I've seen a lot of situations of down confusion in high school football where people think a personal foul on the defense or pass interference on the defense is an automatic first down. But I wouldn't think anyone would believe that encroachment on the defense is an automatic first down.
I was listening to a high school football game and this happened. The team leading the game had the ball and were on the 50 yard line with a minute or so time left. The losing team had no time outs. The leading team took the snap and the QB ran backwards several yards and downed the ball. He did this several times and on the last down he ran backwards again and there were a few seconds left in the game. None of the coaches realized what was happening and the QB ran backwards too far. By that time the losing team took the ball and kicked a field goal and won the game.
( FULL DISCLOSURE; I am a high school official with over 40 years of on field experience.) A few issues here. 1) It can NOT be 4th and 2 to go from the 2. It would be 4th and goal. If it is goal to go, the Line to gain marker would not be up. It would be lying down and only the Down Box would be standing. 2) The penalty would have been half the distance, which COULD have passed the line to gain. The offensive coach should have requested a measurement following the placement of the ball. 3) once the "4th" down play was ran, a measurement SHOULD have been made by the crew. It sure looked like the runner passed the line to gain, based on the spot the next series started. BAD MISTAKE by the crew for NOT being more aware of the situation.
The chain markers are already laying on the ground near the 10 before the penalty on 4th down. You can see them in the video. I think likely everyone on the field knew it was 4th down except maybe the down box guy. You can tell by how the qb reaches the ball recklessly out. He wouldnt have done that if he thought it was 1st down. I think the complaints were all focused on whether it was a td or not, not on the down. Which i think they have a strong argument on the td, but it is hard to tell with any certainty without a view down the goalline.
Looked like Male scored on the reach and the recovery...tough calls for the ref for sure. But I think they would've run a different play if they knew it was 4th down...not 1st down as the refs told them and the chain gang
The voice over person may be speculating re: his comment that the down box person was told to put 1st down on the indicator. The official down is kept by the crew on the field, not necessarily what shows on the box. I'm fairly certain that the crew knew what down was.
I mean at all levels of football there should be meetings between referees and coaches where they get to air out their grievances both ways and there should be a third party there to mediate.
I was one of the players on that field for ballard and coaxh wanted to do a qb sneak to the clock to run and besides male had two more time outs left and he did nor want to give them back the ball
I sure feel bad for male h.s. Their coach can choke more championship games. His young men do not get out played, they get out coached. One championship out of five try’s . That should be unacceptable at a school like Male H.S.
Cheating referees everywhere these days from high school all the way to the pros, this game goes to show refs couldn't cheat this team out of this victory.
ridiculous comment...yeah I am sure the officials here benefitted financially from the outcome they clearly deliberately engineered. That's how high school sports work, the officials are out to "cheat" teams. right?
That is "a thing" with High School football: ANYTHING can happen!
That's the Vikings Bills game a couple of weeks ago
Talk about an elevator of emotions. That was crazy
Ball don't lie........should've been a TD on the original play that they got screwed on
Yep, the correct team won.
Seriously the craziest game I’ve ever seen
I was standing on the goal line 15 feet from the play - and he CLEARLY reached over the line for a score. High School refs get worse every year.
Maple Grove HS scored 19 points in 1 Min. w 2 offside kicks to end the game and win.

Well, that's what the stick said, so why not believe it?
@@ukjoe42 The coaches should know better than to believe it. It would expect a coach AT MINIMUM to yell for the Linesman to check the down.

The similarities between this and Bills Vikings are uncanny

Mr. Nelson, thank you for your insight and explanation and for 40 years of field experience/service!
-Respectfully
Greatest example of ball dont lie. But Male did get messed over in the championship
Wow!!

Crazy ending for sure, but not THE CRAZIEST. Check out Plano East and John Tyler here in Texas.
Wow , just checked it out. I had forgotten all about it. Thank you for a great memory.
Yea that one is unreal. If it were a movie, I would not believe it.
Check out .. Tyler John Tyler high school out of Texas crazy game.. I dont know who they played but was crazy As hell..
The referees needed to get on the ball when it comes to knowing which is first down.

Damn 🫣
Officials should be held accountable. Game shouldn't end that way
"Accountable"? The correct team won the game since it was a reachover touchdown before ball as knocked loose.
You need to understand the rules. Male won the game because they actually deserved the win.
Ampipe v. Walnut Heights
Brutal way to lose
Thats what i said take the dam safety same thing bills should have did imo

The Male Bulldogs won, sorry, you crybabies.
