Thanks for watching. This Poulan pro trimmer was working just fine until one day the pull rope was pulled and it stayed out. It was running so it was used and while it was running the rope slowly began to retract. After taking the covers apart we found the problem. It turns out that the problem came from the factory. Oh and there was a surprise waiting for me too. Авто/Мото
Wow! Thank you! I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to remove the clutch assembly. You rock!
thank you I appreciate that
Your a legend most people wont show how to put the spring back and wind it. Not only did you do that but you explained why where and how it all goes back together. Thank you
no problem and you thank you for the kind words
Fixing to do this project tomorrow, same weed hacker, thanks!
I have a Poulan Wild Thing 2375 chain saw that has the same pull string issue. I will try to fix it myself with the helpful information you provided here. I never fixed anything in my life but you gave me the courage. Thanks!
You're welcome Hoon Chung and thanks for the comment I appreciate it
This was one of the most useful “how to’s” I’ve come across. No loud music or long intro on why the weed eater was invented. Straight to the point and got it done. Fixed me up pretty quick. Thank you!
no problem and thank you Ickess.
I'm usually pretty successful when it comes to getting something to work once more. Messing with the pull chord has always been challenging. After watching this I have a old trimmer in the parts bin that had other issues not worse fixing but one of the parts that I could not fix was to pull cord. I'm going to have to go out to the garage later on today and give it a try.
Another great video look forward to watching more.
thank you David Frank
So didn't have a binding issues, but used this video to help me change the starter rope. Thank you.
No problem and thanks for the comment I appreciate it
I took my Poulan Pro to a small engine shop and they said it was not worth the money to fix it. I will now do it myself, so yes, this video has given me the confidence! attempt it.
good to hear it.
Helped me out big time. I still did something wrong bc the flywheel makes a whining sound when i stop the saw. But hey you helped me diassemble and reassemble. Thank you for such detail.
no problem
This is the exact problem I had. The trick with pulling the spark plug and inserting rope was genius. I had taken the trimmer to the repair shop and they told me it wasn't worth the cost to repair and that I should buy a new one. 1.5 hrs and it purrs like a kitten. Thanks!
no problem and nice work Dane Surra
I replaced my pull cord this weekend. Didn't have to many problems, but as much as I hate I may have to make another attempt on winding the spring on the cord return. .most of the time it will go all the way back. But then again, I don't want to screw it up and have to replace something else. Thanks for the information it was very helpful. Thanks!
no problem and thank you Harry Keel.
Thank you . Tou helped me alot finding the screw to remove the cluch. TP. You dont have to put a rope in the cilinder to remove the clutch. There is a hole in the front of the clutch to put a screwdriver to lock the cilinder
really? I'll have to try that out, thanks.
Great video, working on one now with rope problems. Tks !🇺🇸
Good luck!
I definitely would have had a professional like you had to fix that becase i would have never been able to get that spring to wind back up lol. Great video as always my friend.
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it and yes it's an easy thing to do.
I used a screw gun lol
Thanks, I finally got this POS back together. No matter what I do, rebuild the carb, replace it, new filters, the thing is always a pain in my balls to start; I despise this weed eater!!
I don't care for this one either
First, I went down the rabbit hole of your videos, great channel. Second, I have this old Mantis tiller that i can’t get to run for shit, waiting for parts. Third, Poulan should provide lots of content for your channel. I tore into one recently too. Good machine, easy to fix. Cheers!
Thank you J G. I have a mantis video waiting in the wings. Is your the echo engine or honda engine?
@@HomeGaragechannel Mine is the echo engine so old it doesn’t have a primer bulb, late 80s. It was hard finding a carb I hope the one I ordered fits.
I fixed it. It was a mess. I recommend using a piece of metal stuck in the motor instead of the rope, works better. The rope got stuck and was very hard to remove. AMD also now I have two extra screws (one is very tiny) and can’t find we’re they belong but the machine works smooth. Thank you
No problem and thanks for the update
Great video. Thank you. 👍👍👍👍👍
thank you Brad T.
Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure!
Very informative. Thanks
No problem and thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Thanks for the video that really helped! cheers!
Glad it helped!
I have the exact same model with the same problem. Easy fix.
thank you 69 DZ 302 Camaro
Thanks man. I have the same power head on my pole saw. I felt like I was taking way too many parts off, saw your video and realized... that's just how this fix is. I did have to go buy a torx key set so I could get to the screw on the clutch; my bits were too big. Thanks again.
You're welcome and thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Great video and thank you for helping me fix the pull string on my weed eater..
no problem
I have done this type of repair it's not a easy one for sure. Great video on it. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you RayFpv for the comment. I appreciate it.
RayFpv cool chucky thing
Fixing mine - wasnt sure how far I really needed to tear it down to replace the string and now I know! Thanks a lot sir, much appreciated! #HOOAH! You should do an all in one video on this - where the long fuel line goes and the short fuel line and adjusting the idle and air / fuel screws to get it to run perfectly - and to top it off, how to put the trigger back in place if it pulls to the side and gets jammed up, it would help a ton of people - #ShortSweetLoudAndProud !
thank you AEON.
Thanks making this video my string won't pull out or go in just happened. No warning , I kept undoing screws finally found your video
I hope you get it fixed. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Sounds like a teacher and a good one too!
Thank you..,
Thank you Ahmed M for the comment I appreciate it
Great video! I'd try to repair it myself, it would be a learning experience anyway.
Thank you Dusty Barrick for the comment. I appreciate it.
Loved the video and i have one just like it i bough at a yard sale late in the season and it needs a coil but getting at it was a lot easier that your project. I am retired now and would tackle a repair like that no problem .
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it.
Thanks for the video. Super job. I had a broken rope and this video helped me fix it. Thank you soo much.
no problem and thanks for the comment I appreciate it
You saved me money!!
thank you Hammer WR for the Super Thanks, I appreciate it.
Very useful video. My pull cord broke and now that I know what's involved I have a good idea on how to fix it. But like you asked would I do it or do I take it to someone else? They might tell to but a new one. But its running good and I use it most of the time.
you are correct, the cost to fix is sometimes prohibitive .
Cool video
Thanks for the comment.
Great video brother. I got my cherry popped on a forward mounted pull starter mounted trimmer similar to this one.(may have been a Bolens or Ryobi) BUT it had one spring to activate ANOTHER spring. It was weird because when you pulled the rope there was a delay then it kinda snap started the trimmer. Kinda wish I had video of that now. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Dave for sharing your experience. I appreciate it.
I subbed. This video helped me out with the recoil. What happened on mine was I pulled the rope hard and it came out of the pulley. After watching this to figure out how to take it apart, the recoil works but now it starts and dies.
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it. You might have to adjust the carb.
After watching this video, I would definitely tackle this job, if I could take a Subaru outback motor, I for sure could do this job, thank to you, for the illustration of how you did this rope pull job. Thank you for your time, and detail illustration..
Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
It works thanks for the information. Great video!
No problem. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
I have had my Poulan Pro pp258tpc for many years now and this summer I started having this problem. I was a little nervous to tackle it until I found your video. Your video made this fix for me a breeze!! The exact same thing with spring not being in the right place was my problem to. I have everything back together and works better then ever. Does the poulan pro pp258tpc has a spark arrestor? Thank you for this video!!!
Glad it helped
Great video. Can you share one in how to replace a carburetor for the same Poulan trimmer ? Thank you
Unfortunately I don't have this trimmer anymore.
0:09 Yep, best intro ever.
Thanks man.
I was too pooped to jump the 1st time , just coming in from another batch of leaves. Poulan stuff is fine when you're younger and nimbler but when you get old and grouchy it's best to have your son-in-law with an empty place for it. I had to open the lo on the 85 this morning. 1st time since I got it and opened the hi a dab too and it seems to run the vacuum even better. Didn't take but maybe 1/8th on the lo and 1/16th on the hi but enough was enough. The Echo is doing fine so it stays put. Thanks, Good fix and Blessings!
wow that makes perfect sense
@@HomeGaragechannel 4 here it does!
