This anime is so underrated and annoyingly unpopular, it's frustrating that so few even know it exists. To watch this now after a decade brings back so many good memories...and bittersweet ones. Without looking it up, if memory serves me right the white haired girl is the direct descendant of the first boss of Millennia who is also the daughter of Brandon's love interest back when they were young and foolish. And if I recall further, all their friends (who appeared in the ending), died through accidents and being gunned down just before Harry took over and betrayed Brandon.
No matter how tough Harry came off he still loved his friend..man this ending always brings me to tears. And Harry got the chance to apologize for killing him. If only life was that easy.
***** I think the millenion guys will help her, maybe she'll just do like maria and live in one of the executive's mansion :P it's still her family cuz she is Big Daddy's daughter...
I feel like he did make it actually. He couldn't pull the trigger versus his best and probably only real friend. A friend who made him choose between family and him. His convictions were ingrained enough for him to setup a possibility of coming from beyond the grave, to keep protecting family, yet when he had the chance, to right a wrong, kill Harry, he realized he didn't have regrets. Everybody having closure in the end is much more poetic then what you can expect from life. It's infinatly sad, but it's better then what he got first time around.
My father handed me a stack of DVDs to watch and on a whim I did. That one random afternoon I just sat and fell in love with Gungrave and all it had to offer. It's criminally underrated, and nearly unheard of from what I've seen
This still might be the best Anime ending of all time. The entire last episode is so complex, unique and surprising. They were somehow able to pull it off without making the second half of the Anime felt like a waste of time.
The last two episodes of this series was the absolute greatest ending of any series I have seen mainly because it subverted our expectations. This anime played out kinda like berserk. You start off in the middle of the story tech then work your way back. Brandon and Harry were mafia Guts and Griffith. We were expecting to see Brandon get revenge on Harry for all hes done. But then you see Brandon didnt care about revenge, he just wanted to save his brother.
This show was just depressing all around. There were no winners and both of them lost everything along the way to the end. Only thing they had in the end was each other.

I'll have it in my head canon that the Harry that Brandon killed in the game was the idea of what he became not his best friend. I can picture the entirety of the last part of the first game going on in his head while he and Harry sat at the table in the anime.
This shows that Brandon, even though Harry killed him and was obsessed into "rising to the top", still wouldn't kill his best friend. That is until they decided to both commit suicide and enter the afterlife.
As a man this still hits hard. When revenge is empty and only full of forgiveness at the end. But this is not a fulfilling story unless you're into bittersweet endings.
Quiet, impactful, a few places and backgrounds a viewer can relate to. Less in numbers but strong characters... Whatever happened to the good old writers :(
.....Admittedly this is kind of undercut by the fact that they just bring Brandon/Grave back like 5 years later as apparently Gungrave Overdose is a sequel to the anime and not the original game.............and then they add a ghost who possess a electric guitar.............and Harry's wife comes back as a villain.........and that's not even the weird part.

Because thinking about it when brandon dies that is a bitter ending, when grave "dies" its happy now, he's reconciled with his friend and he's content with dying at his hands again but mutually. If I recall, he was one of Harry's best hired guns and was to go after Brandon. I can't remember if he worked with Brandon before, but I'm sure he was a badass who died with a cat or dog by his side.

It’s a real wonder that almost all videogames adaptation suck but somehow this one time they managed to create a masterpiece from a mediocre videogame. That series is such well written. I’ve probably watched it like 4 times and each view I see more details that make it even better. For example there’s one scene that didn’t strike me that much first but after second viewing I could see how it’s actually a brilliant piece of storytelling. It’s the scene when Harry sees a kid who gets bullied by the store owner he works for, so he kills the store owner. But instead of being grateful the kid cries and Harry gets mad. This scene gives such a smart and insightful hint on harry’s entire personality...

TGS 2019 says hello to your comment lmao
Still one of the most sentimental and touching scenes in the history of anime~
I want to see a remake but the original was so damn perfect
I want a remaster.. if i can get ultra 4k resolution..
One of the greatest Animes Ever Made! Hugely underrated!
Definitely... i cant ever forget it.
So sad other animes with less quality and generic story is in the top
Putting the scene of them meeting each other for the first time at the very end is genious. Such a bittersweet ending. Makes you feel like the story is finished but somehow is yet to be said.
How fitting the mood is nostalgia I remember being 16 watching this on a smartphone and shedding a tear 🥲
I was 18, miss those days
That was the most powerfully ending ever....i still cry when I watch it ...
man, the voice actors, they really know how to put emotion in this.
who put these damn onions here
I always come back to this time to time, this ending is so memorable.
I miss bunji kugashira
parallax YHH right D: why did he have to go he was one of the coolest character...
If I recall, he was one of Harry's best hired guns and was to go after Brandon. I can't remember if he worked with Brandon before, but I'm sure he was a badass who died with a cat or dog by his side.
He went from being a cool badass to fucking soulless child murderer with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I’m upset that Brandon didn’t piss on his corpse. Pathetic.
Pshh, Gungrave G.O.R.E.
@@Arkonu This is what I was thinking lol whenever they made it seem kinda sad he died, all I could think of is that scene where he goes in the room and kills that family. After that nothing could redeem his character to me
What a bloody masterpiece.
That poor little girl had everything taken away from her :/
It’s a real wonder that almost all videogames adaptation suck but somehow this one time they managed to create a masterpiece from a mediocre videogame.
This scene gives such a smart and insightful hint on harry’s entire personality...
it wasnt a mediocre videogame, if you play the game and the entire concept is a masterpiece. ITs just that for the time, its already outdated.
@@frozzytango9927 ok, maybe. I didn’t play it, merely citing what I read about it.
Seeing all of their dead friends again is so powerful.
Hits so hard
Every time I have the opportunity, I tell people about this Anime. I really want more people to know of this masterpiece!! It’s so freaking beautiful! I was a senior in high school when this came out. Now 35 and still brings me to tears.
Japanese anime at its best ...its been a long time but I remember every scene.
One of the greatest animes to ever come to us. Glad I played the video game first. The game was awesome, but the show's better.
“Let’s go home” 😭
GunGrave... So beautiful I wish shows were more like this with a sense
One of the best ending I've ever seen so far.
I was always torn with this anime. While it has a special place on my anime list, I loved the flash backs waaaaaayyyyyyy more than the present day stuff of zombie Brandon Heat. I felt like thats where the heart and strength of the series was at. It's a damn shame a lot anime heads really havent seen or ever mention this show though.
Cause the zombie Brandon stuff is basically an adaptation of the game which is completely different from the show
It was to match up with the games where he does look like an undead creature. It was a nice tie in to respecting the game.
I hope heaven is real in GunGrave. If only it could get confirmed (;-;)
It is
one of the best endings to anything
Fantastic series shame they never continued the series or reboot it😊
Bruh, loved this when I watched it many years ago.
That ending makes me cry. Reminds me of my brother. Despite there battles against each other... they still have love for each other.
Is that Spike Spiegel?🙂 7:21
