    I have an interesting question for you, and I’m hoping you can shed some light on this. Here in the United States the volume of sacred law we find on our altar is the holy Bible unless otherwise requested. If a brother believes in God, but does not identify with organized religion, is his obligation still valid if the Bible is the closest to his belief system? Even though he doesn’t necessarily believe all of its words?

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  6 лет назад +1

      For me, personally, the answer is yes. However, due to our multiple jurisdictional issues, I would suggest reaching out to an authority in your state to get a clear for-sure answer.

      The Rockstar Farmer we are very religious tolerant. I agree with what is a mason. If it’s close then yes. We still encourage him to have faith with god

    • @lancecarter100
      @lancecarter100 5 лет назад

      Good question. What do you mean with the term "obligation"?
      You dont have to believe all of its words. The bible is not necessarily just for the believers of the word. Its actually more for the non believers.
      What a person gets out of the bible really reflects on how a person approaches the bible.
      It is not a quick read.
      It is a life time study.
      Masonry does not require that you read or know the bible. It only presents it, as well as other holy books, that you might open the pages and find peace or improve your life in some way.
      Masonry does not require that you read the bible, but it hopes that you do.
      For in it is a great message to the one that can see.

    A little late to the party on this one but here is my question and a little bit of context.
    I have known a mason through family connections for 6-7 years. I told him that I want to petition to join his lodge and I have begun going to his lodge whenever I can to get to know the other masons there. Now the petition requires that I have two masons vouch for my character and if I’m not mistaken they must each have known me for at least 1 year.
    Do I have to continue going to the lodge I wish to join for 1 year as a visitor before someone can sign my petition?

    Why so secretive!?
    My grandpa was a mason when i was little - remember asking my grandma what they do. She said just a bunch of guys that meet together and help the community.
    Also had a cousin that was a pastor and a mason. Asked him why he joined. He replied he kind of regretted it and did it to help his chances of getting a quality job. At the very least there's some suspicious rituals--
    So ultimately why all the secrets?

    i read up on the history of the elks lodge and they took alot from the masons but i want to know do they do similar rituals and do they only get specific information at every stage their in, and not be able to have or know about the levels above them like the masons ? and do they have the same core beliefs? i really would appreciate it if you can answer me back. thank you for your time and information.

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  6 лет назад

      Thank you for the compliment, but I am going to have to let you down about the Elks. I just don't know. They used to have a lodge in the town I work in, but it shut down some years ago. According to their website, the closest one is over an hour away. And, the only way I know to answer your question is to ask an Elk.
      My understanding is that the Elks, and hundreds of others of Fraternal organizations, cropped up after various anti-masonic movements. Men wanted to join something, so when one was condemned, another popped up. The general outline and structure of those new organizations followed after what the men had experience with, naturally.
      Sorry I couldn't help more! If I ever meet an Elk, I'll ask 'em!

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  6 лет назад +2

      Here in MS new Master Masons are generally issued, or can purchase, a Blue Lodge Text Book, which has some, but not all, of the ritual work written down. What is written down in there is what I share on these videos, which is how I know I stay in line with the laws of my jurisdiction.
      Some states have ciphers, which include ALL of the work, but are in code.
      IMO, the best way to learn is still by mouth and repetition.

    On the subject of recognising Freemasons by rings lapel badges etc. I am not a Freemason but I wear a lapel badge of the compass and square with the letter G in the centre as it is also an emblem in the Royal Black Institution which is a Protestant Fraternal Order based mainly in Northern Ireland where I live but have some" Preceptories" in other countries including USA and Canada. To be in the Black Institution you have to first be an Orangeman and then a Royal Arch Purple man . One time I attended a charity barbecue at a local Masonic Hall where I got into a conversation with a Freemason who was a Provincial Grand Master (I think). When I said that I had visited the Irish Grand Lodge Hall and museum in Dublin he asked me what Masonic Lodge I was in. When I told him that I wasn't a Freemason and that I just had an interest in Fraternal Orders he looked surprised and mentioned that he had noticed my "2 1/2 "ring which is actually an emblem of the Royal Arch Purple Degree. I lecture (confer degrees) in all these Protestant Fraternal Orders. Also as I'm not a Freemason I do not know if the number 2 1/2 is used in Freemasonry AND the Royal Arch Purple in the same way the Compass And Square With The Letter G in the centre is used in Freemasonry AND the Royal Black Institution.

