  • Mahalo ukuleles are often seen as typically low end cheapo instruments, with a variety of quality control issues, such as high action, bad intonation, awful stock strings, questionable build quality etc etc etc.
However, I have a soft spot for these ukes, and I own these two Mahalo Kahiko sopranos, as well as a Mahalo Java tenor. The sound and playability can be decent enough, but tweaking is often required to get the instruments in shape. In my opinion, the Mahalos have a certain inexplicable charm, and I love the lack of pretension these ukes represent. The Kahiko line is made from sengon, a tonewood I know nothing about. They are extremely lightweight, and very traditional looking. I really like them, and I guess I was lucky, because both the ukes in the video were pretty nice straight out of the box.

Yes, these ukes are far better than their somewhat shady reputations.

@@drbekken I"ve never actually seen one in person, but haven't heard many good things about them. Those two really sound good and it sounds like the intonation is right on.

Have you seen the Mahalo SlimLine series? Thankyou for showing a low cost ukulele and demonstrating that you do not need to spend a lot to find a playable ukulele in 2024.
