    This is YOUR BEST video. Not only because of the advice and the bare facts that you have touched upon, but also because I happen to be among the many creators who closely relate to the people mentioned by you in this classic piece.
    I've always been following your vids as one creator who knows that his content is good (or above average), who has been constantly focusing on improving the quality of work, but one whose only problem seems to be 'not reaching' the right audience. I spend as much of my time listening to successful YT creators as I do in conceptualizing and creating my own stuff.
    But one thing is for sure. I'm not gonna give up, and it's people on YT like YOU who keep fueling my energy/passion/willpower.
    So, a BIG thanks for this advice Nick.

    I just loved this, Nick. I got chills when you were talking about making a difference in someone’s life through making videos and it really hits home. When I get comments saying Ive helped someone find the motivation to try something new because they saw me do it, or I helped them through a bad day, it gets me really choked up. It’s something I wasn’t expecting when I started my channel last year, but it’s one of my favorite parts, honestly. It really makes me see how important and helpful our videos can be. And here I am, watching you, so you are helping my subscribers too, by helping me. It’s a never ending cycle. I watch you and Nate and take a lot of your advice. Thanks so much for helping me navigate this new path.

    One of the things that I discovered along the way was that I needed to enjoy making the content.
    I abandoned a channel earlier this year with a little over 4K subs and started a new channel because I realized I did not enjoy making the content.
    Today, I am happier and more excited to create content on my new channel.

  • @LearningandTechnology
    @LearningandTechnology 10 месяцев назад +10

    Persistence of passion is often promoted as the goal of being a Creator. There’s some validity in that, but you’ve really highlighted that maybe the pursuit of learning and just getting incrementally better is a way to have a bit less pressure and a lot more results.
    While I haven’t ever wanted to quit - I have felt discouraged. My key is to turn things around and tell myself “wow! There’s an entire platform that lets me practice creating and lets me share it with the world - how cool is that?”
    It’s pretty amazing when you think about it. I’m old enough to remember a time before RUclips - when the idea of just being able to create was full of obstacles. Now, the world can see your work.

    Great video Nick! I remember at Vidsummit when you said "this is REAL" -- it gave me chills! This is absolutely real and it's incredibly life changing. I also love how you explained the "data" versus "opinions" model. I think that going down the rabbit hole of blaming RUclips for your lack of success is dangerous because it takes power away from you as a creator. You have total power when it comes to being successful on RUclips. If you're not getting views, engagement, etc. there is something that is not working that you have the power to change. I appreciate you and your content so much. Sending a hug from Canada your way!

    this was really helpful! one of the things that resonated with me about youtube is its ability for creators to use their creative expression, which you can make literally anything as long as you obey the guidelines and such. I think many people nowadays just look at youtube for the monetization, as for me I like how being able to create something resonates with me more as well as having my channel stand on its own two legs and be visited by people like a shop or something or a museum even if I'm not monetized yet

  • @TherapistTamaraHill
    @TherapistTamaraHill 9 месяцев назад +2

    Just found this in passing and wanted to commend you on a job well done in this video. I started my RUclips channel about 4 to 6 years ago and you were the number one influence to build my channel. Over time I began to take the comments on my channel seriously and most of the comments were about my authenticity as a psychotherapist , my relatability, and my natural personality.
    It wasn't 100% the knowledge that I brought to my channel but a combination of that knowledge with humility, personality, and as you stated authenticity. I've been able to grow a channel well over 54,000 subscribers in a short time because of this. And during every live chat, I have come to relate to my audience as if we know each other and tons of them tell me I feel like their personal therapist. That's what RUclips is all about and I appreciate you for pointing that out!

