Zoo's mom here. They each had a back up pair at our house, so in time for Zoo's birthday, May 31, I packed Rachel's spare pair, along with birthday treats for everyone in their "tramily" (Trail family). They arrived in time at Mammoth Lakes so she didn't have to buy more. Thank you for watching, and being supportive.
Glad y'all had a solid detour into VVR. During drought years, you often have to walk a mile or more out to whatever water is left to catch the ferry. Also, every time I descend Bear Ridge to Quail Meadows I can only be grateful I'm not going up! 🤣
VVR is a great fishing lake. There are boat in camp sites sprinkled along the shore. Been going there since the 80’s. Surprised the lake level is that low for this time of year. Especially since last years 400% snow fall.
They haven't been allowed to fill the lake since at least 2015 due to worries about the integrity of the dam. Basically they will need to nearly drain the lake one year and repair the dam. I have no idea what the plans are.
Doing a section hike in Oregon first week of August. Between Callahans and Hwy 138 north of Crater. Not sure if it’ll work out but it’d be great to run into you and say hi. I’ll be staying one night at Fish Lake in a cabin and you are welcome to shower up if you want. (My effort for trail magic😂). You guys are killing it. 👍🏻
Whoa. $40.00!! Used to be free. New management! That cute red plant is a baby snow plant. They get about 8” tall. They are parasitic to the tree roots. Ps. The big tree, episodes before, was a Jeffrey pine not a ponderosa. VVR will see fewer hikers I imagine.
IDENTIFICATION red plant / 'flower' : "Snow plant has no chlorophyll; it derives nutrition from fungi underneath the soil, and for this reason the plant is called "mycotrophic". These fungi are the mycorrhizae ("fungus-roots") of conifers, an interesting topic by itself. Many conifers (among other plants) require these fungi to live normally."
I guess you were wrong about the Mavs. Kind of like your Bruins. But the BoSox aren’t doing too bad, at least not as bad as everyone thought. Go Dodgers.
Congrats on your two months! You guys are crushing it!
I think anyone doing the PCT should tune in to your channel.
Great to see those big smiles back. Hope Rach got some new micro spikes.😊

Having spent the last two summers in the High Sierra I get nostalgic. So beautiful. Glad you got to go to the VVR.
Cnoc refrigerator is so brilliant. Keep rocking those miles and following Reroute!
So glad I came across your channel. Giving me a little bit of confidence about the Sierras. Stay safe 🙏

The red plant was a snow plant or snow flower. It is just starting its seasonal growth and will get up to 12 inches tall.
They're now protected since they were picked into near extinction.
Interesting. Last July the ferry went right up to VVR. Water still low.

That "hill" is Bear Ridge 🙂 I think I counted somewhere around 50 switchbacks going down the north slope.
❤
I believe the yellow flower is Wallflower (Senecio) and the orange flower is Paintbrush (Castilleja)

The pink flower is Penstemmon

How long ago was it free? The 1980's? lol In 2017, the one year that I didn't hike in and back out, it was $12 under the previous owner.

it's called a snow plant and the stalks are eatable. prep them as you would asparagus!
Thank you! Edible cooked, or raw, also?
I don't believe you are supposed to pick them. I believe they may be a protected species now.
I expected a little bigger boat for a ferry🙂
DO IT DAN DONT BE A SQUARE LET RACHEL SHAVE YOUR HEAD!!!! 😂

Go Celtics! At least now, Margarita and Zoo can cheer on their respective teams, Mavs for Marg and the Celtics for Zoo!
Do you still have to do those 8 miles?
They aren't part of the PCT/JMT. It's a side trip to VVR.
