's comment about synthesizers costing the same amount as cars when the model d was first issued. Bug off james reeno
+MegaCrasherMusic I see loads on people on enthusiast forums torturing themselves because they do not have this kind of money to spend but have heard how legendary the Model D is. They have this picture of this instrument being everything that all other synthesizers are not. This is simply just not true. I love Moog. I love what the company does and stands for but this price just seems to be over the top for what it really is. It is sort of like if Korg charged 3k for the MS-20 mini. I played an original Model D at Moogfest 2016. I didn't have an "oh yeah that is why people want this" moment. They had a Prophet 5 next to it which I had never played before and also heard how legendary it was. The Prophet 5 actually deserves it's praise and was far more capable than the Model D. The Voyager and Sub 37 also showed me their worth at their given prices. I can see why Bob Moog wanted to update the Model D in the way he did in the form of the Voyager and from my personal hands on time, it was worth it. Meanwhile I see you jumping on every comment on this video pushing people to buy this even when one person said they would need 3 year financing to get one. But you said if he really wanted one he could find a way. I really want a Tesla and I have been pre-approved for one. But the reality is I would be struggling to pay my mortgage if I did get it. Sure I could find a way but it just isn't logical.
It is probably the most popular vintage synth. It was featured in a google doodle. Uninformed rich people know about it. They are going to sell a lot to those people.
+MegaCrasherMusic I feel like you work for Sweetwater as a Moog rep or something. This is not the first time I have seen you commenting on Moog video's before trying desperately to convince people to separate with lots of their money. You are filling in justifications for people who have long since stopped commenting. All my point was getting at is there are better synths if you have lots of money to part with. I have no problems with Moog and would love to work for them some day if the stars align right. I hope to even own one of their instruments one day other than the Werkstatt. But It certainly won't be an over priced over romanticized Model D. I will pick from one of their more forward thinking modern featureful synths. If you are in a 70's psychedelic rock band or a Bob Marley tribute band and just need that specific sound, then great! Blow an absurd amount of money on one of these. But really anyone else will get more for the money from so many other synths from Moog, DSI, Modal Electronics, etc etc.
My father got his original Mini Moog Model D in 1974, 14/15 years old. most of his relatives was sponsing him, and as he was the first and only Moog owner of Northern Norway, it was short cut of getting to play on the records of some very prominent Norwegian Musicians. I was going to spend $4000.00 on a dental implant, but this seems like a lot more fun.
i think this will chew your food for you......
Just imagine, if you brushed your teeth you could have had a Minimoog.
Heathcliff who needs teeth?
I just need 3 saw tooth
I won a Herbie Hancock minimoog signed
Just received mine yesterday! Wow, I'm blown the F away! What an awesome piece of musical art! I own the Voyager, Sub 37 and MF-pedal. Nothing can touch this beast! Thanks for the super demo!
I've been waiting for these demos to hear how it sounds, and I'm not disappointed at all. Thing sound right.
Hey Daniel, I'm not sure if you ever see these comments, but you are, by far, the best synth demonstrator on RUclips. its used to cost the price of a car and now all these years later it still does haha
a used car; and not a very good used car :)
Thank you for posting this! One of, if not, the best sounding analog synthesizers in the history of synthesizers period.
Great Intro and demo of this high-end-class-A-synthesiser.
Hell of a demo Daniel. You're one of the best. Appreciate it.
Wow, Daniel Fisher shredded on it... that was great.... mine is on order... KUDOS to MOOG for bringing it back the right way. Yep, I wanted an Arp Quadra too but they are a mother to keep working! lol
***** I'm on the waiting list for a Cornwall VCS3. I think that will do it for me.
MegaCrasherMusic the price is fine considering what the original went for.
synthartist69 its a great synth n yes, quality costs $$$. I only wish Roland would re-issue some of their classics... not a fan of their boutique line
I hope that Moog will bring the Model D back in production someday because I would really love to have one!
Awesome profile pic! Klaus Schulze is a legend!