  • @derryXDINES
    @derryXDINES 10 месяцев назад +4

    This is really well done, Nick. From being in every one of your live streams since January 2021 (and sporadically before), aside from the amazing community, one thing I have picked up is that RUclips fundamentally doesn't work the way I became accustomed to social media through the friendster, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter days. All social media now relies on recommendation algorithms which behave differently per platform, but the advantage to RUclips (besides monetization opportunities) is that through data, they disclose and present everything. No social media platform comes close. So while RUclips can be "shooting in the dark", it also can be highly strategized and even gamified. That's powerful for the reasons you have here.

    Hi Nick, this is probably one of your best videos lately. I admire your hounesty and the guts to show your vulnerability in terms of burning out. A burnout really sucks indeed, had it once during my job (I was self employed in construction business) and started crying out of the blue during work and suffered from random panic attacks. I learned from that and got out stronger than ever.
    You told us it took you at least 5 months to get 150 subscribers, and still you kept going on. Look where you are right now, almost 1 million subscribers, which is absolutely mental and even to me as a wee hobby channel, you're a big inspiration to keep improving and learning things. Thanks for that mate and keep up the good work you're doing. Cheers Eckie

    I am sooo glad I "stumbled" onto your channel this morning. I needed to see this. I''m an older mom of three. I had been a touring musician most of my life. I was writing a family comedy music show for theaters, when our kids got really sick. We could no longer travel and we rarely left the house. Life as we had known has been forever changed. Fast forward several years later, kids are better but regular touring is still not the best idea. So, the family has spent last year building and setting up a studio, mostly focusing on audio because we are musicians, but also planning to start creating videos, both music and comedy, (my husband is a comedian and the kids are much like him). My biggest hope, other than the obvious making a living, is to provide clean content for families. I think I would love it if someday I find put that we encourage some other family out there that is stuck at home dealing with an illness. That we give them relief and help them laugh and find joy in spite of the challenges. Now back to work I go as I continue figuring out all this social media and creator stuff. God bless you and thank you.

    That is very true. I had a car accident 10yrs ago, that destroyed my professional life and severely affected my personal life. Until I came across a RUclipsr making video about hobby. That had a cascading effect. I learned to 3D print, then CAD design and Digital Sculpting. Now I just made the jump into having my own channel to promote my product.
    It has given me a second lease in life with a healthy hobby that I am hoping to turn into a new professional path. Went from wishing to have died in that car accident to hope of having an income again, a purpose and the beauty of that….a hobby outlet so I don’t feel like a useless bag of meat.

Resurrected my old gaming channel from 51 subs to now 589 subs over 1yr 3 month window. Keeping it real, use community posts regularly. Interacting with subs. Using playlists, pinning comments, knowing that my videos help people each week.

    Thank you so much for this information, Nick! I found this to be motivating in a way. There was an area with your video, where you talked about how someone suffering from a certain mental health condition, watching videos that have to do with that, usually help them in the long run - I could connect with that, and I'll explain
    So, I have this one video on my channel, about one character who helps another character through a mental health condition they're going through (It's my latest video on my channel and it's been over 3 months since I uploaded it). I literally had one person come onto my video, and talk about how they were going through the same thing, and how watching my video helped them feel a little better. After reading their comment, I felt so good about that one video, and I was very happy that I could make someone's day with it.
    I'm going to watch this video as often as I can, because I want to focus on getting back onto my feet, and creating videos for my audience.

    Hi Nick! Glad this popped up in my feed so I could stop by and thank you again. A few years ago when I was considering quitting YT, you took the time to encourage me ... as did a couple of people among my then-small audience.
    I'm still a relatively small channel but I have realized some of the benefits you mention in this video: I would never have dreamed 3 years ago that, at 72, I'd become an "influence marketer," even though I have related sales experience! I now field collaboration requests weekly and have established a number of affiliate relationships.
    This video condenses a lot of what you've said over the years -- great job! The biggest takeaway that can't be repeated enough is that it all takes an extraordinary amount of work and perseverance -- there are NO shortcuts. But if one is willing to keep at it (and a passion for one's chosen niche is critical), then good things will follow. And, yes, it's great to help others. You represent that ideal.