@@HomeGaragechannel I got a GREAT son-in-law!
I opened my poulan pro today as the pull cord was playing up. The spring came off like yours. I wasn't sure how the cup holding the spring goes back. After watching your video I know I have put the cup holding the spring the wrong way. It still pulls but I will change it tomorrow but it is hard work though.
Thanks
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
This design is quite similar to the weed eater trimmer. I guess companies will share similar machine designs and make modifications to it to make them unique. Such as Ryobi, Homelite, and Redmax using the same leaf blower design
Yes I believe you are right. There doesn't seem to be any real innovations in design anymore.
Never would have seen the tiny torx screw - thanks.
no problem.
Hell yeah I’d tackle this repair lol
thank you Mason Allord.
In the process of doing it now. Thanks for the video
good luck let me know how it goes
Thank you very much very helpful, questcan can you use a regular gas into trimmers or need a special sort of gas. thanks
on most gasoline trimmers, they need gasoline mixed with 2 stroke oil. Otherwise you can buy premixed fuel from the store.
@@HomeGaragechannel Great thanks for your helpful!!
I had the same model I got it of trade me an it did not go I talk it apart check how it works
Graciasasido de buena ayuda
No hay problema
Thanks. Only information I could find on how to get to the pull rope.
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
i would tackle the repair for sure no worries mate
you and me both
@@HomeGaragechannel yes indeed
Could you please tell us what kind of screwdriver we need to remove the clutch drum screw ? You mentioned it’s Torx but what size and where I can find that special screwdriver ?
I don't mention it because they may not be the same on yours. I think I used a T20 tho.
@@HomeGaragechannel T25
Mine is the same problem, but the model # is BL110.
My problem right now is “Can not remove the cover(Yellow cover) to go inside repair rewind strings?
If you know anything about this model is great help.
Thank you…
how many of the screws have you removed?
if you ever happen to get rid of that weedeater or throw it away is it possible i could get the yellow motor housing im a huge fan of those and trying to collect them they are also not made that way any longer.
If the situation comes up you'll be the first to know. Thank you for the comment.
I appreciate your video bro, but how did you get the cord back out of the combustion chamber? Mines stuck!!
turn the engine slightly, that should give you enough room to pull the rope out.
I just wanted to say thanks for the video. i followed your advice, all except the string in the spark plug. I use 5/16' long handle L-wrench. all in all, thumbs up.
Here's a quick story, b4 I found your video. I told me wife, Aye Babe, I gotta go buy another weed eater mine just bit the dust. After she looked at the prices. She said, they were too expensive. So she proposed, I buy me another weed eater and she would go buy herself a pair of shoes. I said, Kool. After a couple minutes of thinking about what she said. I went back and said, Aye Babe don't worry, I fix my weed eater and just go buy me a 6-pack. She laughed, and said, yeah I thought so.
Thanks again.
Awesome story. Thanks for sharing.
Ive been searching for info on taking this thing apart, this was the missing link, thank you, would you happen to know , or how to find out, the ignition coil specs on this? I got it with broken fuel lines and after fixing that i got no spark,
thanks and unfortunately no I don't know where to find it. if it were me, I would disconnecting the small wiring going to the ignition coil, to basically unground it, and then test for spark. if you don't get anything, then I would re-gap the coil to the flywheel using a standard business card to set the air gap.
@@HomeGaragechannel thank you and i will try that, the issue is the machine was owned by an elderly friend that used it once then it sat untouched for a few years, it seems unlikely to me that a component or adjustment would go like that, but this is not my area of expertise
@@danb316 no problem
Mine does the same thing but when i wind the spring it only goes so far and than sounds like it slips, and than won't retract at all does that mean the spring is broken?
first question is, are you turning the spring the right direction. The second question, is the end of the spring catching on the spots on the recoil?
I've done this repair on one of these type trimmers. Probably wouldn't do it again...lol
I have the same feeling. Thanks Alan Marshall.
