I usually do not thumbs up and comment on videos. This was very informative and helpful. I am about to add Hardie to an extension to the house and you were the first video to explain alternatives to mounting the bottom and why or when you would change that based in climate and conditions. Also you were the first out of many videos to explain nailing in depth to include type of nails to use. Cleared up a lot off questions I had. Thank you sir😊
About 30 years ago I was having Hardie installed in Springfield, Mass and the installer used a pneumatic guillotine that cut instantly with a push of a button. No dust, no mask required. I have cut a lot using my small, water cooled circular saw with a diamond blade. Cut easily and no dust so no mask. A little messy because of the water but the saw has a valve so the water can be turned off when not cutting.
Hi, Andrew! You and your Dad work well together. You are always very helpful by passing along all the tips to build the project correctly, sturdy, and look great.
8 1/4 minus 1 1/4 overlap is a 7” reveal not 6. It’s helpful to have a story pole or be proficient with a tape when staring your first course on both sides of a wide opening like a garage door. I’ve installed this on numerous homes and my personal preference is to have a 5/4x8” starter at the bottom with x flashing. Looks good
Were you running a 7 1/4” blade on a 10” miter saw. I’m ready to do some siding and would rather use a chop saw but haven’t seen a 10” siding blade. Also, a too late tip, but since you were flexible on your start level, use the course over the door trim to drive your start level. No more cutout above the door and a clean line all the way across the top.
It's traditional framed. You need to hit as many studs as possible, you are allowed to nail into the OSB in a few spots. The ends of the cement board must be nailed into a stud to keep the joints from flexing out.
HELP! Great video! My husband and I have built a cute shed and are trying to install decorative scalloped shaped fiber cement under the gable. Does this require a starter strip first so you don’t see the paper wrap? Does it matter where you start? Do you only nail at the top? We are using shears to cut. The angle cuts are more challenging and the pieces appear brittle. Hope you can help! Thank you 😊
You only nail the top so the overlapping piece covers the nails. You overlap the pieces by an inch and a quarter, they make special gauges to make this process easy. You always start at the bottom and work up. The starter strip is so the bottom piece has the flare or kick out to match all of the other pieces that you'll install. I haven't found the starter strip to be critical.
Thank you for the video. I’m looking for the color you have but I can’t seem to find it, even on their website. Do you remember what the name of the color was? Thank you
My last siding repair contractor refused to use Hardiebord stating it was not possible to install without it cracking. Then his idiot employee then tore all the insulation out of my wall. I'll do all my repairs from now on.
@@TKCL Absolutely, his crew couldn't even put a single piece of wood on my house with issues. No wonder cement fiberboard was too much for them to handle.
Yamaa bra, love the content but i can't watch any vlogs with James Hardie FC in it, I'm from Australia and that stuff killed 1000's and is still killing 100's of Australians each year (asbestos), Bore Bore (til next time in my language)
Great vid. No time wasted watching stuff I'm not interested in, just the facts and all the facts about siding. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Dude! You are the first one to say no 1 1/4" starter strip. Im doing a whole house soon with the first board already flat. nice to see...
Hardi does recommend the starter strip, but I've always been fine without it.
I bet your Dad is glad you know how to do all these things so you could help him get his workshop done.
He is very happy. I've learned a lot from him.

Cash 1st again😢Andrew another great video, I see Ruger is supervising again.
Another great How To! I hope the weather wasn't too bad for you, I saw some parts over there were really nasty, God help!
We just had really bad winds and power outages here yesterday. Hardly any rain..
@@TKCL I hope nothing was damaged and you're well. As for the power outages, no worry for you😊
We are well, thanks!
Wow! An actually useful video. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great vid, really helpful tips

looking good boss!
Thank you for watching
I think the reason you would do the starter strip is for a proper drip edge at the bottom. Secondary is to match the kick out.
This hangs below the sheathing and the backside is painted. I'm not concerned about the final drip, but I see what you mean.
Interesting that I'm seeing a color variation on siding pieces. Is there a drip edge recommended to be installed above windows and doors?
Informative... 🙂
Please explanation on corners
Do we need an airgap between the house wrap and the hardie board? I am using this to underpin a mobile home with just studs

They offer this in three different sizes. Mine is 7 1/4 overall which is the most common size sold at the big box stores.

Nope, I run the correct size blades on all my saws.
Is that a pole barn? Did you just nail in to the osb
Im looking to.do the same and couldnt find any videos on if thats ok to do

Thank you for the video. I’m looking for the color you have but I can’t seem to find it, even on their website. Do you remember what the name of the color was? Thank you
That's not paint, it's the factory primer.
Seems like flashing or something is needed to get the water off the garage door trim
That would be a good idea.
What do you do when the home or wall is not level?.
You nail your first piece on the bottom level, regardless of house being 'level" or not.
Andrew, will termites & carpenter bees go after the Hardie siding?
Negative, nothing eats that stuff. That's why homeowners insurance usually offers a discount of you use it.
On the top will it take a full strip all the time or are you going to rip one
Almost always rip one
@@TKCL does the rip one go on the top or bottom or does not matter, thanks
What about the corners?
Geico is the way to go no hammering required
you didn't install a 1 1/2" starter strip at the bottom. Doesn't Hardie recommend this?
Yes for the kickout, I personally don't find it necessary at all, I've explained it in a few of my videos.
how do you hide the nails in the very top piece of siding?
Use a Brad nailer and caulk the holes.
👍👍
What length nail do you use ?
2 1/2 inch ring shank Galvanized
what kind of nails did you use?
2 1/2 inch ring shank Galvanized.

It's my understanding it hasn't contained asbestos since the mid 80s.