    Thank you for some of the specific things you've said as they've made a big difference for me and I'm sure others. Sometimes it seems like the platform is too saturated already or there is no point to be one more person saying things similar to other people. I've started a few channels. Some never gained subscribers, a few have but 2 have not made it to 1,000 subs yet. One has but I am not sure where to go with it. I've wondered if I should even bother at all. But you said some things here that helped a spark flicker back to life.

Ah well I didn't start the channel for money but it sure would help me maintain the hobby!

    Wow man! Nick! While unrelated to my channel I do struggle with mental health sometimes (outside RUclips) and this helps me “cope” I just never saw it from this other side that it could unlock something and help someone else to with what I’m doing here
    Wow man…thanks for this

      I’m glad that stood out for you. Our videos impact others in a lot of ways that go unnoticed until someone brings it to our attention. Some of the emails I have received and some of the conversations I’ve had with viewers at conferences have my eyes water. Every person watching is living a different life and going through different things so sometimes, the right message at the right time can snap someone out of a dark place.

    Nick, I got so much out of this one video! I am a new RUclipsr/Content Creator, and it took me several months to put myself in front of the camera and then another month to actually put the content out there. You are so right in regards to the videos out there that make grandiose promises. You can, and I have gone down the RUclips rabbit hole watching some of those people just to realize they are selling a web site or web tool or service. I know I will not be an overnight success on RUclips, however I am hoping to provide some good quality content at some point. Thank you. "Grampy"

    I knew absolutely nothing when I started out, now I know how to edit, use photoshop, how to use a green screen well, setup audio equipment and configure microphones and streaming software. It takes time but it’s nice once you figure out things along the way. Hardest part I find is figuring out how to improve on-camera presence and delivery especially if you’re not a natural public speaker.

    • @NickNimmin
      @NickNimmin  10 месяцев назад +2

      For presenting, unless you’re doing the news or something like that you can just be yourself. But, pay close attention to the fluctuations in your voice unless you want to be perceived as monotone. Pay attention to the space in between your words and the cadence of speech. Get comfortable with pausing (I’m working more on pausing too). It seems to be all about being mindful of the nuances.

I'm approaching the 100 video mark on my channel and I still have less than 500 subscribers. I fully recognize that RUclips is not to blame. I appreciate the reminder that our videos can be impactful and floored at your specific example given- it just so happens that my videos are for helping those with depression (and anxiety, as well as bipolar disorder.) So I often think of each video as the possibility of delivering HOPE in what feels like a hopeless situation. Nick Nimmin.. RUclips should show our videos to everyone. Lets say they only show it to some people or even half and those people or that half doesn't like the video, then RUclips stops pushing out the video. Well what if the other people or the other half would absolutely love the video? We would never know because RUclips stopped pushing the video out to new people. Thanks for this video brother.

    • @NickNimmin
      @NickNimmin  10 месяцев назад +1

      RUclips doesn't stop testing your videos to find the right audience. If they are testing with your core audience first and they don't respond, then that says something about the content missing the mark, whether the video is off-topic to what they typically get from you or the topic, packaging, and/or the video itself missed the mark somewhere. If the audience for a video is adjacent to your typical audience, it might take RUclips a little longer to test and figure that out.

    Hey, whoever is reading. Yes, it gets messy and dark. Sometimes it piles up. Sometimes it feels like there is no way out. But… it’s possible. It’s gradual. It’s small things done semi regularly first. Then chain reaction starts. Then some lapses & relapses, but, you have some fresh air & joy. I’m not a shrink or prophet, but: 😂exercise, dancing, singing & content creating for that purpose lifted my spirit & rekindled fire in my soul . Go for it❤❤ even if it’s a baby crawl at the start😘

But I still love doing it. As everyone says, the secret is a constant commitment to improvement. There is a huge amount to learn. It can’t all be done at once.