Doing this repair now
Good luck Shawn McKellar
I replaced the pulley recoil springs and the rope pull assembly. The rope won’t pull after input it all back together. Piston isn’t seized
how many turns did you put on the spring?
I would do it myself ever since I was getting paid to do that sort of work about 20 years ago !
You're quite the experienced tech then. Thank for the comment I appreciate it.
this is good at list you teach me how too fix?
unfortunately no
I’m having a problem wonder if any body has a solution so I did everything that is in the video pull string works fine but as soon as I put the clutch on and tighten it the pull string acts like it won’t come out then it’s just stuck hanging out again. It turns the engine over fine it’s just soon as I tighten the clutch up
there must be something interfering with how it's working. Other than that, I'd have to see the machine
@@HomeGaragechannel I figured it out I was missing the metal sleeve that goes over the shaft that the washer and clutch sits on
I would tackle this repair because I’m going to have to I have a Pulan pro in need of some recoil work
Let me know if you run into any problems
Home Garage sure
Home Garage well I finished the job it turned out that it also had no spark due to faulty wiring but I fixed the recoil and lubed it up while It was all apart. After that I rebuilt the carb/ new fuel lines and a good cleaning. It has great compression still and it fired right up!
@@jonathankuhn7837 excellent work. Thank you for the update
It's funny no matter what weed wacker you buy these days, they all have pretty much same motor ..some have the clutch in the back tho
Thanks for the comment.
Is it possible to fix a clutch that fell apart
it depends on how It fell apart. Are the two metal parts intact and what about the spring?
After watching this video I would buy a different model that has the starter pulley on the back!
yes and the main reason I think a fully support crank is just a better made machine.
Mine keeps getting stuck but I mess with it and it retracts back in but after I mess with it, it goes and retracts fine but after a while it happens again after about 20 pulls I got a bolen bl110
you need to replace or service the spring.
@@HomeGaragechannel idk how to get to it on one of these I just got it and it's my 1st one I have ever worked on
@@jasonjr2500 is yours the same model as in the video?
@@HomeGaragechannel no it's a bolen bl110 that fell in middle of the road and we didnt want anyone hit it
@@jasonjr2500 unfortunately I don't video of a bolens spring repair
I just bought new spring and put in mine instead of rewinding it. It's too time consuming I needed a nap

I would be so frustrated to try to put that back together
Yes I wasn't happy that happened either. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Pull rope wont retract on my new low end Bohlen's grass trimmer on only its second use. Had to pull it alot but it worked even with older fuel.
Wow that's terrible news. Are you going to fix the rope?
@@HomeGaragechannel I was pressed for time, so I will definitely have to give it a go this weekend. From watching your video, it still seems fixable.
Its doable. Good luck
@@HomeGaragechannel ...I just tried fixing it. My setup is worse than the one in the video. Even after removing the screws, you can't separate the spring head from the engine. After reading some online reviews this is a common problem with this model. I may do something else in the short term while I look at small engine places that will have the time to disassemble it and possibly wait for parts. While I got the cord to retract the retraction isn't smooth at all and the cord bunches up when going for it.
@@potomakmeadows8864 sorry to hear that
i would repair this issue no problem etc cheers from Australia
thank you Patrick Stapleton
@@HomeGaragechannel no worries mate cheers from Australia
What size torx bit?
I think it's a t25
You wouldn’t have a video on removing the string bump feeder mechanism on this actual model?
Unfortunately no
I just need to know if it’s righty tighty or lefty loosie hahhhaahah But thanks for reply !
@@Alfsp1 i find them reverse thread sometimes so it just depends on who makes it.
As Gomer Pyle would say "Surprise Surprise Surprise".
it was one heck of a surprise
I will need time more to it than I thought
Yes take as much time as needed
I be put a new spring on mine and put it back together and the rope won’t pull and I can’t find any help on you tube.
how many turns did you put on the spring? if you put to many turns on it, The recoil will not move because the spring is already bound up.
