In spring, it is the dawn. The slowly paling edge of the hills is touched with red, and wisps of purple cloud trail in the sky.
In summer, the night. Moonlit nights, of course, and the dark of night, too, when many fireflies flit about it is also delightful when one or two glow softly, and rain on a summer night is lovely.
In autumn, the evening. As the blazing sun sinks close to the edge of the hills, crows fly home to their nest in threes and fours or twos and threes, moving sight. More charming still is a file of wind geese, specks in the distant sky. When the sun has set, there is something inexpressible in the sound of the wind and the singing of insects.
In winter, the early morning. If snow has fallen, it is beautiful, but white frost is lovely, and it is pleasant even when there is no snow of frost but it is simply very cold and people bury around stirring up fire and bringing charcoal. But as the day draws on and the air warms up, the fire in the brazier fires down to white ash, most unpleasant.

Sei Shonagon is the daughter of Kiyohara no Motosuke and is believed to have been named Nagiko in recent studies. Kiyohara no Motosuke is also a well-known poet whose poetry has been chosen by Hyakunin Isshu.

If you can find it, read "Seeds of the Heart." It analyses Japanese literature from the beginning through the 1950s.

Thank You for this episode. I was really powerful. As an African American I would love to see films that help in understanding between Black and Asian people. In some US cities our two communities have a long history. It would be great to see some of those positive stories told.

Thanks a lot for this concise and clear-cut story about the Heian female Literature. It's quite helpful even for a Japanese like me. (I confess with regret that I do not know the full story of the Tale of Genji.) Will try to find out if any newer films from you are also available on YT.

Sei Shounagon is now so popular because shes in Fate GO, as a history fan i love inventions like fate that make fictional characters based on real ones however they made Sei Shonagon into a party girl, she looks like the type of person who would be a famous tik tocker but she looks cute as well. However i wouldnt say it ruins the experience because just like everything we dont know much about Sei and that is known allot in history.

2:24 kanbun (漢文) actually is classic written chinese, wich could be read in chinese (ondoku) or in japanese doing an immediate translation (kundoku), what you're referring to here is man' yogana wich used chinese characters to write japanese language using them for their sound and not for their meaning. Also you should mention how kana evolved from a simpler version of the man' yogana characters.

@@kristiekalita347 From my perspective, I can't help but have thought Genji was a deeply troubled noble who seemed to be unable to find peace, from the perspective of the anime. It's a special kind of sad I feel from it, from what I felt watching it. The way Genji so freely shares such profound and deep things with all the women he laid with. Not to mention the fact he managed to influence one to kill another! It's rly good, ya :)

@@azagur-sag988 same dude! Our thoughts are really similar I see..It was always like everyone he did right did him wrong at the last...also to mention that every woman he loved and was precious to him left his side at the end. It was that nobody liked him for his soul but only for his looks. So he always kept searching for some other lady to replace the memory of his mother....so it's pretty cool and sad. Also you should check out the real life movie on it from 2001 if you haven't yet...."Sennen no Koi Genji"
