- Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has spoken to Al Jazeera on the sidelines of the Al Jazeera Forum in Doha, warning against any foreign military presence on Somali territory.
In an interview with Al Jazeera’s Osama bin Javaid, the president linked the war in Gaza and wider regional tensions to what he described as a global shift away from multilateralism.

Respectfully, some important legal and historical facts are being left out of this discussion.
First, the 1960 union was not a temporary or conditional arrangement like Egypt-Syria. It created a single sovereign state, the Somali Republic, with one constitution, one international legal personality, and one UN seat. There was no clause allowing any region to later withdraw unilaterally.
Second, British Somaliland’s recognition in June 1960 ended the moment it voluntarily united with Italian Somaliland. Since then, no country has recognized Somaliland as a sovereign state. The UN, African Union, Arab League, and OIC all consistently recognize Somalia’s territorial integrity. Past recognition does not automatically revive decades later.
Third, the idea of “reinstating independence” has no basis in international law. International law recognizes decolonization, not the secession of a region from an already independent UN-member state. Under the principle of uti possidetis juris, Somalia’s borders are those inherited at independence-and Somaliland falls within them.
Fourth, Somalia’s state collapse in 1991 did not dissolve the country. State failure is not the same as state death. Afghanistan, Liberia, and Sierra Leone all collapsed and recovered without losing statehood. Somalia retained UN membership, treaties, and legal continuity. No region can legally dissolve a state on its own.
Fifth, yes, the Act of Union had flaws. But flawed founding documents are normally corrected through constitutional reform, not separation. Somalia has since adopted new constitutions, including a federal system, specifically to address past injustices. You fix a house-you don’t demolish it because the foundation was imperfect.
Sixth, Somali unity is also a moral and religious matter. We are one people, one language, one religion, with a shared history. Islam strongly discourages division when reconciliation is possible:
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.” (Qur’an 3:103)
Seventh, today’s Somalia is no longer a centralized dictatorship. It is a federal republic that allows regional autonomy and local governance. Unity no longer means domination from Mogadishu.
Finally, separation weakens Somalis as a whole. Fragmentation invites foreign interference, weakens bargaining power, and keeps the Horn unstable. A united Somalia is stronger economically, diplomatically, and strategically.
Conclusion:
Political grievances are real, and they must be addressed seriously. But the solution is reform, justice, and power-sharing within one country, not permanent division.
Somalia is one nation under Allah. Unity is not a mistake-it is a responsibility.

Actually Somaliland was acountry in 1960 who volunteered to unite with Somalia thinking they will make an empire for all somali speaking nations starting from Djabouti to NFD state in Kenya.
