The thing I ADORE about Stranger Things is that it introduces newer generations like me to 80s hits like this one and it always manages to be the one song I listen to for months on end and never get bored of it

Lol, took me 3 years to talk my daughter into trying Stranger Things and now, of course, she’s obsessed. In early 2019 I played Running Up That Hill for her because some of the music she was listening to at the time kind of reminded me of it. Back then, she wasn’t feeling it, said it felt kind of “old” to her. But the minute it became Max’s song, she was hooked, plays it all the time. I love that. Mom for the win, lol. It just took the Duffer Bros to encourage it along.

As a Jamaican person; this makes me so so happy seeing others enjoying it :)) for anyone who doesn’t know, dutchie is a dish in Jamaica, often shared with friends or family . this song represents sharing food with others out of kindness- which is what we want to spread in Jamaica 🇯🇲.

    Lyrics: This generation
    Rules the nation
    With version
Music happens to be the food of love
Sounds to really make you rub and scrub
    I say
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
It a go bun (give me the music, make me jump and prance)
It a go dung, ya know? (Give me the music, make me rockin' at the dance)
It was a cool and lonely breezy afternoon
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
You could feel it 'cause it was the month of June
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
So I left my gate and went out for a walk
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
As I pass the dreadlocks camp, I heard them say
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side (I say)
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
It a go bun (give me the music, make me jump and prance)
It a go dung, ya know? (Give me the music, make me rockin' at the dance)
So I stopped to find out what was going on
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
'Cause the spirit of Jah, you know he leads you on
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
There was a ring of dreads and a session was there in swing
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
You could feel the chills as I seen and heard them say
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side (I say)
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
It a go bun (give me the music, make me jump and prance)
It a go dung, ya know? (Give me the music, make me rockin' at the dance)
Now me say, listen to the drummer, me say listen to the bass
Give me a little music, make me wind up me waist
Me say listen to the drummer, me say listen to the bass
Give me a little music, make me wind up me waist, I say
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side (I say)
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
It a go bun (give me the music, make me jump and prance)
It a go dung, ya know? (Give me the music, make me rockin' at the dance)
You play it on the radio
And so me say, we a go hear it on the stereo (stereo)
And so me know we a go play it on the disco
And so me say we a go hear it on the stereo, whoa
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side (I say)
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
It a go bun (give me the music, make me jump and prance)
It a go dung, ya know? (Give me the music, make me rockin' at the dance)
On the left hand side (I say)
On the left hand side (I say)
On the left hand side (idiot)
On the left hand side (feel it)
    On the left hand side
And I say east, say west, say north and south
This is gonna really make us jump and shout
And I say east, say west, say north and south
This is gonna really make us jump and shout
    I say.

to those wondering why it was changed: The song was the band's first release on a major label. Following a shouted intro taken from U Roy's "Rule the Nation" with words slightly altered, the track combined two songs: "Gimme the Music" by U Brown, and "Pass the Kouchie" by Mighty Diamonds, which deals with the recreational use of cannabis (kouchie being slang for a cannabis pipe). For the cover version, the song's title was bowdlerised to "Pass the Dutchie", the new word being a patois term for a Dutch oven, a type of cooking pot. All obvious drug references were removed from the lyrics; e.g., instead of the original "How does it feel when you got no herb?", the cover version refers to "food" instead. The song was commissioned by the record company to turn "Pass the Kouchie" into a radio friendly hit for a wider audience. Tony Owens came up with the modified lyrics after coming home one night on an empty stomach.

(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
Cause the spirit of Jah, you know he leads you on
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
There was a ring of dreads and a session was there in swing
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
You could feel the chill as I seen and heard them say
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
    [Chorus]
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
It a go bun, give me the music, make me jump and prance
It a go dung, give me the music, make me rockin' at the dance
    (Jah know!)
    [Bridge 1]
Now me say listen to the drummer, me say listen to the bass
Give me little music make me wind up me waist
Me say listen to the drummer, me say listen to the bass
Give me little music make me wind up me waist, I say
    [Chorus]
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
It a go bun, give me the music, make me jump and prance
It a go dung, give me the music, make me rockin' at the dance
    (Jah know!)
    [Bridge 2]
You play it on the radio
And so me say, we a go hear it on the stereo
And so me know you a go play it on the disco
And so me say, we a go hear it on the stereo
    [Chorus]
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
Pass the Dutchie 'pon the left hand side
It a go bun, give me the music, make me jump and prance
It a go dung, give me the music, make me rockin' at the dance
    (Jah know!)
    [Outro]
I say east, say west, say north and south
This is gonna really make us jump and shout