      If you simply haven't been showing up, but have been paying dues, then just show up! If the issue is not paying dues, then here in Mississippi you would have to pay this years current dues and, if it has been more than 3 years since your last "dues paying" year, you would have to be investigated by a committee before the ballot is taken to re-activate you. My understanding is that this is an old hold-over from 200 years ago where someone might have missed lodge because they were imprisoned, but nobody knew they were. Whatever the case, those are the solutions.

One question I have is do you have any good suggestions or techniques you've used to help with posting? I've been reading up on some memorization techniques and it's been helpful so far. Another thing I've heard is that Prince Hall masons are sometimes recognized and sometimes not by the various states grand lodges. Why is that? I'd also love to know what sort of books you would recommend for an EA to read? I've read Freemasonry for Dummies and found it very enlightening.

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  6 лет назад +4

      Matthew, I am not sure why I did not see your comment before. My apologies for the late reply.
      1) I don't have any good tips for the memory work. I am one of those annoying people where it just "comes to me". I am by far not the best, but I do not struggle with it either.
      2) For PHA vs Non-PHA, see this video: ruclips.net/video/7Z0h_XIxJbU/видео.html
      3) I am not well read enough to pin down a specific list of books. Maybe a book is not even the best option for a new EA. Maybe getting past-issue copies of MSA Short-Talk Bulletins, or past Scottish Rite Journals, or Knights Templar Magazines, or The Journal of the Masonic Society, or The Journal of Masonic Research & Letters. I am sure I am missing some. Point being, making short articles are more digestible for an EA, rather than a full-sized book. That said, when pressured for a book list I normally just send people here: scottishrite.org/members/masonic-education/suggested-reading/

      Brooklyn Sarcozi..;.. Masons are the custodian's of humanitys real history, its been coded into the texts using gema-tri-an ciphers...
      the original language was spoken as number.. by a type 2 civilisation that lived throughout this solar system aprox' 3.2 million plus years ago
      the 7 fold cipher is best used... ie
      mason = 11621 = 11 = 2 = 22
      seven = 65551 = 22
      22 -:- 7 = 3.142
      G is the 7''th letter...
      Mars is the key...

      Prince Hall Masons get all and the same as any other Mason. I was raised in a Prince Hall Lodge - Fred Douglass Lodge #99 F.& A.M. and later applied and received duel membership in a A.F.& A.M. Lodge - Albert Pike Lodge # 303. Both in Kansas. There is no difference between the two, if someone say there is, they are confused and need to review their obligation... Unfortunately there are still some States that do not recognize Prince Hall lodges, their loss, we can only admonish these Brothers to study harder and look to the East for more light.

    My family never said anything about the Freemason. I am putting my pennies in the jar. Cleaning myself up. My house and getting ready. My parents know everyone in their town. I know someone there and asked my mom if she could tell him who I am. He knew me as a child. I told my mom that I need a petition. She started crying. We never spoke of masonry. It's just a little strange how proud she was when I told her that I want to be a Freemason. He was gone. Still need a petition. No hurry. Found out her grandfather was a a mason. There's more. Hi brother Jared! Thank you for your channel. I'm from Brazil and I'm already a master mason. I was initiated in 2019 in a Lodge from the state of Bahia northeast of my country. My Lodge practices the Ancient and Accpeted Scottish Rite. But the thing is that the modes of recognition I know is in portuguese. The other day I was looking for a language partner from the U.S. in one of those video chat apps so I can better my spoken English and somebody saw my square and compass tattoo. This guy started asking me some questions that I knew it was he trying to identify me as a brother, but I'm not sure if I answered him in the way he would know I was his brother. I wish you could assist me on how to identify myself as a freemason in English. In my own Lodge it woudn´t be possible because they don't speak English as a second language. I'm not sure about the skull part. I have heard from some that it reminds us all of our mortality but I'm not 100% on that. I can answer the question about the rituals. After I was raised and became a Master Mason I realized at that point is when the journey of learning begins. But I have heard the saying so many times and finally realized how true it is. You get out of Freemasonry what you put into it. If you seek out to understand what the rituals represent and/or mean then you grow as a Mason and get so much out of it but if you don't seek out to understand or to learn and just attend Lodge then it won't be as exciting and you won't get as much out of it.

