Is there anythign that is not simply superlative, nearly flawless by Spyres? The timbre, the vocal production, the range, the musicality, the diction, the expressive phrasing, the vibrancy of the tone, the coloratura and trills, the control of dynamics, the knowledge of the musical style, the uniformly rock-solid development of his low notes as well as his highest notes. He's got everything, in many ways he reminds me the legendary Gedda. People should be more aware that we're living amidst one of the best tenors in many, many decades.
It is very difficult to find contemporary artists in the male repertoire that could have been stars in any age. I dare say that Michael Spyres is one such artist. Brilliant, brilliant performance!
A truly outstanding performance: nuanced, musically and theatrically very accomplished, versatile, comical, great pronunciation of French, thoroughly entertaining!
Beautifully sung. Playful, expressive throughout the range and trills sung were (here it comes) AMAZING! I don’t think I’ve heard such accomplished trills from a tenor before. Also, remarkable good and strong, sustained low notes from a high voice. I do not speak French fluently but his is excellent also. Bravo!!
@XDranzer000 his voice is truly ridiculous. The video of him singing largo del factotum has him showing off a truest baritonal mid range and even has him singing a quiet but still audible low C during the “Fígaro!” bits. I think he is ultimately some kind of freak tenor rather than a baritone because he is far to full and comfortable on his highs to be a baritone.
Historical singers such as Josef Schmidt and Hermann Jadlowker have recorded spectacular trills. Schmidt's recording of this aria in a live broadcast has wonderful ones.
So glad to hear Mr. Spyres in the soft French repertoire : he is such at home and currently matchless in this latter. I haven't heard such a good Postillon since Luca Canonici, but if Mr. Spyres' high D is not as powerful as Luca Canonici's, his French is so much better, just perfect.
I love how so many music experts show up in this comment section to undermine him. Come on guys, stop being dickheads and just admit that he has an amazing control of his voice, wether he is a natural tenor or not.

Lohengrin and Ballo in Maschera may be coming soon. He's in his mid-40s, after all. That being said, why sing what others can, I'd rather hear him sing classical and romantic era music.
The whole span of Verdi's career is within the Romantic era, although not as early as the likes of Donizetti. I'm interested to hear his low notes in his tenor roles because he started as a baritone and can still sing like one.
Barone Vitellio Scarpia Thank you Barone for bringing some reality about how operatic voices should sound into the mindless adulation this no doubt fine fellow receives on RUclips. If one had time it would be interesting to show how in just a few bars he can display several and sometimes opposing technical faults.
@@chesterinthefield Spyres will remain a baritone until he proves can sing at least B4 in chest dominated coordination. He still has about an octave and a half to go.
Yes, this is the kind of repertoire that he has to cling on to and leave that sheer lunacy of thinking that he´s a BARITENOR, and ever worse, sing baritone repertoire. Same as in LES HUGUENOTS or GUILLAUME TELL he has a brilliant and secure canopy of high notes, in this case blasting Chapelou´s wonderful D natural at the end of this splendid aria/raconto. I hope that he makes some sense, some logic and that the steers clear from all the other nonse of which I´ve just spoken. It would be good for him and for the audiences. Let logic and reason prime!!!!
No one can touch Helge Rosvaenge in this! Not even Gedda who is much better than young baritone Spyres here. Michael develop your baritone voice, use chest voice, quit the fake tenor stuff and become great dude! You are a rare talent these days! Make use of it!

Now wait a minute, you just might be on to something here, the difference between 4:39 & 4:44 was HUGE...I'm inclined to believe you, some chest inclusion could turn him into a phenom. Question is, can he ACTUALLY do it? Especially bearing in mind that he's really a baritone.
Quel grand artiste !

I agree with you. No tenor can do those trills like Spyres today. We had Blake in the good old days.
Listen to him singing Figaro in the act 1 duet from Barbiere with Larry Brownlee (Almaviva). Spyres still has the baritone bones!

Superbe! Merci.
Some of the best singing I’ve ever heard. Definitely one of my favourite interpretations of the aria - right up there with Gedda.
below Gedda who could sing naturally, perfect elocution, and as if it was just easy not to mention, French tenors no one remembers...
Sorprende sempre! ❤️
Diction pafaite tellement rare !Sublime!
I was listening to those B's knowing he probably had a high C in him, but that spot-on D5 at the end was such a surprise. Bravo
There's even a top D.
Que deleite es escuchar a este maestro. Que buen gusto y que fraseo !!
Admirable !

Wow.
Better is not possible.
I've never heard a man trill that well - and it's not even close!
Give a listen to Pol Plançon and Hermann Jadlowker. Both had exemplary trills.
comsi comsa Gedda - super
This is nice but if you here the piece sang by Nicolai Gedda this sounds very flat !
ok.
However the excellent performance, I prefer Schmidt and Gedda.
Hm, I'd like to hear him sing a Verdi spinto (or even dramatic) tenor role. I'm curious to hear his solid low notes while singing as a tenor.