It be pulls until i put it back on the motor
@@HomeGaragechannel maybe 2 or 3 times
What if the string is seized
Then the spring is probably the problem. It. Also have you taken out the spark plug and tried pulling the rope?
this is like a homeowners unit?
yes most definitely
Jeez that would of scared me too
My reflexes are so bad that I didn't react that much. Thanks for the comment.
Man. Usually when you Poulan the rope it retracts, guess not on this one!
i'am doing it
good luck
recoils springs and i don't get along plus i'm an old man with little patients for the spring.
I understand your concerns, and no, the springs don't care for anyone else either
What is wrong with this pull rope? 0:09
I took the retaining ring off not realizing what could happen. The spring exploded throwing the assembly out of the cover.
I probably do this quite frequently my hyper tough had this problem and I fixed it for 30 bucks and only had probably two hours on it when it broke
Thats interesting. I've never worked on a hyper tough trimmer before
Home Garage Keep making great videos
@@sergeipepper7213 thank you I appreciate it
let someone do it. but I will try it thanks to you
I understand
my Remington only cost $97.86 after tax. so i would try this thinking that a shop would be justified in charging $65... and i's poor folk, LOL! i do hate that clutch situation on this Poulan! i fear it's the same on my Remington damn it!
that's a shame but at least you're aware of it.
First time I had to come back to a video for help instead of entertainment I replaced a coil and when I went to pull the engine the rope broke
sorry to hear that happened and thanks for watching this video again.
Any idea where the muffler screen is?
it's built into the muffler.
@@HomeGaragechannel so no removing it?
I don't think so.
I hate fixing pull ropes I threw one of my free trimmers away because the rope broke and it was a half crank engine
I totally understand.
Home Garage it was a WeedEater Featherlite plus curved shaft just had to put fuel lines on it runned decent until it got harder to start then when trying to start pull rope snapped in half in just a few days of ownership I took it apart determined it was not worth my time to fix it then I took the carb apart and the screen was all a sudden gunked up with debris but I used a fuel filter
I gotcha. Since it was gummed up and you did the fuel lines did you confirm that the fuel lines weren't backwards?
Home Garage actually that is a very good question I noticed when I try to prime it on the floor it didi’nt really want to work but if I hold it and tip it upwards towards me and try to prime it it works good could of sworn I did it correctly or else wouldn’t it not run?
It depends how much line you left for the return line. If was long enough it could suck up gas if the line was where the fuel filter line was supposed to go Instead
Mine just did this after I had replaced the carb. Time to cut my losses and buy a battery powered unit.
i don't blame you. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Ok, I gave it another shot. Followed your process step by step and it ended it up being the exact same issue with the end of the spring on the wrong side of the housing. It’s now fixed thanks to you my friend.
@@olben1095 no problem and good work fixing it.

Ah yes, poulan pro, the complete ripoff of mcculloch, I used to have a McCulloch M T255 CLS, the counterpart to this poulan pro model, and it NEVER failed me, I used to use it to mow my entire lawn before I bought my first lawn mower back over a decade ago, it was a pain in the arse to mow my entire lawn using only a trimmer and rake but it got the job done!

Well I'm biased. I'v watched hundreds if videos, and I'v rebuild about 14 machines of different brand names. It's crazy how people in my city throw these machines away the second they stop working.
I think it's any issue of convenience. if it's tough to start, toss it get a new one.
@@HomeGaragechannel That seems to be the way of thinking. There are lots of well off people in my neighborhood. I'v found so many machines that just needed new gas lines and a carb clean up, that's not even funny. I normally rebuild them and give them away to kids that want to make a little money for a summer job.
@@msamour that's pretty cool of you.
What would a repair like this cost?
If it was my shop it would have been about $75. At a big repair place, and if they even decided to take it in for the job, I would guess about $125.
If it was my machine I'd fix it myself...a certified small engine shop would charge you an arm and a leg for labour, might as well sell it for parts and buy a new one....with the recoil on the back!!!
Oh yeah they charge a lot and most shops won't even touch it because it's not a commercial unit.
@@HomeGaragechannel very true
