    Thanks! That clarified a lot about the relation between ellipses and their foci.

    And the Irish accent makes it pleasant to listen too! 😁👍
    Now I'm going to go lay out the ellipse that will be bronze portlights for my boat!

    Go raibh maith agat!
    I am starting to paint exoplanets of other star systems with oil paint.
    And on one gas giant I want to ad some rings.
    Only I want it to be clean, with the right proportions.
    I have a compas.
    But I never tried it with the strings.
    So I was wondering if one could make a nice ellipse with a compas knowing some formula.
    Any idea?
    Sláinte :)

    But how do you determine the focal points?

    • @Troy-Moses
      @Troy-Moses Год назад

      If you haven't already found out, do it this way: The major axis is the length of the string, so set your compass to half the major axis. Place the pin of your compass at the end of the minor axis, then draw an arc intersecting the line of the major; do this on both sides. Your foci are where the arcs intersect the major axis.
