Mentally and psychologically, this was a very uplifting victory for Viren. He defeated for example Puttemans and Bedford, who would compete against him in the Munich Summer Olympics 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter finals just three and four weeks later. By beating them already in Stockholm, Viren showed that he was in top shape, and capable of both enduring a fast early pace, and a strong and accelerating final kick.

Great race. World record at 2 miles, I think. Thanks for putting it up.

Astonishing 600 m sprint by Viren, who still had the capacity to kick in another gear in the last strait. Maybe his best race, although in tough competition. (The four olympic victories.) The time was 8:14.0, new world record. The crowd is shouting "Anders, Anders", cheering for Gärderud who came in third, and went on the beat the steeplechase world record later this autumn.

I've waited for this video to come out since 1972. Back story.
Viren wasn't known yet in most of the world. This race was in his native land of Finland.
It was his last race before the Olympics.
His goal was to go all out.
    The distance was 2 miles.
In the race was Emil Puttemans of Belgium, and Ian Stewart of Great Britain.
    With 2 laps to go, VIren throws in a 59.5, then runs a 55.2 (1:54.7 last 800)
to finish in a NEW WORLD RECORD OF 8:14.0
This race was ahead of its time.
In his book that I bought in 1973, he talked of the workout he did before this race.
20x200 avg 27.8 with 30 sec rest. Last one in 25.8. THANK YOU FOR POSTING.