    • @holdenmontgomery
      @holdenmontgomery 6 лет назад +1

      For the dues card that Jared talked about the dues for each Lodge can be different from one Lodge to another so it really depends. Also I know for the state that I live in there is an initiation fee that must be paid. It all goes towards making sure the Lodge keeps the lights on and the Grand Lodge of the state you live in keeps their lights on. But to me personally it's more of an investment then dues that you have to pay. Plus for me personally the biggest benefit that I get out of Freemasonry is the brotherly community that we have.

    I have run into people who were wearing masonic symbols or while I was wearing masonic symbols (shirt, hat, ring) and invariably we will just have a quick "Hello Brother" moment. No "trying" needed as no deep masonic conversation took place, simple a hello and a back and forth about what Lodge we belong to.
    Here in PA part of the Mentorship program is to teach newly made MMs what they need to know to visit other lodges. We are also required to emulate the process in lodge once a year.

      It all depends on where in PA you are. Your best bet is to go to the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania website: pagrandlodge.org/ In the upper right corner of the Home Page, click on the "Lodge Finder." Put in your zip code and a list of Lodges near you will be listed. It will show if they have a website and provide a link. I suggest you check out several near you, contact the Secretary and tell him you are interested in the Fraternity. The Secretaries will take it from there. Make sure you fit in with the Brothers as the dynamics of Lodges do differ and you may feel more comfortable in one than another. You might also want to check out the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania's website www.princehall-pa.org/ and do the same. Their listing of lodges is under the tab "Organizational / Affiliations Links, click on that then "Subordinate Lodges." Without knowing you personally or where in PA you reside that is the best I can help at this time. Also, keep in mind there is a time of residence requirement, so if you just arrived in PA you may have to wait until your petition can be accepted. Please accept my good wishes for a successful journey.

    Hey brother, I am a fellow brother who started my journey at the Stellenbosch Lodge 2646 in South Africa. My question pertains to my journey. I started as an entered apprentice of which I was well excited for. However a short while after my initiation, I was offered my dream job. This was 4 years ago. I have desired to carry on with my degrees however I do not get the time as I have to travel for work and where I live now (Girona-Spain) there are no English lodges. My question is how can I work on my craft without being part of a lodge due to my convocation?

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  5 лет назад

      Brother, first off, congratulations on the job - few people get to say they were able to attain their dream job. That's wonderful!
      As for the education side of things - of course you'll be highly limited for, primary, two reasons: 1) Different jurisdictions are just a little different, one from another, so even if you could attend a lodge in Spain, and speak the language, it likely wouldn't match up 100% to what you learned in South Africa, and, 2) Because some things likely aren't written down anyway. I say likely because there are some jurisdictions that publish, to their members, a full cipher of the ritual - every single word is there, but in some form of a code.
      There are, of course, my videos, numerous books, podcasts, and the like, but will they teach you want South Africa expects you to know? Doubtful.
      The only other option that comes to mind would require you to find a lodge you can speak the language in. Here in MS we can request for another lodge in another jurisdiction to do "courtesy work" - that is where you would keep working on and receive your Degrees in Spain, but your membership resides in South Africa. Generally in this situation the lodge helping out (the Spain Lodge) would keep your degree fees, etc, as "compensation" for doing the work, but your annual dues would still be paid to South Africa.
      Does any of that help?

      @@WhatisaMason , W-Brother thank you for your timely reply. I have, between our communications, reached out to my W-Brothers is South Africa and they have advised me on how to proceed. Interesting that you feel this applies to Freemasonry, and how scripture can be so manipulated. After all, while I don't recall any scriptures speaking to if Christ ever winked, he certainly spoke with his feet, in that he traveled all around to preach The Word, and taught with his fingers by performing many miracles that involved touching. Freemasons certainly do not sow discord, or engage in mischief nor are difficult to deal with.
      Interesting that you didn't quote this verse from that chapter:
      23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
      That is the essence of what Freemasonry teaches. Follow the commandments and the law, correct Brethren who are not.