Vibrating the finger on the key at 19:49 for multiple outputs, can't do that on a piano!
what a fantastic demo

In 1978 you could buy a car for 1900 dollar.
Damm Daniel, back at it again with the Model D... Sonic-ally Stunning!!! - There is no Substitute

If inspiration and the love of the instrument helps you then ya, if not then I suppose NO.
these things are interesting for me...
PapunaOfficial like you said 'saw' not heard. Big difference but I respect your opinion!
Hermoso :'3
How many other wood finishes will be available?
Any you need and desire, simply go to B and Q and apply generously 👍🏻
$3500?
Oh well, who needs food anyway.....
Prism Blue fasting for a while actually boost creativity and energy levels when done right with water and seasalt, so yeah who needs food 👍😉🎵
Am I right ;)
81 I had a chance to get a Model D for 500 bucks,, yes, I've gotten really good at kicking my own ass.
"D'oh!" -_Daniel_
The core of PinkFloyd sounds.
What is the midi spec? I really don't know why moog had to ruin their other modern synths by severely limiting the high end so everything sounds dull and low pass filtered. This sounds much better but cost a ridiculous amount for a mono. Can you now have 2 oscillators and 2 LFOs?
Other Moogs are fine. My Sub Phatty will take your head off.
Would not have used delay on the demo ..... unless Sweetwater is giving a free delay with a purchase of the Moog.
LOOKA DAT FLAT TOP
original minimoogs didn't "cost as much as a car." they were about $1,500. you couldn't buy a car in the 70s for $1,500 unless it was a used car, like a '57 chevy or '70 chevelle super sport or something like that. in the 80s, people advertised them for $150-200 and couldn't get rid of them.
chieftp u adjusting for inflation???
chieftp and those days will never return. Idiots selling minimoogs for $300 to replace em with crap like dx7's. People by now have come to their senses.
James Reeno
they weren't idiots. that was just the market value at the time. also, the DX7 wasn't "crap." it was a state of the art synth at the time and people lined up around the block to buy them. 30 years later, they're still holding up just fine.
1500 dollar in 1971 = 11,809 dollar now. You could perfectly buy a car for that money.
On one hand I love it. On the other it is just too impractical for stage use as it lacks any storage options. So I keep my Phatties.
anonymusum never stopped Bernie Worrel or George Duke.
anonymusum this is better.
Chers amis internautes.
Vous me suivez jusqu'a là?
Bon.
Tant mieux.
If given a choice...this or the sub 37?
No presets right?
And can you save a new preset?
Hi David, Right. Like the original Minimoog Model D, there are no presets and there's nowhere to save a new preset. Fortunately, once you get to know the relatively simple front panel, you'll find that you can get your desired sounds on the fly.
SweetwaterSound Thanks for your response!
David German you have never heard of the minimoog??
James Reeno Yes, just wasn't sure about the No Presets on the "Model D".
David German it's never had presets.
why did they stopped voyager and than re released this?
Voyager market was already oversaturated.
PapunaOfficial this is MUCH better.
James Reeno in what point? why would they release in 2002 something worst than in 197x ?
PapunaOfficial voyager sucks
A headphone user's warning would have been nice, aaRGH! 03:14
4:20 than what???
lol
only Gearslut-ers will understand that one
LOL - Oh boy! :)
I sold my 50 Aniv. Voyager it simply SUCKED.... Soon YT will be flooded with AB war comparisons between which one is better. The original or re-issued D model.
Folke Musika the Creamware MINIMAX sounds closer to the Model D than the voyager ever did.
Folke Musika quite obvious that it sounds like the original. All the voyagers sucked.
Take the TC Electronic Flashback Delay just hear real sound of the synth, please.
Still costs the price of some cars ;-)
Brent Valenzuela quality
quality what? I watched the video and listened to Daniel Fisher's comment about synthesizers costing the same amount as cars when the model d was first issued. Bug off james reeno
Brent Valenzuela worth it. If u cannot afford it, buy a microbrute.
Brent Valenzuela a real CHEAP car.
Brent Valenzuela a JUNK car.
That filter= acid
Just get an MS-20....
shadowseal22 have one. It sucks on every level compared to this.
the wood is too light. we need wallnut
Buy walnut stain, simple.
Marcusmiller who cares??
Nothing warrants that 3500 dollar price point. Also, that's still the price of a car
Nutshell2K don't buy it.
Nutshell2K worth every cent.
James Reeno My Rhodes didn't cost this much. Smh
Nutshell2K so??
Are you actually hearing how this thing sounds? But feel free to enjoy your digitally-controlled quasi-analog garbage.
Lovely Demo :)
Lol...3500.....
+MegaCrasherMusic What could they possibly be doing with this thing that justifies the cost? I say just buy a Sub 37. Way cheaper and more features.
+MegaCrasherMusic
I feel like you work for Sweetwater as a Moog rep or something.
I am guessing you thought it would be $650?
