No idea about the gearbox longevity myself, but honestly I've never had a stock gearbox fail on me unless the internals and the rifle have been modified. Snow Wolf Thompsons tend to be pretty solid from what I've seen and read.
Honestly It never bothered me but I've heard alot of people are not a fan of it. I've heard a few people have relocated it but it wasn't something I looked into, in theory from the ammount of wire from the ammo counter pannel to the battery you can see in the disassembley/assembley videos I can see why you couldn't move the battery into the grenade launcher cage. I've linked alot of threads and forums on the Pulse rifle in the video description, maybe one of them will lead to to someone who has move the 9v battery. Hope this helps.

Any way to relocate the 9V battery to a different spot? The fact that its in the magwell is lame.