      What is a Mason He probably picked Proverbs6vs12-15 because it related more to the five points of fellowship that deals with passing a secret name or chant from mouth to ear which is a ancient magical practice. No real Christian(which means Christ like) would ever take part of Masonry, but many go into it shutting their eyes to ignore the truth because of their massive appetite for deception. Question, What is the stone that the builders rejected.😊

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  6 лет назад

      Superficially, it refers to three scriptures: Luke 20:17, Matthew 21:42 and Mark 12:10. Those scriptures, in their own right, are parables, if you will, "hiding" a deeper meaning. In Freemasonry they also have a deeper meaning, but it depends which degree you apply it to and how "esoteric" you want to get, as to what the stone really is. I, personally, would say that the "stone" refers to an individual character trait.
      The scriptures are used in the Mark Master Degree, which really should go between the FC and MM degrees, but in practice is a part of the York Rite here in the USA, and is the first degree conferred in that system.

For example, here in MS, living in MS for 6 months is enough for you to "establish residency", and become a Freemason in Mississippi.

    I have a few questions after watching this:
    I am a FC in the United Kingdom. My lodge does not require submission of a proficiency to pass to the next degree. To me perfection was key and I enjoyed doing my part word for word (I understood that it was the link to the Brethren who came before us so it was important to get it right and not change it), so when I heard about the proficiencies I really liked the idea. My only issue is that I can’t ask you for one as: 1. You don’t know if I’m actually an FM
    2. You wouldn’t be able to give me the answers
    In consideration of the above, what books can I read that my lodge library might have that will give me the same knowledge? Are there any good lay books that do a decent job?

      @@lazarus6125 yes, there are several and some lodges work their own. Two of the most common are Emulation and Universal. If you have a dark blue degree book, it will say on the title page or intro which version it is. If you don't have a book, just ask your sponsor or lodge mentor.
      Some old lodges (mine dates from 1755 - Newstead Lodge No. 47 in Nottingham) will have aspects of their own ritual which are not worked anywhere else. It is these quirks that William Preston tried to capture as he realised that, at the Union, these odd bits of ritual would be lost - these then formed the basis of the Book of Lectures.

      A "Master Mason" and "Master" designate 2 different things. A Master Mason is a degree you receive which is the culmination of the Blue Lodge. A Master or Past Master is the office that is served for a 1 year term as being the "leader" of the particular Blue Lodge the person belongs to.
      The 32nd Degree is the last degree in the Scottish Right. This is an "appendant body" of Masonry which means you must be a "Master Mason" before you can join. The same holds true of the York Rite and Shrine.
      Hopefully this helps.

    The following is the deceptive process of the higher levels of freemasonry; above 33 degree level: (Proverbs 6:16-19) "¶ These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: {17} A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, {18} An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, {19} A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren."

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  6 лет назад +3

      Yet again we start out with a false assumption. There are no degrees "above" the 33rd. First, the "highest" degree is that of Master Mason - the 3rd Degree. The Scottish Rite, which has the degrees that culminate at the honorary 33rd degree, is an appendant body - it is to the side, not above, a Master Mason. Either way, no other Freemasonic organization uses any number above 33.
      As it happens, Freemasonry despises all of those things as well. We "meet on the level", because we aren't proud about our stations or accomplishments, we are equal. TRUTH is a principal tenant of Freemasonry. We specifically teach to not shed blood and to protect the innocent. One primary purpose of a brotherhood is to NOT sow discord. I cannot fathom how you feel this has anything to do with Freemasonry. And, as I cited in your other comment, you cut short of a vital scripture in this chapter:
      23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
      That is the essence of what Freemasonry teaches. Follow the commandments and the law, correct Brethren who are not.

      @WhatisaMason  6 лет назад +12

      Thank you for your candor. It is serious. But lets be fair, how many people in Church have you seen with a Cross pin or ring? Membership isn't secret at all - after all, here I am, and I am one of many men with a RUclips Channel, Podcast, Website, etc. Our lodges are online, including pictures and names of our leaders.
      There is no spiritual salvation in Freemasonry. We specifically tell Men that that is what Church is for, and not to try to find any such thing in Freemasonry, because it is not there. We even tell them to ensure that they keep attending Church. The purposes are many. Yes, brotherhood is a part of it, but so is the sharing of ideas, up to and including no less than the hopeful expectation of the freeing of all mankind - freedom of religion, of thought, of government. Not to overthrow any of that, mind you, but we are all aware that there have been tyrannical governments and faiths in the past. We want to ensure the whole of humanity is well educated and able to establish fair government, can route out tyrannical faith leaders, etc.
      All that said, the fact is that in most cases it is a treated as a club. The high minded ideals of enlightenment have fallen aside to being a social order. However, there is some believe that it is changing. Time shall tell.
