A couple things to consider when temps may be below freezing in the morning… Open your shoe laces up wide so if they freeze, you can still easily get your feet in. Carry a plastic grocery bag or produce bag to put your shoes in and keep them in your sleeping bag or under your quilt. (Along with your filter, water, batteries, etc. 😂)
If you put everything you should in your bag when it's effing freezing, there'd be no room for you. So it becomes choice time, batteries, socks, shoes water? If I don't have water for hot morning coffee, well, it won't be pretty.
@@bradorndorff7408 April, May, June, July, August, September -- about 6. Katadin often closes very early October maybe even October 1st. You certainly won't get 7 full months if you start April 1st.
“Free Spirit”…I don’t know if you already have a trail name, but if not I suggest this name for you! You have a rare bohemian authenticity, and a calm positive strength that is infectious. I have no doubts that you will make it to Mama K! Thank you for letting us share in your journey. 😊
You are absolutely killing it, K!!! I felt pretty bad for your wake up and frozen shoes, but true to form, you got up and got it done! You are a joy to follow. Keep hustling. 100 miles down 😁😁😁
Binged the day 2 through 7 without comments but just wanted to give you 👍 and thank you for the vids! Pretty awesome to be following along on this adventure!
Throttle ~ Lady you're amazing! Another wonderful video with such beauty, positivity, grace and joy! I love watching your videos because you are so aware and appreciative of everything from small to big and for the people old and new in your life! Thank you for taking us along on your journey! I pray for you daily!
I don't know if you watch Scott Benerofe but he's SOBO and I think he started in December. He's got some gorgeous winter footage you might enjoy. Hoping today is better and hat you thoroughly enjoy your break!
Great going KNA You are doing so well. You might try setting up tent inside shelter on cold wet night. Have to rig it up with stakes in board cracks, etc. I think tent is always warmer than shelter and with tent in shelter you will not have snow or rain on you. Of course you have to be polite with taking up room if others are there. Bluestem NOBO 2017
You truly are an inspiration. Your smile is contagious. Thank you for taking me on your amazing journey. I will be cheering you on all the way to Katharine!!!
Binge watching your videos…wishing you the best and praying you stay safe. Love your sweet demeanor and determination! Been section hiking the AT for a few years. Hoping to do what you are doing in the future. Stay strong…❤️
Your videos are beautifully raw and your narration is as if you are on a walk in the park. But it is FREEZING outside. Your hike is amazing! The trail was there and you came to it. It is now day seven and you are 100 miles in. Very impressive.
I just binged watched your first week and I love your energy!! Doing a thru hike is something I would love to do, but with a couple autoimmune diseases is probably not something I'll ever actu;be able to do. So I'm looking forward to following along with you! 😊
You are doing awesome. My husband and I just binge watched all your videos and they are great. You have guts starting this early with the cold. You are crushing the miles.
Moving right along.. Looks very cold, but your smile and soul should melt away any objects that might be in your way! .. Congrats on the 100 mile milestone. Stay warm tonight, and we'll see you tomorrow. 🥰🖤
Wow the trail looked amazing all iced over. Looked like a cold one. On cold nights I tuck my shoes under my tent with the foot opening facing in towards me...I've done this down to 15 degrees and works well or maybe try putting them in a bag inside the tent. Looks like a nice shelter area. Enjoy the town stay. Congrats on 100 miles!
You're doing awesome; keep it up! It's striking how quiet your journey has been along the trail. Seems like you're not running across many other hikers. Would love to do this hike, but not sure my middle aged body could endure this hike of attrition. Would love to do it as part of a group.
When camping in winter conditions I always keep my boots with me in my sleeping bag when I go to bed. This keeps them warm. Often times I'll sleep in all my clothes when it's very cold and a minus 5 or 10 degree bag isn't enough.
When you get near Gatlinburg if you need anything holler at me, I can take you for resupply or anything needed. We could even grab some food. Truly enjoying your journey
So that explains how you hop on the AT and start knocking out huge mile days. Training in Linville Gorge trail will shape you up to handle anything on the AT. :-)
keep on rocking it, i look forward to your videos, the only other thru hiker im following is sobo winter through hike, he made it through maine nh and into vt. you two will cross paths at some point im guessing va. frozen shoes are a pain in the cold you learn to pull them wide open at the end of the day just in case
I wonder if it might be a good idea to put your shoes in a water proof bag and keep them in your sleeping bag. They won't dry off but they won't freeze either.
Loving your videos so far! There are times when I struggle to hear you speaking, but I think it's hard to use your "outdoor" voice when you are alone out there isn't it? I wonder how people walk and talk to themselves and I *know* they're doing a video! haha Continued good luck out there!
You are perfect for the AT. I will be starting Mar 2 and hope to catch up to you. 1) AVOID Frozen Shoes: get 2 small trash bags, put your shoes in em and put in bottom of your sleeping bag (along with any left over hand/toe warmers) 2) Buy hand and toe warmers next resupply Be well, Buddha
Following your journey. Beautiful Scenery. However, to step up your game I think you may have to invest in a better mic for recording your gentle voice. Hard to hear what you are saying, and you have a lovely voice😊

Lovely morning frost.
👍you’re doing great. Thanks for sharing
When I go in really cold weather, I take some 10 hour heat packs to throw down in my shoes. You are doing great!

You crushed Standing Indian Mt. Congrats. Only 16 days until I can start trying to catch up to you. Lazarus
Sending you 💙 and ☕! 👊🏻
You are a beast!
100 Miles down. Huge accomplishment. Enjoy your time in the hostel.
I wonder if it might be a good idea to put your shoes in a water proof bag and keep them in your sleeping bag. They won't dry off but they won't freeze either.
Make sure you open your shoes as much as possible before you bed down for the night, it will help in the morning.

Keep shoes in pack (pack inside shelter )
Or face down in a bag
Big milestone 🙌 🙏
Damn that looks cold.
How are you editing your videos while on trail?

I'm so baked rn that I'm going to give you another view later.
Hope you are building a fire at night! Helps a bunch.
