  • Driftin' is an incredibly beautiful tune written by jazz pianist and educator, Dan Haerle. Bill Evans recorded the tune on a single occasion, live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland on July 20th, 1975. Upon listening to Driftin', one may appreciate the extraordinary harmonic colors Evans creates on the piano, thanks in part to the underlying musical substance of Haerle's composition. I would like to thank the talented Bob Hinz for transcribing this 1975 performance for me and helping create such an accurate historical record. I would also like to thank my friend Hans Riess for helping finance the transcription. For many years I wondered how Evans discovered this composition. I wrote to Dan Haerle, who was kind enough to share the amazing story behind Driftin', which is displayed at the end of the video.
